  1. It will vary depending on species, moisture and length. I'd be working on 45 myself.
  2. That's a good point, surely they can't ban you from selling it as not ready to burn. A customer can buy a log to process themselves, rings, undried firewood or below 20% firewood. At what point in the process of making it would restrictions come in?
  3. To be fair wood dust supposedly causes cancer so everyone on this forum is doomed anyway.
  4. If it happens it's great news for me as a supplier of dry wood but I still think it's ridiculous - there's more than enough paperwork in the world as it is and I would rather see a limit of 25% which is achievable to air dry (under cover) in our climate. Hopefully it doesn't get through and we see a policy to encourage not regulate responsible wood use instead.
  5. You should see it as a positive. Even the animals in the logs are dry.
  6. We're getting a fair bit by agreeing to take the whole lot from jobs, it's easier for the contractors but a bit more work for us. It's a struggle to lift some of the stuff onto the log trailer. I wish I could cut more softwood, last time I had an order for 18inch lengths and putting it through the 12way on my own I was doing a ton every 6 minutes.
  7. Only as a last resort if we get too much sell as billets. Since we got the 480 the oversized logs are a smaller percentage so we can sell them all but the wood we're buying in now could change that.
  8. It's a ryetec 40ton, will do 4ft length and diameter. It's got hydraulic flaps to hold the log and hydraulic splitter height. Was about 16k, probably a fair bit more now. I slightly prefer the deutz but they're not designed for reverse drive and forestry guarding so we got the valtra for the log trailer. We've still got 2 deutz though (a 6215 and an older 120).
  9. It's a 14 ton trailer but it's rare to get more than 5 or 6 ton on with hardwood. Ours is averaging 7.5l an hour because it's mostly on idle with the crane. Yes, they told me it's the only way they could get it to pull so well but I'm not a fan. It can catch you out in auto c/d if it does it going up hill but I'm used to it now Another plus point is the steering lock is amazing, better than most small tractors.
  10. If you can't get a forklift in a walking floor design could work. Maybe add a chp boiler to heat it and power the fan at the same time... Seriously though, if you cut back the brash and fixed the glass I think it would dry nicely in there. A small solar fan would probably reduce the risk of mold but it's a balancing act between airflow and keeping the heat in.
  11. T174 direct (vario). Got it last year, it's reverse drive to use the log trailer in the cab. It's gone well for us, very comfortable with plenty of power including with the spools. Had a few minor issues with the touchscreen but they're sorted. Personally I don't like the slight delay as it shifts into high range at 14+ mph but that's just because I'm used to the smoothness of Deutz. Having the handbrake on the forward/reverse lever is a good feature and the touchscreen is the best layout I've seen and very useful.
  12. Been picking up wood from local farms recently, some very nice, some not so much.... Also some splitting.
  13. £15-20 a ton I would think if it's easily accessible. You should be able to sell it at a good price at the moment.
  14. You can nearly always buy them from the manufacturer /dealer. If it's the infeed it's usually the same as the original but with a joint.
  15. 45! I've been tempted by one of those for years, thank you for curing that.
  16. Just had a look out of interest and they are quite a bit more but I found some 3mm ones for less than a pound. I quite like the idea of boxes for stacking too and possibly they would be easier to fill with less snagging.
  17. I don't see why you can't reuse the nets but experience says a lot of customers don't do returns. .. I'd go with paper bags/boxes, you can use them to light the fire then.
  18. It's possible they're stacked on their sides or something but the second trailer is higher despite having the same 4 bales. Hard to say unless you were in the situation but I wouldn't say the one on the outside was to blame. I think the one on the inside was to blame but it's easy to take the high ground from a random Internet forum.
  19. If you look closely they seem to be different bales so I'm guessing they weren't going to the same place. Looks like the the second driver was in a faster tractor and thought it would be a good idea to overtake on a sharp corner with a higher load...
  20. No idea about the legality but if someone was willing to put me through extra training I think it would be pretty reasonable to either take a pay cut or agree to a contract to stay with them. The employee is gaining from it as much as the employer but it's the employer that's taking the risk and as inoffthered says you always have the choice to not take the training contract. Another way of looking at it is if an employer said to me they wanted a £1000 up front but I might be fired after a month I'm pretty sure I would be demanding my money back if that did happen so would want a contract.
  21. Are you sure that's all the questions? I don't mind really. The grids not an issue for us because we're moving between boxes but you would need to push the bits out approx every 5 cube if not. Their grader bolts straight on the end and I'm sure you could cover the base grate or just let it build up if it was an issue. If you open the door everything stops and the splitter reverses so the clamp doesn't work. We run our 35x at 430 - the processor is designed for 400-430 and there's a display on the processor if you don't trust the tractor. We get no issues with the 6 but it stalls the tractor if you chainsaw and split 12 ways at the same time on big hardwood. I was talking to our mechanic last week about a pto gearbox to turn 540 into 430 which would up the hp to.
  22. Nice video, interesting to see a completely different approach to a processor when all the others are so similar and you can see all the little modifications you've made.
  23. I only use it on short pieces, the two flaps keep longer logs from falling at angle anyway. I think there's no short setting as it splits before the next cut on all but the smallest logs anyway. The shortest the stop will do is 10inch but I have a bit of wood on it to do our standard 9 and add another bit for 6 with no issues.
  24. Thanks be good to see a video, there's a button on the joystick to reverse the ram at any point. For some reason most people don't use it who I've seen cut but I like to do just what you said and only push the logs half way each time so the next one doesn't flip on short logs.
