Nice modification work. I didn't realise it would be quite so easy to put the head on and off to be honest, so that's something to think about with set ups๐ค I'm thinking that I could have the mill on the trailer, with a sherpa(next machine purchase, I swear๐ ๐ ) next to it. Obviously nowhere near the lifting power of a full size loader, but a lot better than using cant hooks etc! And very manoeuvrable if a customer asks for the timber in a shed or something ๐If the job needed it I'd just make 2 trips and take my loader on a plant trailer, it's too big for anything else.

Bloody hell you've not wasted any time setting that up!!๐๐๐ Looks good on that trailer, is there room to get the sherpa on next to the mill?

Buying a splitter from marketplace without seeing it?

Looking at there other items for sale seems OK to me- no diggers for sale that say they're in Birmingham but are clearly in Turkey!- but you can never say for sure obviously. -
Buying a splitter from marketplace without seeing it?

Very Nice, I'm looking to buy one of those or a posch equivalent later this year, I saw that ad a week or so ago๐ There's another one on market place for 5grand if you haven't seen it. But there's no way I'd send 7k without going to see it. Sort out a time, arrange a mutually agreed payment method before (there's these great little pieces of folding paper for just this sort of thing๐ ๐), take a trailer and away you go๐๐ By actually being there and ready to take it away you might manage to knock 500 quid off, that's the collection paid for, lovely jubbly. Good luck with it. -
We've got a forklift, slings, pull winches etc so no problems there๐ Between me and my mate that ill build it with we have 10 impact wrenches, which is possibly a sign of some kind of illness๐ ๐ ๐ but means lots of bolts doesn't worry us๐ I'm looking forward to it, saved a pallets worth of sycamore about 1.5meters long from the log pile this afternoon for practicing on. At best they'll make some nice little boards, at worst I won't have messed up some decent wood learning the very basics๐๐

I've got a 21 plate ranger and all I can say is I'm very glad it's only leased!! It'll either be a discovery 4, 2.4 h/d utility 110 or a 316sprinter when the ranger goes back. Better the devil you know I reckon now... Unless one of the manufacturers brings out something that's really different to the current crop of pick ups of course, but I can't see that happening!

A mate of mine has had the kohler ch740 engine go bang big time on his predator 460 hybrid. The kohler engine is a 455 day lead time from our normal supplier (unipower dunmow), if anyone has any suggestions for suppliers please let me know! Or has one lying around ๐ Alternatively, has anyone fitted a different engine to one of these machines? Thanks.

It's arrived! Going to be 3 or 4 weeks before we get it into the workshop to build it, but it's not something that can be rushed/fitted in to an evening. I've got to resist the temptation to open bits just for a look... Luckily the manual came separately so I can look through that at least. ๐๐

No no, just your idea๐ ๐ ๐

I was talking to my mate on a job today, turns out the area that needs welding in picture 4 wasn't caused by age but by him catching the corner on a post 10 years ago๐ ๐ ๐ ๐คฆ๐คฆ Luckily he's now my 'Cheif Engineer '...๐

I didn't yesterday as I forgot to put any in the truck, but I plan to put a cable tie or bit of string on mine, just incase they come loose. To be fair, the trailer was pretty bouncy and they hadn't moved at all ๐
-
The other thing I have is a couple of breakaway cables taped up in the door pockets of each tow vehicle.....๐ I tend to buy a handful from a tool stall at a Land Rover show every year!
-
These are the ones I have, I paid 65 for them at a machinery show. Today was actually the first time I've used them, very simple to use- turn them on, stick them on and plug in the transmitter to the trailer socket. I often tow long distances very early in the morning or late at night with a variety of trailers, so they seemed like a sensible thing to have in the truck!

Cant belive I haven't mentioned this before! My 80 quid aldi petrol pressure washer! I've had it about 6 years now and apart from having to put some decent oil in it it's untouched and trouble free๐ I had a slightly longer, better quality hose put on it which has made it nicer to use. I wish I'd bought 2 to be honest..

Well as I have posted on another thread,I have ordered the fronteir OS31, spares, extension and winch/ramps. I still plan to mount it on an rsj frame but now I want to store it/transport it on its own trailer. I'll them park that sat level so that so if I want to just mill the odd log I can. Or I can obviously tow it to the wood pile or jobs. I got very lucky and was able to collect this today- its my old triple axle, 14x6 that I sold to a local scout group for a couple of hundred quid a few years ago. I asked their leader if I could buy it back as its just been sat for 5 years in their field. They said I could just take it๐๐ I've stripped the all the rotten wood off and given the chassis a good pressure wash. It's remarkably solid given that it's at least 30 years old, needs 1 bracket welding in in the back left corner and that's it. It really is quite impressive and there's a hell of a lot of steel in the frame! Obviously it's going to need some money spending on it, tyres, brakes etc but even if it costs me ยฃ750ish I'm still well ahead of if I'd bought a complete unknown at auction etc. I measured where the mill will stick out to and screwed a piece of timber out that far to see if I can make the turn into my field- I can, but it's tight! As to be expected it needs rewiring so I was able to test my wireless trailer lights, they seem OK for the cost๐ I plan to rewire it and fit new lights. I'll also put a female 7 pin socket on the back so I can put wireless lights/a light board on the back of the mill itself(although legally as its under 3 meters of overhang- 2.1m- I only need a 'marker', I'd rather give the back of my mill proper road lights). A good piece of the puzzle to have in place๐๐

Brilliant, will do!
-
Yeah it's not really a big investment for the potential returns given the price of timber.๐
-
Mine should be here sometime this week, which is less than ideal to be honest due to what I'm doing at work but you can't knock it for speed really ๐
-
With the winch, ramps, extension, auto luber, spares, box of blades and delivery it's about 4800 plus the vat. Like all these things they start to add up when you add options but I think it's quite a lot for the money.
-
I have finally taken the plunge and ordered a Frontier OS31, spares, blades, extension, winch and ramps!! Should be here next week, but it'll be a couple of weeks before I get it built up unfortunately. After my post a few weeks ago about transporting it on an ifor Williams I am going to go ahead with that idea of mounting it on an rsj frame that gets forked on and off a trailer. Although I am going to look for a cheap, rough but solid flatbed to semi permanently mount the whole set up on, and leave it set level, so I can quickly mill up the odd bit here and there as it comes in. Then take it to the main pile of timber when needed. My current main concern is sourcing logs to mill! So if any tree surgeons in the Hertford area have anything suitable, or foresters that can deliver on 8 wheelers or smaller, get in touch!๐๐๐ But overall, I'm really looking forward to getting stuck into it ๐๐

Some lovely tools on this post๐๐ My go to knife for years has been a mora clipper/companion or the bahco wrecking knife/chisel (we call them 'chifes' at work). But these days my most used knife by a country mile is a makita folding Stanley, it lives in my pocket basically all the time๐ My nicest knife is probably a folding gerber, chunky rubber grips, a gutting hook(never used but gives the tip end a nice chunky shape) and a lovely edge- I have a 4 inch , 15 year old scar to prove it!!! I can't see me ever buying a really decent fixed blade, I just don't do enough fine knife work to justify it.

Brilliant ๐๐ If I ever build myself a house I know what one of my first design features will be now๐๐

I've been having a good clear up recently, and I've found 28 various chains! From 12 to 25 inch, all in need of sharpening, a lot of them from a bad state from stump removals etc. There's no way I'm Sharpening that lot by hand, but with the price of everything these days it's going to be well worth me getting them all done, especially as it will be 1 trip to drop them all off, not a couple at a time. It'll then be up to me to be disciplined and sharpen the chain that's on the saw until its completely dead. ๐ That way I'll have pretty much a lifetime supply ๐ But day to day there's not really an alternative to just sharpening as you go๐คทโโ๏ธ
