  1. Really interesting exchange over the last few pages dudes, exactly the kind of thing I joined up to read. Lots to think about. Cheers.
  2. Still no job for me, but last night I went to see the guy who offered me work aaall the way back in the end of August, and he said he still wants me to start as soon as I'm healthy enough again, so I'm pretty fucking thrilled at that. Looking at getting going in the middle of January, on a couple of jobs I think he had to put on hold until he had another climber available. But today's job was getting this carbon fiber frame taken off my wrist, which is awesome. Now I can get my throwbag out and get up in the trees again!
  3. I did mine (plus stump grinder and some bullshit business module that wasn't worth the day) over 20 days with accomodation for three grand. It'd be a bit of a squeeze to cram it all into a week.
  4. Slow day at work guys?
  5. We had a go at spiking up an overhanging pole on our CS38. Great fun!
  6. Yes yes, we know, but what exactly were you given for lunch? That could make or break the deal!
  7. Come on, you're in France... you know that there's some pretty spectacular lunches out there. I'd trim the lawn at Manoir aux Quat'Saisons with my teeth if I got three courses at the end of it.
  8. ^^ please see post above, it's hard to see but he has an anchor high up in the left stem, visible in the longer video (2 min 45ish)
  9. So it's hard to see in the short and blurry 8 second clip posted at the start of this thread, but there's a much longer version available in AO on Facebook that clearly shows a rope high up in the left stem... so he (or someone else?!) had already gone up to a decent height and could have taken the right stem from much higher up... Give me a second and I'll see if I can link the longer video. Edit: Tricky to embed the video, follow this link: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1521424731466112/permalink/2214678398807405/ The guy is also working for a good minute on what looks to be a gob before making his final cut, although it is hard to tell from this angle and distance.

^^ He looks like he knows what he's about. I'm due to get another dog next year, if there's something like that going spare near here then it's a brilliant idea.

    Rats

Having bathed a cat before, and learned that they actually have an extra, secret level of claw retraction, only to be used in emergencies, I think I'd rather have the rats.

Well, shit! I set the alarm nice and early so I can have a relaxed sit down with a coffee before the wife and two children are awake, perch myself atop the throne, and as soon as I open the floodgates there's the sound of someone pissing on the floor behind me... after pulling the emergency shutoff valve I crouch down and have a look... It seems the bastards have chewed through the shitty plastic connection between the u-bend and the wall. That's just not fair sportsmanship, toying with a man so early in the morning.
  13. Absolutely, if the right way to do a job takes a hundred times longer but you get to keep all your vertebrae intact, people should know why they need to take the longer option.
  14. Bloody hell! Any news on the guy?

    Jokes???

I'll be desperately trying to squeeze that into every conversation for the next two weeks, thanks.
  16. Bad enough being lost in Wales on the ground, let alone in the air.
  17. Yeah, you can't say you were unable to get out of the sky, your standards for how to achieve it were just too high.
  18. Aye, an arm and a leg...
  19. At least you managed to hang on to that axe though! Every cloud has a silver lining...

That sounds beautiful. I bet you couldn't rig that up again somewhere else if you tried! I've been back in my new home in Ireland for a few days now, the scurrying in the roof is still there. I was hoping that they might have died of loneliness whilst we were back in France for the last few months, but no joy. I really liked the look of these when the rat discussion was last had on here, and I'll be investing in one or two for sure: https://goodnaturetraps.co.uk/trapproducts/rat-stoat/ ...but then I've always wanted an air rifle since I was young as well, so even if the Good Nature traps work brilliantly, I'll just have to tell the wife that they aren't 100% effective, and we need a more instant response as well. She'll understand.
  21. Ha, absolutely. Where was your avalanche? They are definitely not things to argue with. I too have lost an axe under a few hundred tons of snow, and I'm thrilled that's all we lost. Placing individual blame on avalanche events is often futile in my opinion, unless triggered by someone above you in a different party, or if you are under the supervision of a guide. Otherwise... it's usually a group decision to be there in that place, at that time, and everyone has both the right and the responsibility to say so if they aren't confident in the conditions. I've pulled the plug on a few outings before, friends of mine have made the call too, I'm sure your brother could have voiced his concerns before the event as well, if he'd wanted.
  22. Crikey, yeah I can believe it, Tignes and Val D get some scary huge avalanches in late spring, it can be carnage. I saw some incredible videos of wet snow slides from there this spring just gone, terrifying stuff.
  23. No, that's a 10 meter chimney I'm being lowered down, about 3 hours into the rescue. I don't have many pictures available of the day and I'm off the grid for the next few days (48 hour journey to Ireland...), but I'll see what I can rustle up when I get there. I have a couple of pictures that illustrate my vague flight path and landing spot. Co. Sligo. My wife is from Strandhill, we are moving to near Lissadell. Not at all, best way to go about it. No point being serious and miserable about... well, anything really. Life is better if you can see the humour in things. And thanks, everyone. It's been a tough few weeks, but we are through the worst of it.
  24. Well, I had a job lined up in Ireland, to where we are moving, tomorrow morning, from France... obviously with this stick on my arm, that kind of puts everything on hold. The guy who offered me work has been very understanding, and says we'll have to see how long it takes to recover from the injuries. But I speak fluent rehab and I know I can get healthy again quick.
  25. I was in hospital for 4 days originally, 2-3 weeks ago, and I'm just leaving again now after 3 more days following an infection of one of my screws, which was a total bummer to have to deal with. But still... it beats the alternative.
