  9. Don't try to make friends. Be friendly, but remember that you're there to do a job. It's easy to think things are great if everyone immediately likes you, but it's more important to earn respect. Keep instructions clear and simple. I don't know what your crew are like, but if they're any good they should know what to do anyway. Oh, and telling experienced ground-crew how to do something (rather than what to do) never goes down well.
  10. Like most things, there are pros and cons to both. If the stake goes in first, you risk loosening it when you plant the tree. If you plant first, you can damage the roots while driving the stake. Both of these are bad things. In theory, stake first, but in practice it's sometimes easier to stake after (I don't agree that if the stake can go in, the tree can too). My advice: suck and see. As long as the tree is properly planted and the stake is firm, do whatever works best (and quickest). But you'll never hit 200-250 a day if you spend too much time thinking about it.
  11. Now you're asking. 2m x 2m should be about right, any wider and you'll encourage more lateral branches. If you plant closer it will encourage the trees to grow straighter and thinner, and you're likely to need to thin them at some point through their rotation. At a 1m x 1m spacing this could be a pain. How long before final felling is a more open-ended question and it depends on what you want. You could coppice for biomass in 5 years or leave the birch for 50 to produce high quality timber. For firewood and for a relatively small area, one option is selective thinning from whenever they get to a size that best fits your firewood processor (10-15 years). Or you could fell them all at 20 years and wait another 20 until they all grew back. It really is down to your objectives, resources and patience.
  12. Assuming the streams don't flood the area, alder and birch. Relatively quick to grow and decent firewood. Not so long ago I would have said ash (ah, but it seems so long ago now...).

  15. 10 Bears - Harsh, but fair. Having said that, we don't know how many trees there are, whether there was a deer population assessment done before planting, if Corco had any professional advice. You're right though, it shouldn't be too late.
  16. What percentage of the crop does 500-700 represent? And is the birch, alder and hazel the main crop? If you originally put in 50,000 trees then that's not so bad! If the trees are a nursery or edging species and don't need to be perfect specimens, again the problem might not as serious as you think. Anything less than 15-20% failure and just replace them. More than that and you need to actively do something. Control the deer numbers and put guards on the trees.
  17. This conversation is developing a theme and I agree. Re-pollarding looks like the best option. "Fell and replace" should be for a reason, not just an easy way out (not that I'm suggesting anything Couldyajust). But the client does need to know what a pollard will look like and potential work needed in future. That might not suit them.
