  1. Did she grow her own?
  2. A tenner each? Buy 5, get the 6th free?
  3. I had a few big stumps in the way of the house when we were building, our digger driver did 2 things: dug a big hole, dropped the stumps in, smashed them down and buried them... And for one big willow stump in the middle of a patch of daub, just pressed it down... down... down it went, and the grey semi-liquid clay just closed in on top of it by itself. Very impressive to watch.
  4. Well Stere, check the other stump thread at the moment... is the whole stump really removed if you've only ground it down to 10-15cm below the surface? Depending on what is being done with the space after the stumps are gone, just grinding might not be good enough. Grass or a flower bed or left to nature, fine... replanting big trees, or putting in parking or a patio, or burying a water pipe... not fine.
  5. So you're saying you might need a second mattock?
  6. Morning. Was supposed to be subbing for a guy today and tomorrow, but he has the lurgy and postponed until next Thursday Friday. So I'll move Monday's job to tomorrow, and take the dogs for a long walk up the mountain today instead. Everybody wins!
  7. Outstanding work.
  8. Time and a place, I suppose... not sure when or where, but I'm sure it exists. Starving to death outside a refugee camp? I think Huel beats the alternative there! I have four puff pastry parcels in the oven; mushroom, onion, goat cheese, various herbs and spices. For lunch for the wife and I tomorrow: one for her, three for me. Edit, shneaky peek: Getting there. Damn. Should have made 5.
  9. Back in my music festival days, the outfit I was with sometimes did a loaded mac'n'cheese stand in addition to the backstage catering. Optional toppings included the crispy onions you have there, shredded bacon, jalapeños, sweetcorn, chopped coriander and, occasionally, lobster tails.

Ah, shite... you removed the wrong stump! The one you got rid of had immense sentimental value...
  11. There isn't a market for it yet, but tree stumps should be a valued resource for any beardy-weirdy gardening types offering habitat creation and rewilding and the like. A roots-akimbo tree stump next to a brand-new wildlife pond is peak garden aesthetic right now.

    Jokes???

Blobs of choux pastry, deep fried instead of baked, tossed in sugar. I used to serve a savoury version by beating in soft goat's cheese to the raw choux pastry dough before frying it.

The pragmatist in me would probably draw a line under it, take it on the chin, and move on; but I am keen to hear on what our resident eastern European representative has to say on the matter.

Well that looks pretty f*cking ground to me, what were they expecting, a tunnel?

I can't see the pictures either, but in my opinion a stump carries on below the ground until you reach soil again, with the chunkiest bit of the roots included. Not as much as grubbing it out with a bucket of course, but a goodly portion. What's a .heic file? It wants me to download another program to view it, which won't be happening.
  16. Flying it, good stuff.
  17. Cheers dude, we appreciate that. He was pleasantly surprised at the lack of pain when he woke up, but I did warn him that the fresh surgical cuts aren't the thing that gets you... it's when the nerves start repairing themselves and the healing process begins that thr real fun starts! Anyway, it's only fair that he gets a little bit of pain, because he's been nothing but a pain in the backside to my mother for the last decade! How's your knee getting on?
  18. Absolutely, I'll see if anyone does want it before we push it into the lake, but it's definitely a sold-as-seen kind of car by now. And really, if it isn't worth enough to be worth the hassle, either as banger or scrap, I'll probably give it to the fire service to practice on. Same as I'd like to be chopped up by medical students when I'm not using my own earthly vessel anymore, I think our beloved old Passat would enjoy being set on fire and ripped apart for the benefit of others.
  19. Ahh, kind of at the other end of the scale, the Passat... it's a 2008, and I don't think I paid much more than the year for it, cash... Funny story, the guy was selling it because he said the seat was too low for his wife... I agreed, it was awfully low. First thing we did after driving around the corner was pump the handle a dozen times to lift it up a bit higher... Anyway, it's dealt with a lot since we got it 5 years ago, I've asked her to do things any reasonable Passat would shudder at, and she's starting to show a good bit of wear and tear! So the advert will read more along the lines of "Half-crippled VW Passat seeks quiet lay-by to disintegrate in. Not recommended for spares or repairs, everything is already f*cked. Disingenuous reason for sale."
  20. So, err, back to the original topic. Like I mentioned, I'm hoping up upgrade from our battered old Passat to a pickup. Did we reach a consensus in the end that, yes, there will be a surge in available second hand pickups after Christmas? I'm already looking for a few options over the border, are those options going to start looking more appealing?
  21. That said... is there anything living in that hole, 2m up the right-hand stem? The Y union looks grand, but I'd want to stick my hand as far into that hole as possible before recommending anything, one way or another. If it's surface or superficial, grand, leave it; but if it's deep and growing... maybe an alternative route is needed. If it's filled with something exciting like bats or owls or squirrels... one route could be to take the top off it a bit above the hole and leave a coronet cut, preserving the existing habitat and creating a new one at the same time, and leave the other stem to take over. That's what I'd be chatting about to the owner instead of reductions and bracing, but then again, it isn't my shed underneath the tree...
  22. Fell it, take the Y in a decent chunk and turn it into a catapult for launching watermelons into hippo/gorilla/etc enclosures at a zoo. As others have said, I would recommend to the owner to either keep it or don't. I wouldn't offer to dick around with it.
  23. My dad had tib-fib surgery on Friday morning, no external metalwork thank god, but lots of metal inside. 79, definitely not climbing trees up to his surgery date. Not going to be easy! (Conversely, I was skiing the day before my ACL surgery, on June 26th 2018... that probably helped with the rehab!) Simple job for me today, garden tidy up for someone. Thank God, I could do with the rest.
  24. It's about bloody time.
  25. I've heard the Milwaukee m12 tophandle (is it really, though? A tophandle?) is the best out of all the tool brand saws, I looked into the Dewalt options because that's what batteries I have, and they just don't seem as good. Pity. As for the Stihl, I still rave about my MSA 200 to anyone who will listen, and it'll probably fit the bill just perfectly for you. Great saw.
