  1. It had been reduced in the past, but I think because of the location it had to be a fell. It's a shame, it has altered the landscape a fair bit.
  2. To be honest mate, the company I work for don't really do firewood, most of the wood either gets divided up between ourselves or the owner. Now and then they'll get a few people loading up their own trailers with wood to split themselves. I know they're missing a trick but it's not my company. As for knocking money off the quote, I guess it's up to you, our boss knocks money off in relation to how much time it will save in ringing up and shifting timber, but then he doesn't sell the stuff on. As for tonnage, haven't got a clue.
  3. WHALLOP!!!!!! That really would have been a stunt fell!
  4. Thanks David. You can't tell from the photos but the tree looked like an old graft as well. It had quite a prominent graft line just below where the fruiting bodies were. And the two stems had included bark. How long do you think before it would start to hollow out?
  5. Cheers bud. Manitou saved a lot of ringing up of some very heavy timber.
  6. Not a grcs, wish it was! It's a Hobbs. Would love a grcs bit the boss wouldn't stretch to it, still, we muddle on through!. It was quite straight forward really. Stripped off the back side of brash, leaving plenty of the timber up there till the front side had been rigged off, in the hope of trying to keep it balanced....just in case the decay was proper bad. The important thing for me, was the lowering was nice and smooth to avoid shock loading, which it was, well done to Chris! It was deceptively fat so the stem was rigged off itself and then felled onto the Manitou forks and gently eased to the floor.
  7. I Was a bit unsure whether to post this as i didnt want people to think id nicked someone elses job, but.... a while back there was a thread on here about a beech with ustulina/kreutschmaria deusta that had to come down. Basically, the property it was in, was an old house turned into flats and the property management company that looked after it is a regular client of the company i work for. We look after the trees on all their properties and at the bosses house. The tree was overhanging the road/footpath and was on quite a busy junction. There was quite a few opinions on how everyone would tackle the job, so for those that may be interested, this is how we did it. All went swimmingly. Boss put two days on it and we easily got it done by lunch on the second day, even squezed another job in as well.
  8. Hi bud It's perfectly safe add long add your knots are right in your friction hitch. Have a look on the knot guide on the forum. It'll take a bit of getting used to. Hauling and then pulling slack through is very different to prussiking, but once you get the hang of it, you'll never go back, moving around the canopy odds so much easier.
  9. Good job he wasn't going the other way
  10. I lost mine within a week of having it. Glad the wooden brake is screwed on our id have probably lost that too! I know honeys do plenty of spare bits for them, whether they have those I don't know. I haven't bothered to replace mine, is it that essential?
  11. I've been a member for about 6 months now, as you can probably see, not submitted many posts but am on the forum whenever I get the chance. I'm a member of a fly fishing forum as well but that gets really bitchy, this one however has some great posts on it and I've learnt a fair bit since being on here. I've been climbing for about 6 years now, went to myerscough college to get my nd in Arb and did a year in Oz which was a real eye opener! I'm making a little resolution to post more and try to get a bit more involved in the forum as it's quality. Might start by getting one of those avatar things sorted:confused: and try to post some pictures up...one can try!!
  12. Nice Find. I Bought Some Cheap When I Went To Thailand. Great Rope Bags.
  13. We HavA Cabstar a And An Iveco At work And While The Iveco Is A Better Ride And Way More Comfy In The Cab The Cabstar Can Hold More, Pull More And Get In More Places. As Mentioned Though, It Will Get Stick On A Dog Turd, And We Have A Twin Rear Wheeler, Utter Gash On Grass. Quality Trucks Though.
  14. Why Has No One Come Up With A Little Battery Powered Silky Yet. I Would Pay Good Money For That. A Dream For Reductions.
  15. We Got A Hobbs A While Back Cuz The Boss Wouldn't Run To A Grcs,They Do Look Great, Id Love To Have A Play With One For A week.
  16. For me, MEWP is a bit of a waste of time, dont get me wrong, they definately have their place, i've done plenty of jobs from a MEWP, but i reckon they're slow and can get in the way of a drop zone. Cranes are great, could easily get that down and tidied away with a good couple of blokes and the right kit on the ground by lunch, although, given i know where that tree is and how busy the junction can get, i reckon it might be a pain in the arse fitting everything in. For me, Rigging it down into the drive would be my choice. Ustulina is a nasty one, but i reckon if your gentle, it'll come down a breeze. Felling it would be a no no for me, no knowing which way it'd go. Thats my take
  17. Am i right in thinking thats six ways in charlton kings...looks like it. If it is, it can get well busy. I've done a few takedowns on trees with kretzsch and like someone previously said, as long as you're not gung ho with the rigging it'll be fine. If you need a hand im local and more than willing. All the best bud.
  18. Right cheers for that fellas. You could have just saved my licence!!!
  19. Hmmmm...i should really have looked into it properly and not taken his word for it. So no driving the 5.5 tonne full stop?
  20. Just signed up to the forum after being a "lurker" for a while and am a bit confused with the whole towing issues. I have a post 97 licence but my boss has put me through my B+E licence. We have two trucks, a cabstar (3.5 tonne) and an iveco daily (5.5 tonne). My boss has said to me that i can tow the chipper behind either of the trucks as its classed as 'plant'. Im not sure about this, i was just wondering whether anyone could shed light on this. Cheers
