  1. I'm finding this thread quite interesting and informative. However it still occurs to me that Confuscus was right when he said "better for tree to fail before arborist does work than after". Can be quite difficult at times to know what is best to do.
  2. Regarding what you call the water shoots are you referring to the epicormic shoots coming off the trunk, or the regrowth on a previously shortened branch on the right side, about a third of the way up the crown, or the much lower limb above the fence? In my area of of the tree officers is great, and says removal of epicormic shoots that can be removed with a handsaw does not need permission. Anything other than this, unless totally dead would need permission. The only exemption is if it is to meet statutory clearance over pavement/footpath or highway. A tree officer from a different local council is nothing like as flexible and has previously told me I need to apply for permission to remove any epicormic shoots.
  3. Morning all, Dry and foggy here. Doing a quote this morning then some pottering.
  4. Morning all, Going for a dog walk this morning, then maybe start getting kit sorted for Loler.
  5. Maybe not quite the answer OP had in mind, but it certainly made me laugh when one of my friends send it to me.
  6. You can’t call it huge unless you had to get the drain rods out, or had to get Dynorod involved. No, photographic proof not required 💩🙈
  7. Morning all, Days getting even longer now😀
  8. Happy Christmas everyone Our middle one is 35 today
  9. Morning all, Sorry to hear about the yard theft Doug. Some real scum bags out there. On a brighter note, have a good Christmas everyone, and hopefully 2025 can be a better year for the world.
  10. Morning all, Been given my kitchen duties for today by the boss. I find the trouble with making cheese sauce is I have to keep testing it frequently. Mind you, I even test the cauliflower when it is raw. Keeps the M1 southbound moving!
  11. Morning all, Blue sky alternating with sleet and snow here. Crazy but true.
  12. Morning all, Shortest day today, more daylight soon.
  13. Hopefully to a paying customer, rather than a giveaway? I manage to sell all of my deciduous chip, even it it waits in the yard for months.
  14. Nothing on the horizon for the other knee, though I agree about mostly in pairs. Mine was due to an old fashioned cartilage removal aged 13, before arthroscopy existed. This cured the problem of a torn cartilage with a congenital cyst in it, but the price being premature osteoarthritis that started years ago.
  15. Morning all, Saw physio yesterday and he was really please with progress. I was amazed to say the least when he said I can gradually start work, even a bit of gentle climbing. Need to avoid putting significant rotation through new knee, long term. I shall take it very carefully and it will be a while before doing a full day. Best early Christmas present I could ask for. Those painful exercises are worthwhile. Happy Christmas all.
  16. Makes me wonder if there will be a role for rebuliding/reconditioning the older chippers.
  17. Morning all, Not been out yet but it chucked it down most of the night. Heating on and stay inside methinks.
  18. Morning all, Blowy here too. Be good if it dislodged a large hung up pine I quoted for yesterday. Spiral crack at the base, wood building close by. Stay safe.
  19. Morning all, Dry and 9 degrees here. Off to look at a job then into the shed to change some chipper blades. Goodbye cabin fever. Stay safe all.
  20. Morning all, Dry day here and more walking to do. Only 9 days until I can go back on the road now😀. Be good, have fun.
  21. Morning all, Mild and dry here, ideal for a bit more walking. Not preaching at all Doug. Hope the memory settles down soon for you. We need reminding about the nature of our work, so we don't get complacent. I love it when customers realise how much they have underestimated disposal of arisings.
  22. I used to pull them out by hand without gloves in fact, and only stopped doing this when my wife said my hands were too rough.
  23. Morning all, Nice and dry here, on second big mug of coffee, freshly ground. Is anyone else familiar with gardeners being know as scratchers by tree surgeons? I assume it is because a lot of them just scratch the surface of things and when the wheelie bin is full give up. Not all of them of course, but it does seem that way sometimes. Have a good weekend.
  24. Heavy duty flail, followed by glyphosate when the tender new shoots appear in Spring. Or pigs as previously suggested. But loppers is only for a serious masochist, surely. May as well try nail scissors.
