  1. I've had the stove on for maybe 6-8wks here; every night and most days and absolutely love it. Central heating has never been on; boiler only on for the hot water (Combi) so costing almost nothing. * I'm getting through the wood/peat though 🙄 I'm looking for an inline fan system to divert some of the heat from the kitchen to the front of the house; lounge. Which often has its door closed, so doesn't benefit from the warm air moving through.
  2. Yup. I said this pages ago The system is nice, but has (or certainly looks like) it's been installed by a numptie. Call the installer for an explanation AND REFUND. Get a second opinion from a certified installer. Call your insurance because this might all need re-doing + fixing what he messed-up.
  3. Oh if that goop catches fire, putting out fumes, or starts running down the wall cavity into other things .... then 'a warm bed' might not be the only thing heating up 😱
  4. If it was a proper installation and you have a certificate, then you should be fine. Don't be shy about calling your insurance though. I certainly wouldn't like that botch in my house. It would clash with all my other botches 😂
  5. Looks like someone is in for detention 'if' they did use this to fill the gap.
  6. Some are flammable, some produce toxic fumes.
  7. Yes I doubt they'd use silicone too. But hell ... you never do know. The first "big drip" pic really looks like a whole load of silicone has been used to fill a gap. The whole lot is heating/melting and pouring out through the lowest point. Yes. I agree. Get in contact with the installer and don't use it till it's been looked at. Might also be worth having a different installers details to hand. As if it is that ... i wouldn't let them touch it till a professional had seen it. Lovely looking system though
  8. Are you sure the guy that fitted your system didn't use black silicone to seal around the outside of the pipe/wall gap. Said silicone is now melting with the heat of the fire and dripping all over the shop? Even if it was residue accumulating inside your flue, it wouldn't look like that and certainly wouldn't be of that amount after a few uses.
  9. No traffic wardens up here. So we don't have that issue either 😁👍
  10. I second this. Had a Lenovo for a number of years and very reliable, easy to self upgrade and will certainly be my lappy of choice when the time comes again 👍
  11. Heck ... up here we'd just put down a small wooden ramp against the existing kerb and drive over the f***er. End of 😉👍
  12. Could you just be unlucky and have both a dodgy stat and fan?
  13. Wet, windy (gusty), cold bite to the wind but bright 🙄
  14. If you're really struggling to get things going. Try lighting with a simple butane blowtorch. A quick and easy solution. You can pick them up (the trigger) online cheaply and the canisters can be bought in most shops; including Home Bargains. You really shouldn't need to use a load of kindling to get it going. I lit mine this morning with 8 small strips of kindling, 1 firelighter, a screwed-up bit of paper and 2 mid sized logs. 5 bits of kindling on the base of the stove. 2 logs placed on that. Paper put in between. Firelighter in the middle of the paper. 3 bits of kindling on top of that. Light it, shut the door and walk away. Job done.
  15. One of the local suppliers here is doing 1.5 cubic bags (approx equivalent to 1t) of softwood for £130 or hardwood for £160; free local delivery. One of my neighbours just got a delivery of 1.5 bags of hardwood and the quantity was way more than expected. Looks more like 2.5 bags and really nice looking wood too 👍 I messaged them to get a few bags myself ...... "Sorry, we're not taking on any more new customers this year" 😖 Seems to be the way things are going.
  16. Aye. Something 'Fishy' going on for sure 😆
  17. Rather than a trivet, I put a griddle on top of mine to protect the top. I can then use the whistling kettle/stove top coffee pot etc and not worry about it marking the top. I'm not planning on using the stove for cooking. But if the power goes out (storm/power cut) then it's always an option.
  18. Yes. Very true
  19. £370 a month !! Jeepers that's a lot. I'm £90 per month combined atm and moving up to £193 after Oct 1st (or so they think, and they are wrong). That's in a 3 bed bungalow on the coast; 2 adults. If i was already paying £370 i'd be freaking out, never mind what the potential increases might amount to. To incorrectly quote dads army: "We're all doomed ... doomed i tells ya" 😂
  20. Move over Martin Lewis !! This is what i call useful advice. I'll be off to Lidl tomorrow to buy up their kettle stock and save a fortune. The best bit is, if i boil them all at once, the steam will help heat the house. More money saved !! 🤪
  21. And No, i don't think Margo and Walter and the kids will suddenly freeze to death in their modern detached villa 😉 But they might have to buckle down, put on some extra socks, invest in a blanket or think about paying attention to shutting doors/windows that they would never have thought about before. It's the folk at the other end of the scale who will feel the bite more.
  22. Give it a few months and it'll be like The Hunger Games. Fights to the death over fruits and bits of kindling 🤣
  23. Sadly it happens all the time over winter; folk die of cold. Those who are in the worst situation often have to choose between heating and eating. Possibly because of the combination of the two, they are more susceptible to the affects off the cold. Now, before someone 🙄 jumps in and points out that this isn't a huge percentage of the population .... yes, i'm aware of that. I'm not saying it's every second person, only that it does happen and often enough that it hits the news. I'm also not saying they freeze to death in mid step, like a cartoon. Just that the cold is a clear factor of their demise. I think where this year is different, is that far more who would never have thought they'd be in this situation will be turning off their heat (or at least cutting it back to a bare min) purely out of lack of funds or over fear of impending bills.
  24. So you'd only accept it as being a free grant if it were also free to those that don't actually qualify for it ? OMFG 🤣 I'll bow out of this madness now.
  25. If you fall within the bracket of those the grants are there to help - yes, in most (if not all) cases it will be free. If you do not fall within the area of help - then no. But then you wouldn't be getting a grant, so you wouldn't be asked to pay. I also said that some research should be done to see what's available in the area the person is in and for their situation. I don't expect folk to blindly front up to grant companies and demand grants FREE because they seen me casually chatting about it on forum 😂
