  2. Just bought it last week. Its an old one from 2000 though. The mix was good, with new petrol. If i it was broken when I bought it I can send it back and use the momey towards a new one. The seller is probably goong to blame my fuel.
  3. Thats great! Got a 9010 from ebay, after 2 tanks of fuel it cut out and wont start. It doesn't feel nice to pull, i'm guessing engine damage

  5. I had this on my 2004 td5. Turned out the fuel pressure regulator was slowly leaking diesel onto the starter motor. The diesel evaporated and left a sticky gunk inside the motor, stopping it turning. I sprayed a load of brake cleaner all over it and rinsed it out with a hose. THis was over a year ago, it hasn't given me any trouble since. let me know if that helps, it's worth a try and doesn't cost anything…..
  6. Here is my interpretation, based on the cs38 I did last month with Roland Heming (http://www.rolandheming.co.uk) who provided all the gear. The code and prices are from the honey brothers website (Arborist Equipment - Tree Surgeon Supplies - Climbing Accessories - Honey Brothers Ltd) Work position strop: wire core flip line with a Prussik or mechanical friction device. Hb050 £84 Climbing irons: spikes. Try to borrow these, as only 2 will be climbing at a time. Bash12-1 £182.75 Spare rescue: rescue connector?? We used 2 caribiners connected with a short sling. Edl 025 £3.50 + ct001 £14.58 (x2) False anchor : a sling and a caribiner to girth hitch on the climbing pole. Dmm151 £4.50 + ct001 £14.58 Hope that helps Matt
  7. I recently did cs 38 and 39 with Roland Heming (http://www.rolandheming.co.uk) in Dorset. They can provide all the kit, and the prices are really fair. Even with accommodation and travelling there it worked out cheaper for me than loads of the other trainers. The accommodation isn't too shabby either...
  8. I'm looking for part-time tree/ground work in West Devon/ North Cornwall, but I am happy to travel further afield for a few days work. I have cs 30, 31 Chainsaw Operator, and 38 Tree access/Aerial Rescue. Trees have always been an interest of mine, I am keen to learn, work hard, and pick up new skills quickly. I am Self-Employed, have Professional Liability and Indemnity insurance, and some personal kit (saw, helmet, gloves, trousers etc), plus clean driving license and transport. I attached my CV to this post. I can also help out with taking photos or videos, website design/update and graphic work - I made the Roland Heming ad that comes up on here- Please bear me in mind if you could ever use an extra pair of hands!   11. You could do worse than the Flinn saws. I have the 36". I like the teeth more than the peg tooth ones. matt
  12. I'm not too bad with mechanics (drive a landrover), and can swap parts ok. What worries me is cleaning the bore out, I have read about using acid, I think thats a bit of a push for me. Getting it fixed here will cost minimum 200. On the other hand I can't afford to buy another saw.
  13. Just to add another perspective to this thread; I saved hard and bought a used 550xp on ebay. I've used it a couple of times, and now I find out that the piston is scored, I can't use it any more, and repairs could cost more than I payed for it. Apparently this is most often caused by a bad fuel mix, but I've been careful with the fuel, so it looks like the damage was already done when I bought it. It does start and run, so it's quite possible that the seller had no idea of the fault. I've asked the seller to pay some of the repair costs, does that seem reasonable to you guys?

  15. ouch. Thanks for helping, I really didn't want to hear that! I hope it can be saved, I bought it on Ebay because the budget is tight at the moment. I've been mixing the fuel carefully, its only done about 5 litres since I've had it. Could it have been like this for a while?
  16. Thats bad news. What causes the scoring? Can I still use it next week for my 5 day chainsaw course, or is the damage likely to become terminal?
  17. it was harder than I thought it was going to be, but I managed to get some photos of the piston in various positions: Does that look like scoring on the piston, or is some wear normal? How big (expensive) a job is getting the piston replaced? thanks matt

  23. I bought a 2011 550xp from ebay last week. It started and ran fine for 6 or 7 tanks, but today I noticed something odd. When pulling the cord it was turning over, but it felt like there was very little compression (I hadn't used the decompressor button, and it wasn't engaged). After tugging away for a while I felt the compression return, and it started up. The rest of the day I had no problem getting it going. So my question is; what can cause loss of compression loss when the saw is cold, but fixes itself after some pulling and when the saw is warm? I'm new to chainsaws, and would really appreciate some advice! Thanks Matt
