hello, do you still have the larch If so has it been felled yet? I could be interested in an artic load. Steve

    Hi Steve

Nick from Elmsdown Forestry came up and took a look. He's keen on the timber so will have first dibs on it. I await an update from the trust on when it may be felled so will chase them. Your name is second on the list

    many thanks

  2. I was going to have a punt at a White Oak . Common in the U.S. but as you say not so much here . .

Quite a gnarly looking one from the picture.
Usually more an arboretum tree over here
I think they are decent timber when straight. Floor boards and the like.
  3. Evening all. Didn’t realise the 880 was history. I have one as new, never used, did start it once on Aspen just to feel the power. Bought  the saw to start milling with, but that never materialised. So, although it has been started, it has never seen any timber, does that make it secondhand? Maybe it’s time to sell?

Pm me some details / price if you like. Cheers
  4. Nice idea Felix.

Other things that does my nut in are clients who want a multiple tree quote where they want a breakdown of what each tree will cost.

Tell me what you want done, I'll give you a price, it's not pick'n'mix.

That annoys me too. If I’m going to a client to cut one tree my price will be higher for that one tree than if I was doing multiple trees at the same location. Simple economics of the logistics isn’t it. And breaking it down tree by tree in quotes gets really boring ...........

  5. 550xp mk2 from your list.
I haven’t used any of the new top handle saws in anger. Still using my ms200 and spud tweaked echo 2511 which is epic.
Tbh I’d say you won’t go wrong with any of the brands but if you are just buying one I’d stick with a 2stroke machine at the moment. Battery saws are getting better but not good enough to be your only option at this time.

  6. Handy reach on that crane .

It is indeed. Can’t remember what the reach is but I cut those bits into 18ft lengths and it stretched down to the butt from the same spot and dragged it up the slope on a sling before picking it up. Lifts a tidy weight with ease. I would imagine the big piece must of weighed 2.5 -3 ton.

  7. A mate of mine gave me the updated edition, entitled 'War and Piss', for Christmas. I think that Neptune's Kiss is my favourite to date: image.thumb.png.db22401ec9e22d89e2f35103035e8d4e.png

A good book for the crapper. I don’t think my missus will find it quite so funny if I leave a copy there though [emoji23]
  8. Chipwood makes pretty good money at the moment. I was asking about location as it'll influence the price a bit. If you were local, we might be able to help with the harvesting or point you in the direction of customers.

Larch makes superb firewood, but getting firewood customers to take it is the issue. There would be sawlog material from the stand too.

    The stand is in Surrey.
    My initial thoughts were Biomass.

I agree with the firewood situation. Great firewood but the end users won’t buy it in this area. They are drilled into think only hardwood is decent.
  9. That is a ridiculous condition, and I don't know anyone commercially planting larch. To do so is madness with the endemic status of phytophthora ramorum.

Anyway, if the site is to be mulched, ground impact isn't going to be an issue. I'd just get a harvester in and clear it out in a few days. It's going to be the most economical way of doing it. Whereabouts is the stand?

Entirely ridiculous and a total waste of money and time but there we go that is what it is.

Point is what’s the best profit for selling the timber on ?
  10. So I have been allocated 3 acres of Larch plantation to fell for a charity based trust. I carry out a reasonable amount of Arb work for them already but they would additionally like me to fell one of their plantations.

The felling is part of a landscape report and plan that is required to achieve certain planning requirements for a new building elsewhere on the site.

It’s rather ridiculous and for a variety of reasons that are not flexible but the larch is to be felled , then replanted with ... Larch.

Access is very good and the felling easy. I will attach a couple of pictures but my main point is where is the best value on the product to be had ..?

The trees are around 60ft tall and not particularly big at DBH so I’d imagine not much use for milling. I only do small scale firewood processing I’d imagine Larch although it’s good firewood to have a low ish value. ( no one in this region sells softwood logs)

I’m thinking Biomass maybe it’s best value.

Post felling the area will be forestry mulched before being replanted.

Some of you guys specialise in small

Scale forestry so I thought you may have some advice to share.

The spec is a planning condition and therefore not flexible so just advice on the end material please.

    Thanks in advance IMG_0733.jpg

  11. There is a woodland near where I live that got sold off in plots.

I was there a couple of years ago, full of bloody wigwams and shit like that.

    Awful.

That comment made me chuckle. Reminded me of the 90s when my cousin became a New Age traveller and went to live on the Isle of Wight in an old ambulance or something like that. I can clearly remember how pissed off my uncle was at the time [emoji23]
  12. If it looked a bit battered that might have been our trailer!! It went in for a power pack a while ago but we haven't got round to picking it up yet which is in our favour as our yard it full at the moment!! To be fair Steve has always been really good with us but at the moment he's pretty much running the whole place on his own. I think he's had a run of bad luck with staffing problems. If you're definitely interested its worth persisting or try to arrange a meeting with Steve - i'm happy to answer any questions I can and I'd be happy to meet with you sometime to take a look at ours - what sort of work do you do?

My work is all Arb. What is the machine capable of lifting ?
The one that was in there looked pretty tidy to be fair. I asked if it was for sale but the guy I spoke to didn’t know.
How much did you pay for yours. ?
    Cheers
  13. Hello mate - yup, all from Riko. Bought around 6 years ago and it's been a great bit of kit

We've recently had a power pack fitted so we can use the timber crane without plugging it into the Alpine tractor

I was in there 2 weeks ago dropping off a machine to Danequip.
Saw a trailer like yours in their yard so popped in to get details. The guy I spoke to didn’t have a clue about the trailer and the guys in the office were far too busy with eating microwave meals to be able to help. I left my contact details and have never heard a thing back on my enquiry. Totally useless in terms of service and sales.
How much did you pay. ?

    Cheers.
  14. Afternoon

We've not done a great deal of felling work so far this season so I'm looking for cordwood I can process into firewood at home to replenish stocks!!

We have a small forestry trailer/timber grab so I can collect by the trailer load (trailer is 3m long)

Interested to hear if anyone has any road road timber available? I'm in Hampshire (near Hook) but we're near to Berkshire and Surrey county boundaries

    Many thanks - Tim

Is that a Riko trailer ? I’m looking for something just like that.
