  1. Well, unless the entire population is horribly sick and injured, you have health. Unless the entire population is grievously endangered everywhere they tread, you have safety. 'coures, it has been known for 'health and safety' to be confused with petty bureaucracy. Is possible that it is petty bureaucracy that Mull is missing, rather than safety..... or health?
  2. Wot I wrote (This was an opinion -IMO means In My Opinion) Not wot I wrote
  3. Why would you choose to work without a permit when you know one is 'required'. Haven't you read how many fingers end up in the food during maintenance
  4. The UK?s Leading Professional Body for Forestry and Arboriculture Them's dead clever, and pretty posh. Apparently.
  5. Ahhhh... He who pays the piper and all that......
  6. Don't let the age put you off - that is the current state of the art. If you want to make karabiners safer, I think we may need to go in the other direction. Now, where's them old screwgates...
  7. Put in arb terms NEBOSH is a bit like NPTC (Awarding organisation) IOSH is a bit like the 'institute of chartered foresters' (Professional organisation).
  8. I Always had you down as working for you own organization. Strange, but true - although I think it not because us oldies are sloppy ... It more a case that we are used to accidents happening to other people (you know.... Youngsters).
  9. Bedtime reading? http://www.hse.gov.uk/research/hsl_pdf/2003/hsl03-18.pdf A treat from the HSL to get you started.
  10. Bad eggs in every industry.... Strive to avoid them - they are not health and safety pros in my book.
  11. what a difference 9 hours makes....... Smmmmmmmmmmmoooooothe
  12. Not so sure... It is possible that the people in charge of the site are just not unknowable in all aspects the task they oversee. (Back to the old favorite 'competence' again). I am not sure what 'legislate to the thickest man on site' means, but I'm afraid that your RAMS will make no difference to the thickest man on site, or any man probably, because I doubt anyone will ever see them, let alone read them. They will most probably simply be stuck in a file somewhere. Why do people ask for them? Because some businesses find it easier to tell an un-knowledgeable manager to simply ask for everything they can think of, than would be to get a specialist in to work out exactly what the information is that they actually need.
  13. A highly trained, qualified, competent and well equipped tree surveyor is certainly NOT a 'tree surgeon'..... Still pretty service industry-esq though IMO. Knock those who work in Service industries and call 'em parasites, and you risk insulting a large chunk of the users of this forum IMO.
  14. Never a good idea to assume. Generally best to ask For instance, what (in you opinion) is the occupational role of a part time aboriculturist?
  15. Ahhhhhh, I enjoyed that...... sorry. .....want your thread back for a bit?
  16. That's a fine selection you have there. Don't think they comply with The Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regs 1996 though! Hang about, lets not start all that again......
  17. Steady on though... Pot / Kettle or Greenhouse / Stone spring to mind. Forestry / firewood / carving may create wealth. Arb work is almost entirely a service industry though. Where is the wealth creation in doing a bit of a crown thin on a sycamore tree?
  18. Nah, I hate signs. Hate 'em you hear! Especially 'STOP - works' signs
  19. Do companies have an option though? No one wants to employ an apprentice for 4 years any more. No one wants to be an apprentice for 4 years anymore either. Employers expect staff to magically appear from university with exactly the skills they need. Youngsters want to drift in and out of jobs as the mood takes them (as long as it doesn't affect their social life) Organisations want to hire contractors on short term contracts and then tell them to sling off. Its not 'Health and Safety' that's at fault here - its how more a case of how modern business chooses to work
  20. Again, LA thinking not 'H+S industry' thinking. A thread that runs through most regulations is that staff must be competent for the task they are expected to complete. Competent, not trained. Totally different things.
  21. Diff, any luck with that 'flammable hand cream COSHH assessment'? My Mythbuster offer is still open Anyway, are you sure its the 'Health and Safety industry' that is your problem (you clearly find it upsetting) or is it 'Local government'. I really think it's the latter. Where did your organisation find their H+S professionals. Were they promoted from the stationary department? You say no one is allowed to think in the modern working world. I cannot think of a single regulation, ACOP, or section of IBP that advocates this. Infact I would say it is entirely the opposite.
  22. Are you sure you second that? Surely the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regs made it a legal requirement to do EXACTLY what you are saying since 1999
  23. When this sucker hits 88 mph You're gonna see some serious shtt!
  24. good call fella, that's good enough for me
  25. Disagree Agree - that's why you have two........ good job they are half the price
