  1. how come? is that a law?

not being funny mate, just never heard of it before

    ian

Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk

Its not illegal to sell it but is illegal to sell treated timber to burn as it is teated with chromated copper arsenate As the name suggests it is a mixture of chromium, copper and arsenic, it imparts a greenish tint to the timber.

But when burnt toxic arsenic is released into the atmosphere and the ash from burnt CCA treated timber can contain up to 10 per cent (by weight) arsenic, chromium and copper.

so maybe give scaffold planks a miss

  3. 75% of 200ton = 150t of windblown timber, good dry windblow will weigh about 20ton a load thats 7 1/2 artic loads , no seasoning for 12 month , hardly any bark to tidy up,

simply log it up and wait until end of feb and just see what people will pay for 'rubbish'

  4. That new holland looks ok.

Thing with Valtra/valmet is they have the forest ground clearance. Their forestry pedigree also means they hold their value very very well. Hence the 8150 with 10,400 hours on Arbtrader for 18k.

i thought of the tm classic as it doesnt have the electric gizmos, which will go wrong with age

but i would have to admit the valmet is built different and are better suited to forestry

we also have a new holland tvt 155 which was originaly built by styer in austria for new holland and the build is very similar to valtra , if you look underneath theres a 3/4 length skid of 1" steel , no pipes/ wires to catch ,

  5. What bothers me is that farmers/landowners will strip out every tree for biomass cash.....

Not just from woods but also from verges, field edges , odd corners etc

Every tree will have a price on its head....

Doubtful , as the entry level stewardship subsidy is payed on a points basis , trees are worth points,

a tree growing in the middle of a field is worth more than one in a hedge and so on

if you dont have plenty points you can let trees grow on, have a look at the road side hedges and you can often see sapplings left to grow

,on what would otherwise be a table top hedge

  6. Inspired by an earlier thread regarding the future of firewood sales in the UK, I wonder if there is a tendency here for firewood merchants to dwell only on Winter to Winter sales; hoping that they have enough firewood to meet their local supply demand for the incoming winter?

I would be interested in the views of suppliers/wholesalers who look forward, say 5 years or more, to having enough split firewood, either seasoned or kiln dried, to be able to remain in the market.

My own view is that governments will eventually bring in enough legislation (probably forced by Brussels), to exclude most of the contributers to this website!

My belief is:- We are a sideline to these government issues which seem to somehow enforce legislation upon us. We will only last so long before conglamorates dictate how we operate. Yes, I feel our days are numbered and so we should appreciate what we have at the moment.

Is it time that we should "look after ourselves for 'at least' the next five years?

    Food for thought.

    Stephen

Grow and Harvest whilst you can. I am:blushing:

Just out of interest, how long have you been doing it for?
