  1. Yeah that's a good idea I think I was just to keen! Was going to glaze it and inscribe it for an anniversary present next month but may of fluffed it... Down the florist for me!
  2. Ok your all being really helpful and it's very much apreciated, although I still don't no what to do lol I think I'm going to strike while the iron is hot and oil it relentlessly because it is quite dry. After about 5 layers I'm going to finish the sanding and then I'm going to finish it. Any recommendations on finishing?
  3. P.S I have about 10 more of these rings if anyone is intrested? Not planed and sanded though. Going to cover them in chip I think to stop them drying so fast
  4. Ok thanks for all your sound advice guys. I've been sanding it and it's going well it's smooth already considering It's wet it needs more of course. So say if I apply boiled linseed oil which I already have a number of times say 5 coats this may stop the cracking? And then I can start the sanding process after? And then think about the finishing process. Is this correct? Thanks
  5. Well I went at it today and its going ok, but wet still so slow going but going to have another pop in a weeks to e so I have 7 days to educate myself on he subject
  6. I was always told for pine resin is that if you get it on your equipment or hands in the tree, as soon as you get down kick up the dry mud at the bottom of the tree (make sure it's dry) rub it on the resin thouroughly and when you get home will just rinse off and it's worked for me
  7. Or should I just go mad on the sanding start at 40grit then 80 then 120 and wet it in between in the latter stages? Then go mad on the linseed oil? Coat after coat after coat? Also how do I get the bark to stay on?
  8. Hey guys, Attached is a photo of an oak ring I'm working on its about 180 years old and ways about 60kg. Having a bit of a problem really. I've planed it and I'm currently sanding it down with a belt sander, it's going to take weeks to get it right I know. But it's only been down for 4 days and I know sooner or later it's going to dry and split! How can I stop this happening? I want to eventually teak varnish it and make it a nice display piece but it has to be dry for me to varnish it no? But if it drys it will crack? Help me please Thanks

I mean buying in wood like 20t at a time processing blah blah I sell small amounts in nets at the moment, but is it worth going bigger? I'm not new to the game I've been doing Arb all my life, just don't know if the money is there for firewood. Just some friendly advice needed here please

  21. Hey, Just doing some research and was wondering if you guys could help me. Basically what are the biggest Arb based companies in the UK? I know obviously Bartletts and Gristwood and Toms also City Suburban but are there any others? I wanted to know what kind of money these guys are turning over? I looked on company's house and city sub was easy and gristwoods but bartletts and glendales wasn't even there
  22. Hey, Looking for some saturday climbing work around Essex/Kent or London. 7 years climbing experience, full driving licence, cs30,31,38,39, own kit, own chainsaws. Experienced in big rigging and large reductions. been working in australia working on the big big gums so pretty competent i think, working in london currently. 07401567707 pm me on here aswell.
  23. Hello mate, I done exactly this with my girlfriend and it was great. I went to Melbourne to start with for 4 months and then drove to Brisbane for 2 months and came back (wish I hadn't) Basically when you get there look up citywide Melbourne they have tree jobs n the city, also Aardvark tree service always employ and I worked there myself, Taylor's tree service is a good company and also red backs tree service. When you get there just ring them up and tell them your an experienced uk climber and you will have a job the next day. You should be expecting $58,000 a year. Which is good money. Stay in a holiday park. Discovery holiday park in Chelsea is good and it's about $300 a week plus bills (which is cheap) So when you first get there, rent a car. It's important because everything is a million miles away, then go to your local Medicare centre and sign up to Medicare (there NHS) Once you done all this your pretty much sorted. Also we preffered Brisbane to Melbourne to be honest. Much warmer.
  24. Well I've got all the saws etc and a very large tractor and trailer. So going to Go through the woods and ring everything up (and there is some BIG stuff) then go through with the tractor and load up. So no output really oh and have a 20ton splitter and a 6ton splitter. So not much output really I guess. Gonna start small I think but not axe I just love forestry and it seems all there you know
