    Porting

It’s had the squish band cut, base cut, port timing altered (exhaust intake and upper transfers), ports widened / reshaped, ignition timing advance and a muffler mod. Here’s some pics of the squish band before and after and the muffler mod.

A couple of saws I’ve just finished. Found a recipe I’m liking for the 550xp mark II. That MS440 is a clean saw, not done much work. Nice to work on them as they’re getting rarer.
  3. I might have a 572 available, let me check something in the morning. I had someone ask me about it and I just want to confirm if he’s taking it or not. I can also get adjustable carb MS462s if you’re interested. If it was me I’d have a ported 572. Or a 372 but that wasn’t one of the choices. [emoji23]

Yeah I spoke to someone about this recently. £500 was a bargain. I can do some slightly better prices off eBay but unfortunately not that cheap.

I can get these if anyone is interested.

    Looking forward to it. [emoji106]

This will be going under the knife very soon.

More pipes [emoji16] The bigger ones for a 372 big bore with a 272 piston I’ve built. Will see how it runs.

Can’t beat a couple of pipes in the morning [emoji23]

I had thought the original post about not much gains and just noise was about a bark box. If you pipe it the wee saw wakes right up.

    Porting

Yeah there’s big gains opening up the 2511 muffler. It’s a totally different saw.

Nothing wrong with tinkering though [emoji16] can always make something better.

Twin ports do have a nice sound off them.

I think the original quote was about bark boxes.

    Better pic of one.

This is a 572 I did. It really changed the tone. It is slightly louder but more a grunt than a scream.

One of the biggest differences with that you’ll notice is the revs when it’s dogged in. It keeps the high revs. Doesn’t back down.

Was cutting a big lump of beech.

This is the same 500i in the other vid. This was test cuts after porting. You can hear it adjusting in the vid.

The mufflers depend on what’s done inside the saw when porting. The more you open it up the more can be done because it can process more fuel. My guy got back to me. It uses more fuel for sure. The 500i is an awesome saw. Ported it’s just an animal. So as I said it depends what you want. Next one I do I’ll do a comparison vid stock vs ported.

Depends what you want out it really, bigger bar, faster cut speed etc. If a dealer knows it’s ported it’ll void the warranty. Depends on the dealer and what’s the issue I suppose. If it’s something you’re uncertain of then probably best to wait. I’ve ported plenty of brand new saws straight out the box but it’s preference. Once you run a ported saw most people stick with them. I’ll ask the last guy I did a 500 for what the fuels like.
  24. Agree with this 100%. Unfortunately some dealers don’t take the time to check the saws properly. Pressure, vac test etc. They try and throw parts at issues without finding the route cause. I once bought a saw from a dealer for repair as it was supposed to be seized and they were scraping it. Turned out a clutch retainer had snapped and jammed the clutch. It cost me less than £2 to fix.
  25. Did you blast it with an air gun after soaking it? Yeah they are annoyingly sensitive. They just need really small movements to tune. Sometimes it’s good to go back to the factory settings and start from there. Does help having a tach but these are the factory settings.
