    Don't get me wrong, I'm not directly blaming the employees as they can't know every single qualification under the sun BUT they should be able to pass me to someone who knows what they are talking about or they should have access to something which says. For example, "Qualified tree surgeon" could in fact mean "Qualified Arboricultural surveyor with training in land subsidence caused by trees" but apparently in this case it means anyone who is a "qualified tree surgeon" by their own definition, i.e. anyone with CS30.

    Whilst I mostly agree with what you're saying about inconstancies I think it is at the fault of the insurance company. It is them writing the documents and it is also them making the rules, not us. It would be like them saying that structural damage to a house must be inspected by a qualified builder, but who is that? A bricklayer? A bathroom fitter? The Wickes kitchen guy? They already know that it has to be inspected by a surveyor. They are going to the lengths to add additional things to policies to ensure their ass is covered so they don't have to pay out if someone lets a tree damage their home and knows about it so why wouldn't they go to the lengths of knowing who they need to do the inspection? It's them asking for the inspection to be carried out, I guess anyone with CS30 and above can do it for aviva!

    Went and picked up a MS881 today but they only had it in a 41" as they came as bundles so didn't have a powerhead alone. Anyone want to buy the 41" bar and chain? It's never touched wood. They are on the FRjones site for £196.32 with vat and PP so I would sell it for £160 with postage and packaging if someone wants it?

    So the customer has contacted the broker and apparently a written report is not needed. She just needs to keep a note on file that she has had a tree surgeon in every couple of years to check the trees. You know what, I don't care anymore 😂 I give up. Insurance is such a farce. One minute they aren't interested and say you don't need anything extra done then when an claim goes in they ask for the file of paperwork they expected you to keep. This is why I am so anal about insurance. It's all fun and games until you need to make a claim.

    So I have spent 28 minutes on the phone with Aviva. I do appreciate that they let you chose the music you listen to whilst you slowly lose the will to live. I chose "pop/hits" for a wonderful collection of music from 2001. I eventually got through to customer services who told me they had no idea so sent me to claims. Another 3 minute wait. I then spoke to a girl who was very nice but also didn't know and said "as long as you're qualified" but also didn't know about the inspection requirements that the customer presented me with so she popped me back on hold and had a chat with her manager. After a total of 28 minutes I was told that it might be an additional requirement on the policy after a previous subsidence claim. They needed the policy documents and I don't have authorisation. I need to get the customer to ask (who won't know the qualification requirements) or get the customer to approve my request. How this is so difficult I don't know?!

    I did the same as you by the looks of it and had a read and found the bit about keeping trees and shrubs well trimmed. I think the home insurance people ask if you have any trees over 3M within 6M of your house and she said yes which led to this little gem of a requirement.

    This is it isn't it. They obviously need to modify their policy documents because "Qualified Tree surgeon" doesn't really mean anything. Like you say, it means you can take a tree out or do some pruning but there is no part of the training that covers tree root growth and their interaction with property. It also makes me look like a bit of a tit when the documents say "Qualified tree surgeon" and I have to explain to the customer how I am qualified but also not qualified.... I tried to ring them today but they are shut with the bank holiday so I'll try again tomorrow. Another job to add to the list!

    Thanks for the advice. Like I said though, I have absolutely no training whatsoever so it's not a risk I'm willing to take for myself or the client who will end up with a piece of paper that means jack if there becomes an issue! When I find out from Aviva what they want then I'll post it up here in case anyone else stumbles across this

    As Ian says, don't undersell yourself. Even if you are inexperienced you had to go out and buy all the PPE and you have to get to site and pay for food etc. If you're turning up and dragging brash, sweeping, clearing the smaller twigs so people aren't tripping over, feeding the chipper etc you're still benefiting them. Don't put yourself out of pocket even if that means £50 a day for the first few whilst you get some experience, cover your costs!

    It's definitely more expensive! I've only recently shifted to aspen and I have 3L of HP Ultra to use up so I just buy aspen 4 and mix it otherwise the oil would just sit there and eventually get given away or something! I appreciate the advice! I just know my local dealer prefers selling aspen (probably more financially beneficial) they have motomix but it doesn't seem to shift 😂 I'll see how I get on with the milling, I won't be a full time miller but I'm sure I will smash through the aspen!

    To be fair, aspen is cheaper. They sell motomix too. Maybe I'll give it ago and try the difference. Can't imagine it's much if anything though!

    Is there an issue with warranty and aspen? I use aspen 4 with Stihl HP Ultra mixed with it. I can't imagine that would be a warranty issue? I'll ask them when I pick it up

    I'm sure it will be. They know I'm running it on aspen anyway. Pretty sure it's what they put in there for set up anyway as I don't imagine they go out to get fuel and mix it when they can just get a bottle of aspen out.

    Fair enough! I need to look into it more. Nothing more annoying than having to get a leylandii out with a pigeon nest in it. I've never had issues with "normal" birds, just bloody pigeons!

    Ah okay, I just read through the act and it has exceptions. One of which is for pest species and for An authorised person (eg a landowner or occupier) may kill or take, in certain situations and by certain methods, so called 'pest species' and destroy or take the nest or eggs of such a bird. This is permissible under the terms of General Licences issues by government departments (see Licences). Then, the GL licences make it possible to destroy nests if you read them

    Thanks for all the replies! I'm going to ring Aviva and ask so I can actually be useful for the customer and tell them who they need instead of just saying no. They want advice about if the roots could cause foundation damage in the next two years, that's all. They aren't interested in anything else. Either way I don't have the experience or knowledge to give advice on this or anything that covered insurance requirements, I was just curious as to the experiences/feedback from others! The trees are about 4" and 6" at chest height and there is no way that they could cause foundation damage. The apple tree for example I can almost reach the tips at the top with my hand stood on the ground.

    Bit of a bump if anyone is looking for a worker. I also hold CS40 (pruning) and CS41 (rigging). I also now have a MK8 Transit tipper and a Forst ST6P chipper that can come as part of the package if needed!

    I agree with all of you and and I told the client I'm not trained in inspection at all nor would I be covered for professional advice and I also wouldn't be qualified so my word means nothing. I think she just wants it done with minimal fuss. Basically these trees are between 4" and 9" at chest height and theres nothing to them but they are covered under a tpo apparently. Just a bit odd because a tree surgeon and arboricultural surveyor are two completely different things. It doesn't make sense to put tree surgeon when they mean arboricultural surveyor. Apparently they don't even want a written report?

    Hi everyone, Did a small removal and some pruning for a client today. She also has a 2.8m apple, a 3.5m Quince and a ~4m pear about 6m from the house. The insurance company wants an inspection carried out for subsidence/possible structural damage from the trees within 7m that are over 3m. I don't carry surveying qualifications or PTI which I told the client. She's sure that I could do it and produced the requirement from Aviva which says "a 24 month inspection for possible subsidence or future root damage carried out by a qualified tree surgeon?". Anyone know what qualified tree surgeon actually means? I would imagine PTI and/or inspection quals but she's adamant I can do it.

    In case anyone stumbles across this, I had a look for cloggers but I can't get any in the UK so I went for a pair of arbortex breatheflex pros which are super comfy and feel a little like lycra with the flex. 👌

    Pigeons aren't protected and excluded from the nesting birds laws as they are a pest species as far as I'm aware?
