  1. Kevin, thank you for the response, you are correct about the carving not being able to compare to the real think, i had a Golden Retriever commission to be carved from a 14 year old picture. When they came to collect the finished carving i could see on there faces that it wasnt their dog...... i didnt let them have it, it sold the next day as a Golden Retriever carving Thanks for your advice on calling the carving a German Sheperd i think thats the way to go when they come to see it tomorrow. I have said to them that there is no obligation to buy it unless they are totally happy with how it looks. Much appreciated. Ian
  2. One of my carvings from this week, customer wanted a head and neck of their Alsatian, Black and Tan, which passed away recently, carved from a picture so i hope they like it...
  3. They are reflecting a certain style there Si
  4. Thank you Steve, very much appreciated
  5. So the rumour has it Many thanks
  6. If that's your first attempt then well done ....... go back to your first tree and finish it off in the same way you did your second tree, when you do your third you will see even more improvement. I guarantee they will sell as they are.
  7. I don't have a power file Si, I have a diamond stone I will try tomorrow and see if I can put the bar right. I have a fresh chain to go on then and yes I do file the heels by a couple of mm. Thanks for the help Si
  8. Thanks for the information Ian, i will have a go at dressing the bar and get a new loop of chain and see what happens. i have a diamond stone now from a friend of mine.
  9. Can someone please help me by explaining why i have this damage to the tip of my bar sugi 12 ins running on a echo cs 281 1/4 pitch chain. i have been carving with it all week, sharpening as required, came to do some maintenance and cleaning etc today and spotted the damage to both the bar top and below the tip aswell as chain links on the underside. Has the chain been running toooo slack or is it something else. I thought i looked after my equipment until i saw this Any help would be appreciated (rob d ) i have been watching Simons video on bar maintenance and i think its becoming clear now.
  10. Indeed why, I have a ms 150 and ever use it over my echo cs 281 Wes with a 14 ins QTip bar
  11. ewe should spend your time carving instead of generating wooley phrases about my posts

  13. ok, i will give you that one, ewe managed to get two in there
  14. Hahahahahahaha i wasnt expecting that one ....... Cheers
  15. Thank you, i appreciate it ........ and the joke is one of many im sure
  16. I have been working on this commission over the last few days, i was asked to carve six sheep and a lamb from a length of Ash in the original commission but i could only achieve five sheep but did manage to get 4 lambs instead from the length of Ash available. No sheep jokes please........
  17. Use the saw as much as you can, looking at your pics they are too square and horizontal, separate the claw from the talon, smooth the claw with your finger sander, and put a hole under the claw x 3 on each talon to define its shape. We are into detail here, if you want that for your carves......
  18. I spend time on the main features of an owl, the face, the feathers and the feet, your picture shows the feet unfinished I would imagine, the crest you have done a good job on, the eyes are deep in the face which gives the character to the carving, the feathers are good but the tail feathers need finishing at the same time as the talons, make the talons a feature. That's my opinion and no offence meant
  19. My advice is to not try and reach for the power tools too early, work at it and use the chainsaw as much as you can before turning to the power tools, your skill with the saw will improve if you do this. However , i had a proton on 2 occassions and they both burnt out, most probably my own fault by expecting too much of them. I bought the makita die grinder which is an excellent tool if used with sabaturr bits. I also use the makita finger sander which is superb for the detail and gives you good access without restricting you too much. Thats my advice to your question for what its worth, practice practice practice with that chainsaw:biggrin:
