  1. Hear you. Probably will in the future but only when I need the saved calories more than the experience if you know what I mean!
  2. I was joking OMG..... VERY useful post that's why I liked it!
  3. I will no doubt keep you posted and I'll even take picks so you I can be accurately and fully flamed to death. I've always been of the mind that if I'm going to be accused of being an asshat, at least be accurate in your assessment. I'll take it. I am going to do this shit!!
  4. All mental. Mate of mine passed out when visiting me in hospital and watching the nurse put in a saline drip. Right there an then dropped to the floor. He doesn't climb but you get my point..
  5. He's being a dick about it IMO. I'm not actually going to start banging out massive trees off the bat. I'm just going to process what I can. Very small stuff and learn what I can and I will be taking on people who I can learn from. Sue me if I'm going into something that I've wanted to do for 10 years but never had the time or money to pursue before.
  6. Why are they unlucky if they are happy to pay the quoted price and you do the job they required? Most of the time it'll be underestimated also, as it always is, without knowledge. You just don't like the idea of someone coming into an industry you have been in your whole life and possibly pulling it off. It doesn't devalue your achievements in life if I make a success of this... If someone is willing to start a company and under quotes me to build a portfolio and client base it doesn't annoy me if they're paying tax and insurance. It's fair play. It's capitalism. You have a massive chip on your shoulder!
  7. With great difficulty. Start small turn down anything even remotely out of my comfort zone. Send videos to friends who do know about the job. Make mistakes and learn. That's business.
  8. 3 of the guys who work for me are all school friends. Their friend is the top climber for a massive tree company near me and I met him for the first time the other day and it was an encounter of what I felt was mutual respect. He will subbie for me and offered to climb with me when we get free time to show me some pointers. But he works full time so it means on his holiday or weekends. I do quotes weekends and try and have some kind of life... Don't really know how to work it. Also I don't have all the machines, far from it. Just some, and have put a deposit on a jo beau m500.
  9. I just wanted to add... I aim for greatness in everything. I treat every action like a Japanese sword maker. Not for ego or pride but in an aim for clarity and perfection of thought. Everything I ever do I do to the best of my ability and this is the first time in my life I've ever embarked on anything with a knowledge that I'll never be great. I'll aim for it as always but realistically I'll never be great. Probably one day I'll know a lot about trees and I'll be better than average climber, maybe. I fully appreciate what this discipline is!
  10. No need to be a dick really is there! I frankly don't think I'm a tree surgeon. Far from it. I'm awed by the profession I'm moving into and take it very seriously. I've never considered myself really good at anything prior to at least 5 years of doing it almost continuously so I'll be an old man if I'm EVER good at this. And I don't really care what I earn as long as I learn. I just am trying to figure out values of things. Get over yourself!
  11. Good info. Thanks.
  12. It would be a 3 way 3.5 ton tipper trailer with chip box towed by either an unsigned 4x4 or a very large van that is sign written. Chipper would be a self propelled 120mm chipper
  13. I appreciate that but I'm really more thinking about aerial rescue scenarios than anything else.
  14. So basically double rope technique sucks in many practical way and in speed of rescue. However you look at it, if I'm not in the tree with him, I'm farting around with a big shot or double roping up to him to hook up and secure and lower down... I'm pretty calm when the shit hits the fan but throwing a rope up a damn tree to then double roping up the tree why a guy is bleeding out does not seem acceptable to me. Surely a fixed secondary line is the way to go with single rope technique apparatus fixed to your harness?
  15. If someone's use single rope technique you're not gonna have the luxury of time getting a second rope up. Would you ascend his line and hook to him and double prussic down or what? Would a person using single rope technique attach a secondary rescue line or would this cause problems with working?
  16. I'm starting to realise that some things you can't really learn ALL by yourself. I'm wondering whether to hire myself out as a groundie with obviously tickets for chainsaw cross cut and small fell and climbing and aerial rescue with a vehicle, chipper and 3.5 ton trailer so I can be around the business. What would I be worth as a groundie with all saws, kit, and the above machinery? Would it be a problem if there was signage on a vehicle? And do you think a local company would have a problem with this knowing that I have an established fencing company that is going into trees?
  17. That is correct! Or you can use blakes hitch.
  18. A little harsh perhaps... I did a weeks long climbing and aerial rescue course and I have a shit memory. I did use double rope technique just didn't think about my answer. I do vaguely know the difference but yeah I intend to teach myself as much as possible once I'm not working 60-80 hour weeks. Winter basically I intend to read and spend time learning not just lots of extra techniques as well as immerse myself in all things trees generally.
  19. Prussocking! I saw the use of a zigzag but did not use it.
  20. Haven't done much research into pricing but guessing the pulley is FAR cheaper than the zigzag. However, I would imagine the pulley gets more in the way than the zigzag. Just starting I don't want to be all the gear no idea kinda person and wanna keep spending down due to well, basically too much spending lately. Was tempted to start with just prussocking to have to work the body more but I'm already slow as shit, anything really to keep the rope tight and out of the way and reduce fatigue might be advantageous. If I was 20 I'd maybe think differently but I'm starting late.
  21. I will bitch and moan till the end...
  22. Turf laying is hard in any weather. Customers never really appreciate how much watering is required afterwards either in this weather. I'm like 5 liters per meter x3 per day for 2 weeks if it's baking hot and they are like WTF
