    Echo CS-4310SX

That is good to hear.. I am VERY particular with what i cut and never go near the ground or cutting mucky wood. What do you think of full chisel on smaller saws?? From what i have read, you would think not enough power, but personally, i would think full chisel would consume less power [for the same rate of material removal] and be smoother too. Think lathe tools: If instead of having a sharp cornered tool, you had a round nosed one, you would run into chatter problems a LOT sooner. Only problem with the sharp edged tool is that the corner would tend to break down, so you would grind a small flat, bit like some saw chains have, [Chamfer chisel??] john..
  2. Very very good point... I certainly learnt something.. john..

    Echo CS-4310SX

Hi All, At the moment i am using my Echo CS-352ES. It is 35cc and has a 14" bar. Great saw, but when i went to adjust the chain the other day one of the bar studs started to unscrew out of the body of the thing. No big deal, i simply screwed it back, but i wondered if this is the beginning of the end for my saw [as the bar studs screw into plastic] so i started to look at others i could replace it with if needed. I was thinking that what i suppose you could call a "pro" saw might be better in the long run.. I want something equally light and handy as my old saw though. A CS-501SX would be a fair bit heavier as it has an 18" bar and also uses a lot more fuel. The CS-4310 is only about a pound heavier, uses not much more fuel [even though it has about half as much power again] and i thought would be just the thing?? The things have a 325 chain on them [95 in oregon terms]. Is this an improvement over 3/8 standard or 3/8 lo-pro?? Is there more or less chain choice?? Meanwhile the CS-7310SX is going great!! Just getting run in now i think. It is the first saw i ever used with a full chisel chain on it, and after all i have read i was expecting it to need sharpening every 2 minutes. Up to now i have cut LOADS [perhaps not by you lots standards] and it cuts just great, not had to sharpen it at all yet.. Seems best to stuff the dogs in and then feed it into the cut loading the motor right up. Loads of "grunt" to the thing and it flies through 20" diameter logs. I bought a chain for it as i have a 20" bar too [not used it yet though] Stihl do not do the right size [3/8 0.58"] so i got a husqvarna C-85. This looks very good chain.. john..
  4. Well, let me put it like this.. If you cut the tree down and the ground DOES swell, it is only going to go back to where it was BEFORE the tree was planted there which is well after the house was built.. I would imagine that having the tree there is going to greatly increase the usual seasonal cyclical movement that you would see if the house footings were not deep anough.. As openspaceman said, could very well be differential movement as a result of the extension having piled foundations.. Is the brickwork between the two tied in?? I would think it should not be as you have two different construction types.. If it were me i would remove the tree without a second thought.. You are not going to make things worse and you WILL reduce seasonal changes... Where are the cracks, how do they run.. Are they getting worse, do they open and close with the seasons?? john..
  5. I am no tree expert at all, but i will tell you this; 1, the tree will not have caused any damage.. YET. 2, it will be a different story when the thing is a 100 foot high huge thing though.. 3, if then some tree hugging idiot from the council slaps a tree preservation order on it, [which they can and will REGARDLESS of any damage the thing might be causing] you wil be stuck with the thing, THEN you WILL have something to worry about and an unsaleable house. So, go ahead and buy the house no worries, then same day cut the thing down as it has the POTENTIAL to one day ruin your life and next to bankrupt you.. john..
  6. Always good advice on this forum!! Thank you. john..
  7. I have seen Jameson ones in "real life" as it were, [in a shop] and they seemed ok?? What you think? I need to get to about 8 metres i think, i will check later on.. john..
  8. Hi All, Thinking of buying a pole saw set, you know, the sort ot thing with fibreglass poles.. What make would you recommend and what sort of length are they usable up to?? Thanks all. john..
  9. Hi All, anyone know where has actually got one of these in stock?? The 16" bar version i am after.. Thanks. john..
  10. Ahh, i have seen them "ecoplug" things but did not know what they were called.. Seen the price of them?? That Amcide stuff seems cheap though!! john..
  11. Hi all, Cut down a very large laurel last year. Needless to say the thing keeps trying to make a comeback. If i drill holes in the stumps and fill them with diesel, will that work or do i need some sort or proprietory stump killer?? john..
  12. But ARE they an "employee" I think you will find that they most definitely are... john..
  13. Depends if the "freelancer" is PROPERLY self employed or not. If he is a "labour only subcontractor" then he is not self employed at all, and is an employee of the firm, so the firms problem. [and no, a firm cannot make deductions out of your wages unless that is written into your contract] john..
  14. Got the video to work!! That is awesome!! Might make one myself!! john..
  15. How do you do that?? john..
  16. I could not get the video to work. Can you put it on youtube?? john..
  17. If the barrel length is less than 24" you would be in very big trouble.. john..
  18. Think you mean 12 ft/lb.. john..
  19. Would they not lose every time if you appealed though as i would have thought that there is absolutely no basis in law for that?? john..
  20. Hmmm, not so sure... 197 Planning permission to include appropriate provision for preservation and planting of trees. It shall be the duty of the local planning authority— (a)to ensure, whenever it is appropriate, [Note the magic word "appropriate]that in granting planning permission for any development adequate provision is made, by the imposition of conditions, for the preservation or planting of trees; and (b)to make such orders under section 198 as appear to the authority to be necessary in connection with the grant of such permission, whether for giving effect to such conditions or otherwise.. [S198 is the bit that empowers them to make a TPO if as it says above it; "appear to the authority to be necessary" They have not done this, they have looked at the case in question and obviously decided that it is NOT neccessary to impose TPO's or they would have done so.. Cut the trees down, go back to the council and say; "Hey, that report you wanted, you do not need one now as i have just cut the trees down" john..
  21. What did the muppets expect?? It is the same with bats now, anyone would have to be a raving looney to admit to having the things.. As for the councils, they just like to show off their power. Too bad they are not so keen on following the law of the land themselves.. [not to mention the corruption] There was a house near me. It was beautiful, stunning, very large too. The inside was amazing and all in good condition too.. A firm of developers wanted to knock it all down and put up a block of flats.. So, they start to knock it down.. Up come the council and slap a thing on it making it a listed building. The developer did not care and demolished it as the council bods watched.. Now, you need planning permission to demolish things [apparently] so why did the council not enforce this, and, remember it was now a listed building, and make them stop and put it back as it was?? [they had only knocked down a small bit up to now] No, the entire thing was demolished in front of the council bods.. What you think the council did next??? Went and gave them planning permission to put up the flats.. How much money changed hands there then?? Also near me is an entire street of houses. All along a river bank on one side of a river they are. Now, to get to this street you have to cross a road bridge. Yep, public highway, it was the main road once till a bypass was built. Anyway, a local authority has a DUTY to maintain roads under S41 of the highways act 1980. They have now decided that the bridge is faulty and simply closed it leaving an entire street sealed off. What about the DUTY to maintain the road?? No worries about observing the law there then?? They spent a fortune on supposedly repairing it [all came to nothing] and a bigger fortune worrying about fish. All they had to do was to get a new steel bridge made and forget about the old one... [leaving aside the fact that you would not have to be Brunel to have sorted the old one.] Far from helping bats and trees, the councils have merely made life harder for them [the bats and trees i mean] Speaking of bats; The house i mentioned.. In a nearby garden were some trees. The landowner put in for planning but this was effectively blocked as there were trees of a sort that bats like apparently. No way was anything to be done to these trees. No bats mind you, just the sort of trees that bats like.. All of a sudden all the trees are cut down and now there are a row of very nice houses just being finished off at the moment. If anyone got into trouble for cutting down the trees i have no idea, but the houses are there now.. I think that what the law of the land actually is, depends a GREAT deal on how much money you have.. john..
  22. Yes, and then all extension building would cease, permanently.. If it were me i would just cut the things down and worry about it later.. john..
  23. Yes, initially down to two foot deep!! [and they will be two foot wide too [at least] Nobody in their right mind would do that. Then they say that if you do use a digger that you have to dig it out by scraping away 10 to 20mm at a time as opposed to "digging" as they termed it. [by which i assume they mean using the bucket curl as opposed to the arm] Guess nobody told them that is what you are supposed to do, use long shallow pulls and NOT curl the bucket, but 10mm at a time will not be too much fun.. john..
