  1. Are there any papers or technical studies around about this, I have a team who are good but getting long in the tooth and at some point they will need to be replaced, but you only need to attend a woodfair with a climbing competition to know that age is no barrier! Just curios to see if any studies have been made...
  2. all the probes I've seen/used are rubbish - they bend for fun!! As a birder I prefer decent binoculars but a Monocular is as good usually and cheaper. PTI Course I did we had access to kit and shared with others...
  3. Look like Greater Horseshoe, smart!
  4. Cheers gentlemen - food for thought (liking that Husky...)
  5. Cheers Rob! Anyone else?
  6. Daughters husband wants a small saw for chopping up logs 3/4 times a year for his log burner, He has noted this on ebay a McCulloch CS360 T any opinions and what would he be better off with if not? He's pretty hand with the mechanics (he fixes hydraulic problems on large plant) so no problems with anything tricky/tempremental, but he may be a bit 'timid' And no he's not borrowing my Stihl and ballistics

    Gibson ES335 .

Great guitar, good for blues and jazz, T Bone Walker was a famous user. Rock wise Clapton used one in Cream, can be prone to feedback (like most semi's ) at high volumes but in general good piece of kit!

    Gibson ES335 .

Jimmy Page model is a Gibson Les Paul - never seen him with a 335...

    Bats

All British bats have full protection, as a bat Worker for a number of years I can tell you how common they are in relation to the 80's let alone the 70's. Bats UK are all insectivorous and are a good indicator species of environmental trends and problems, think about this - how many insects do you get on a long journey splattered on your car bike - a lot less than 10 years ago I bet. The major pressure now is habitat loss in relation to development.
  10. no scam involved, they are Schedule 1 Protected species under Law and need protection. The legislation side has been mismanaged for years and a decent Ecologist can sort this out very quickly, given the right permissions and licences in the correct time frame. Newt fencing is in use, I think it is rarely placed right and costs more than building a pond in mitigation - ridiculousness!!
  11. getting late in the season, but the DNA test is the most costly and, in my opinion, unreliable. Needed torching for adults and bottle trapping - any liscensed half decent ecologist should be able to sort you... Where are you based?
  12. SKSTRees - Wall Lizard and a Moorish Gecko (bred those!)
  13. Unfortunately it only becomes 'valued' when you mention the Duty of Care and the legislation regarding accidents and having a defend-able regime of inspection and setting a priority based programme of works. Although I do feel that even this will become redundant, even though at the minute it is a statutory obligation...
  14. some good points made Chris, I know how stressful working for yourself can be, I have had many situations where work has crossed over into home life - can I be the only one who carries a copy of BS5837 on his IPhone?!! I wouldn't discourage anyone from doing the work - I came into it from the Ecology side and from Teaching ARB and I am very passionate about what I do. But don't underestimate the pressures and frustrations - maybe I'm just a cynical old b%£~er!
  15. my name is Anthony and i am a tree officer - advice? dont do it! As a Local Authority staff member we have taken cuts in 5 successive years, this year after loosing 17 frontline members of staff we have just recieved the news that we need to save another 34 Million. We haven't got the resources to do anything already and the public hate us on Social Media because we changed the grass cutting regime recently. If you like hard work and sleepless nights - crack on.
  16. coming from the other side of the fence my usual advice to planning will contain the following: Further conditions would be: - That all work is undertaken to BS3998 - That the consent shall be valid for a period of two years from the date of this notice. We would recommend that all works are carried out by a qualified tree surgeon and that any pruning works comply with current bird nesting legislation. Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 Part 1 Section 1 (1) Consult W&C Act 1981 (with amendments) for full details of protection afforded to wild birds.
  17. Talking about differences between NVQ /National Certificate and RFS also delivered Countryside Management. The distinction is usually how much is assumed and drip fed, as opposed to a rational thought process - who can solve and rationalise quite complex scenarios and problems.
  18. in my experience Level 2 is fell that tree safely, level 3 is why did you fell, and show your RAMS and how will you dispose of the arisings?
  19. As somebody who deals with this day in and out I would knock back the app and ask for further detail to include all specifications. The current guidance is not to give percentages (which are ambiguous at best) but to provide measurement from lateral branches – ie how short from the crown it is intended to cut. We can also ask for cut diameter in relation to branches/extension growth pruning.
  20. Usual method, hit the books - Collins photo guide,Roger Phillips,Guy Watsons Arb Fungi book and the Arbtalk app!
  21. Great,we had diagnosed that but thanks for confirmation!
  22. Found on a mature Sugar Maple with some dubious past management... any ideas?
  23. Do a search for a local free-lance Ecologist, the good ones welcome an extra pair of hands, especially with climbing experience. You need to be out there doing it,I am out 2/3 times a week, dawn and dusk in the season but around the Cheshire/North West area, hope you get sorted and definitely encourage you to keep trying!
  24. Treevolution Forestry & Arboricultural Consultancy Very thorough, and quick report writing, based in Beddgelert.
  25. we use Treevolution at Halton BC...
