  1. 600kg?! Definitely won't be getting a double cab. The single cab tippers I have seen spec a 1137kg payload they have a steel "highway maintenance" type bed. I am wondering about looking into an ally bed with some other type of material for the sides, not sure what yet. From what I have seen on spec sheets you can save 100-160kg on payload by getting an ally bed with ally short sides and I may look at something like ThermHex for the side panels above the normal tipper side height which is a polypropylene honeycomb board for truck bodies, caravans, ships etc. Prices aren't bad (under £200 for all the sides), it's strong and only weighs 80kg per cubic meter so all the sides would come in at maybe around 60kg

If the sticker is to be believed ..
But even as a single cab when modified you will not be as per the factory spec. I assume you would want a tool locker behind the cab ? Don’t forget passengers and tools are going to reduce that factory spec payload by say 150 to 200 kilos ..... so straight away you are under a tonne of available load left. Add a tool locker. That’s another 150 kilos maybe ... say you have 800 kg load left. That’s only half full at best in chip stating legit...

  2. If you fit load sensors you will most likely be telling yourself that everyday your vans are overweight. 3.5t tippers have a very small legal payload. The sticker in my transit double cab states 600kg payload left on the back with the driver in the cab. That ain’t a lot of Woodchip... stick another guy in the cab and load it with tools and it’s even lower again.

sticking to the correct weight limits would really impact on your viability and how you have to price and time factor a lot of jobs.
If a van looks overweight it’s far more likely to be pulled over. It’s very cheap to get up rated springs and barns doors fabricated. Less than the cost of load sensors. If you look legit you’ll be left alone. Ie lights all working , seatbelts on at all times etc.
I’m really not condoning driving overweight in anyway shape or form but pretty much every tree surgery 3.5t vehicle is overweight every day, save for days being full with hedge trimming etc

If you want be totally legit I would pursue options that keep you legal and commercially profitable. Trailers- my latest tipper trailer has a payload of 2.7t. It’s on gas struts and tows a dream when full.
Look at 7.5t vehicles. They are a fraction of the cost of a 3.5t and you won’t worry about payload. Small enough to get on pretty much most sites still. Even if your driver needs a licence it’s cheaper to sort that than load sensors and most jobs you won’t have to run loads of chip to empty during the day
Far less hassle than expensive sensors and multiple trips to tip from site

I totally understand and admire your approach to stay within the rules but I think you might be setting yourself up for disappointment and future frustrations. You have probably considered my suggestions anyway but if you haven’t do give them some consideration

    All the best.

  3. Not wankerstar..  he’s the best paid person for talking stuff he’s got no clue about..  I,m saying he’s paid to review, and he’s rubbish at it....[emoji848]

btw I liked him at first till I out grew his  Knowledge and realised there were lots more qualified people to talk about stuff that he was trying to review.

edit and those poeple didn’t get paid for the review [emoji109][emoji109][emoji106][emoji106][emoji6][emoji6]

His channel was good about 10 years ago. Since it went commercial it got really sh1t. Totally sold himself out. Hey it’s his income so hard to blame him but it’s a shame. The early days on his channel were nice viewing.

  4. I have a job where I think it would be useful.
How many are out there in the UK and willing to work in the East Midlands. I see them all the time on facebook but then can't find them when I want to..

Take a look at the today’s job thread. I used blue sky tree care’s grapple truck. On Thursday this week. Have chat to Julian. Drop me a PM if you want his mobile number. Very good bloke.
I was very happy with the days work and fair price. Will use him again for sure.

I’ve also used Al Wallace. Also a very decent guy.

  5. Took down this compromised Beech Tree today. Dismantled and cleared away In 6 hours thanks to my buddies grapple saw truck saving me a load of rigging and hard work. Some nice big pieces kept for milling and making garden furniture for the customer. A good day in the office. Back tomorrow to grind the stump out.
HiCap with us again today [emoji106]IMG_4936.jpgIMG_4939.jpgIMG_4952.jpgIMG_4957.jpgIMG_4948.jpgIMG_4950.jpgIMG_4961.jpg

  7. Sorry this might have been done to death but can't find much in a search.
Might be changing our tracked 230, roughly 5 years old now, had many problems when we first had it, and is in to fix some problems now. It was handled badly the first time round and there's radio silence from them so far this time I wanted to talk to them.
I've had tw's since they were entecs but
Its put me off tw to be honest so looking at other brands.
In fairness the 230 chips well and punches above its 6inch capacity, so I think I'd have to look at 8 inch machines to not feel ive taken a step back.
Forst is the brand I would go for, but I've started hearing that companies that had moved to forst are going back to tw.
What is the current consensus on these brands at the moment.
Stg5 compliance throws another set of questions, dpf in the larger hp petrol forst at 8 inch vs the 24hp diesel in the 230.
(Weve had a road tow 230 on hire recently and there's a slight difference in performance vs the old 35hp kubota but not enough to get upset about in my mind). So probably the worry is the dpf.
    Thanks all

The new TR8 55 diesel is stage 5.
On the whole I’m pleased with mine. Chips like a beast.

Few little niggles on the newly designed machine but Först have been excellent at resolving any minor bits very well. Nothing to do with the engine either.

Worth a demo. They also gave me nearly double the px value on my outgoing Timberwolf which certainly sweetened the deal up. Keen to get your business they are. ..

I think forst have a 10 inch in the pipeline so hopefully in a couple of years the TR8 will go back in against one of those [emoji4].

  8. No not Donnington  but I have done that . My claim to fame was that I was faster than Ron into the first corner ( Red gate ? )  but slower every where else . Always nervous going down craner !

Is that as you slid past him into the kitty litter [emoji23]

Good times eh. Still safer than green laning on a bike. I tried that idea , inadvertently bought the most powerful 2 stroke going and scared myself stupid on it. Sold that pretty quick before I really hurt myself. Was fun jumping the wood chip piles though. At least they had a soft landing if it went wrong [emoji38]

  9. I don't ride any more ( 68 with bits of metal in me )  but there was a bloke with a John Renalds rep Rizzla
Gixer . He had more dobbins than me  and crept away on the strait but I got him after about 3 laps .

68 - got any black and white track day photos ? [emoji12]

I’m pretty sure I would have the bottle or stupidity of my youth to ride like I used to if I bought another bike. Probably a bloody good thing to.

I remember those well. Friend of a friend had one. Nice bike.
  11. Good era though wasn’t it. The last sports bike I rode was the BMW 1000 rr.
Epic performance but about the same size as my Ninja B1H. Bloody uncomfortable.
The ninja was wonderful on track though. Way to hard sprung on the rd.
I’m starting to hanker after an old zx9r , sports tourer by modern standards but I like em.

  12. Love it . I used to know a bloke like him but he was motorcycles . he was 70 odd . I like the way its understated . I think they call them a " sleeper " car .  You know the thing . Bloke pulls up at the lights in his Porsche , takes off and the sleeper walks away from it .

Aren’t you racing up on this monumental decision Stubby. I’ll buy a few of those ported saws to help your purchase power if you like .....[emoji38]

  13. Some are. I used to run old 4x4 tyres on the front axle of an international loader tractor and had to make sure they were rated for it.

I’ll have to see what’s written on my BFG Tyre’s on the hilux and compare to the transit ones. Would be interesting if they are viable.
    They last forever too

Best thing these 3.5 t tippers could have is a diff lock. That would help this time of year. All to easy to get one side spinning up and the other doing nowt.
  14. What is the most common 3.5t tipper that tree surgeons use? I noticed they all seem to use fords.

Can’t fault my transit. Super reliable , very good torque. Parts are cheap and on the shelf. Mechanics find them easy to work on.
Got to go a long way to beat it. Less sure about the most recent incarnation.

    Iveco is also very good

Up rated rear springs are a must. And a set of barn doors to hide the naughty loads ...

  15. I’m glad you told them no and stuck to what you actually wanted because it’s your hard earned wages and I would of done the same Lux [emoji846] if you are trying to make a name for yourself then the tattoos you do are like advertisements so I can understand his logic however the customer wants what they want.

For sure. I didn’t want to be pushed into a design I wasn’t 100 percent on. The style of work was the same. What should of happened was I should of been passed back to the person responsible for allocating work to artists but the artist didn’t and really didn’t come across well in their emails.

Big shame as the work I’ve seen from there is amazing. I shelved the idea during lockdown and work got really busy so it was just this thread giving me a kick start again.

Now I need to find an equally good studio with better customer relations [emoji38]

  16. My friend and her husband run that place.  They do some great work.  Say hello to Renea from Rich if you go there.

Small world. Sadly my experience with the artist who was deemed best to do my design was pretty negative.
The guys talent is amazing. First class tattoo work. I gave him my brief via email but he decided for me that it was old hat and I should choose his idea. I wasn’t keen on his idea so he said he wouldn’t do my tattoo as it wasn’t his thing. He said he would see if one of their other artists would do the work and that was the last I heard from him.
It was very clear in the email conversation if you weren’t selecting a design he personally liked he wouldn’t do it.
    Not good service.
The reason I selected their studio was a friends son had a sleeve done and I was amazed by the quality of work. Their studio isn’t local and I was happy to spend about £1500 as a budget so I was very disappointed with being brushed off as the artist didn’t like the design.

Hey I don’t like what some customers as me to do to their trees but I always carry out their work to the same standards .....

  17. Post a picture when you get it done Lux if you do not mind sharing [emoji846] there are some hugely talented tattooists out there highly skilled. And I should imagine you will have the cream of the crop in London to choose from [emoji1419]

London’s a bit of a schlep but worth the trip to find the better studios / artists. Keeping up with work is consuming all the time of late but yes will do. [emoji106]

  18. I looked into their company and it does look great Will. I found a wee lad on the Island called Ben and he takes some courses so it would save my travelling fees and accommodation. However these courses will not run unless enough people are interested so it’s a case of weighing up which to go for. I would prefer to get the main tickets immediately and start my new life. Unfortunately I need to save firstly for my own PPE and then the courses themselves. I will get there because it’s something definitely want [emoji846] Thankyou for your advice [emoji1303]

In your circumstances the 10 week course at merrist wood would be a much better option. It’s about 3 grand you will get a balance of theory and practical that I’d imagine will give you a better foot on the ladder that just 4 weeks practical.

  19. I agree the work could of been better but I do like the image [emoji846]

I’ve been looking into a tattoo of late. I found a studio called old London road or something similar in Kingston , some of the work was hugely skilled. I’ll chase it all up again soon but I’m imagining there will be quite Some back log from Covid
