  1. Mine was manual but I can definitely agree on it being thirsty for oil. I thought it was a fault until everyone else on the VW forum said “yup, same here”

I leased mine and I’m glad I handed it back because once the honey moon period wore off, I realised that I’m spending well over double the amount for a van. Really there’s nothing special about them. God knows who actually pays 42k for a van and that’s only the mid range!!!

It was built well in terms of rigidity and I loved the fact it was fast and pulled like a train but...that’s about it...oh it looks good too.

I think I have a love/hate thing going on with Transporters.

Yeah our one is my good ladies car. It’s a 7 seater rather than a van. We had VW do all the checks on the oil, weighing it etc. They said all though oil consumption is high it’s within tolerance. I think on a trip to the Alps 2 years ago I calculated the oil use to be 85 to 90 ml per 100 miles driving.
She’s had enough of it now and wants a long wheel base wrangler. Fine by me I quite like those.

  2. Before I got my first works truck I used to use my T6. I never had 4motion but it had some serious grunt with the 204psi block. Lovely van to use, I miss being able to sharpen my saws under cover of the tail lift.

Just about to sell a 2015 4motion. Absolutely hate the thing. Terrible handling , DSG box is jerky and they drink oil like diesel.
At least they hold their money so should get a good return

  3. Ticking is the fuel pump isn’t it?

    Possibly the barrel?

    I believe so.
But there should also be an audible click of the relay
I changed both the fuel filters and checked the lines so happy there’s no blockage. Turns over but won’t fire so thinking maybe the relay to the pump and glow plugs is gone.
Typically I couldn’t find my multimeter to check it.
  4. Sunday maintenance Today I’m afraid.

The tw150 was put away working fine. Next time it came out the preheat was not working. No light / no ticking noise. Electrics aren’t my thing but I’d the likely culprit a simple fuse or relay issue. ? If so can anyone point me to where the correct ones are for the pre heat ?

    Many thanks

  5. I carry out quite a lot of paddock maintenance through spring and summer. Spraying is a good earner.

I wouldn’t be licensed for spraying although not averse to getting a ticket. What do you spray and why ?
How do you calculate your costs for more regular maintenance like harrowing and rolling ?
    Cheers
  6. The only paddock maintenance I do is poo picking and some strimming now and then and that  is for free [emoji16]

That’s the worst work going Stubby .......... free.
Never mind my missus seems to make me do lots of free work too [emoji23]

  7. At the moment I think it is voluntary . Croften Manor  are on lock down as that is were the out break occurred .  We have a horse that went there a few days ago for a competition and it is now in quarantine and the vet has taken blood .  ( we are in West Dean , West Sussex and Corften is just up the road in Hampshire ) . Until the results come in no body wants to risk it . It is fatal for the horse .

Well let’s hope yours is alright and it’s sorted quickly.
Ah you are just down the road from me.
Do you take on any paddock contracting yourself?
  8. You can't catch it but at a stretch you could carry it if you let an affected horse sneeze on you then go and have contact with another un affected horse .  Not very likely I know but , people , ( women ) are very protective of their horses . I am married to one  !

Is there an actual quarantine in force and if so what’s the radius and expected length of time ?
  9. No body is going anywhere at the moment with an outbreak of equine herpes  at Croften Manor in Hampshire . All competitions cancelled and lots of yards on lock down .

I wasn’t planning on getting that close to the horses............

  10. Looking for feedback and advice from others who have added additional services like equestrian paddock maintenance

Thinking ahead to spring I will be getting the harrows and roller on my field and keeping the grass in check with a flail mower

Do any of you provide this service for local equestrian yards ? If so how are you pricing it and what are the general going rates. Is it worth doing as an additional service ?

    Tia

  12. Hi all,

I just wanted to post a thread to get others' opinions on this topic, as I'm sure there's variation out there.
I've been a sub contracting climber for 8 years now (and consultant for a short while) here in the UK and have never come to a conclusion.

As a self employed climber or groundsman charging 'X' amount as a day rate, you'd obviously get X for the standard 8/9 hours worked that day.
But what if you work 4/5 hours... would you still expect your day rate?
For instance, if you worked hard and got the job done in good time.
(I know this depends on circumstance, such as if my employers job got cancelled last minute, I would not expect X amount if a replacement job couldn't be found)

My current main employer normally lays another job on us if we get the main job done in good time, squeezing the most out of us. (This aggravates the sh*t out of me)

But also, if you're a self employed consultant working for larger companies, say you book the day off to do a survey they asked you to do and it takes you 2 hours to do the inspection and 1 hour to type it up. Do you charge 3 hours and lose the rest of the day... or charge the whole day because you booked it out for that survey? This happens to me quite a lot.

All constructive comments welcome and look forward to reading what other subbies and employers do.

    Cheers!

Haven’t you answered your own question. If you sub contract yourself at a day rate surely you can’t expect the main contractor not to use you all day. Good business sense from him.
If you work harder than normal to get the job done quickly it’s as if it was price work not day rate. You either need to slow down and stop knackering yourself or have a pre agreed set of rates for hours / half days etc. If you put yourself out there on day rate don’t expect not to be used for a day.
It’s a bit different if it’s the job is finished maybe an hour earlier than expected. It would then be unreasonable to push on to another.
I would say switch to price work for your consultation stuff. It will most likely work out better for you and the client.

  13. I’m in the market for a used quad bike. Around 350 cc with 4x4 etc.

I know very little about them , other than the usual Honda Yamaha’s Suzuki Kawasaki etc are any other brands worth considering.

All the Polaris and can am seem to be more than I’m wanting to spend.

I just need a machine for moving mostly animal feed around my field and woods. It’s pretty wet in the winter so as long as it’s a capable mud plugger and reliable I’m not fussy about it.

Any advice on used machines appreciated

  14. Do any of you stabilise the wood for the handles so it's more durable and if a stalkers knife it can be cleaned.

Need lots of kit to stabilise it. I don’t have a vacuum so just buy the handle scales/blanks.
There is some variation in quality with the mail orders and ideally I would like to hand pick the stuff but on the whole it’s the age old you get what you pay for ...
