  1. In my experience with contractors in France they carry a "Devis" (quotation cum contract) form in the van. If you ask for something they go to the van write it down with a price, you read and sign and everyone is happy and knows where they are. Cash jobs, of course, are different.
  2. If I followed the method given here, wouldn't it depend on the length of the stick? If it was a two foot stick I'd end up further away than if I used a three foot stick, wouldn't I? Maybe I'm missing something. The way I was taught in the scouts was to get a stick walk back until the stick ends were level with the base and the top and then spin the stick to the horizontal, keeping the bottom end still in line with the base - thus forming a right angle triangle - note where the end of the stick appears on the ground and then measure or pace it off.

Okay I'll just set it so that it runs, picks up quickly and sounds all right without sounding like a demented banshee!

    Fs400

Thanks everyone for your help and advice. Stripped the carb, cleaned it and then discovered that the valve lever was about 1/8" too high. Sorted it, put it all back and hey ho it starts and runs. Now perhaps someone could tell me where to get a tachometer so that I can set the max revs correctly
  8. Recommendations please on which to buy and, if possible, where. Thanks

    Fs400

I reset the basics as suggested and it starts but won't run and then it won't start again and appears to be flooded. I'll strip the carb out and start and give it a good clean.

Thanks everyone. I'll have another go tomorrow if it isn't chucking it down, as usual of late. Makes me glad I live on a hill.

Thank you Gardenkit. I'll have another go, following your advice. Much appreciated

    Fs400

I rebuilt the FS400 that I posted about before and it now runs well but just doesn't want to tick over. If I keep the throttle open it runs okay. I have set the carb controls to the basic set-up position and have tried adjusting the idle screw. Just so I don't waste a lot of time I'd appreciate any advice on the sequence of things to check. Thanks in advance

  14. Crikey! He's done that before.
  15. One picture of a girl, all the male chests start get puffed up, the adrenaline kicks in and before you know where you are the fighting starts. - If you don't believe me see above! Great stuff:001_rolleyes:
  16. I know I'm daft, but what's a European gaff?
  17. I asked because recently I tried to throw a line into the top of a Maritime Pine - which only have branches at the top - and couldn't get anywhere near it. I reckon it was 20 - 25m high. Compound bow and a very heavy arrow next time!
  18. You only need two. The front wheels aren't braked

    Stihl fs400

I now know that they were on the wrong way round. Unfortunately it still won't run as at some time it has broken a piston ring which has then made a really neat groove up the wall of the barrel. I assume that it had seized. New barrel and new piston and rings. Not the bargain I had been led to believe!
  20. Lots of you on here have plenty of experience with throw bags. What do you reckon is the highest you have been able to throw a bag with any sort of accuracy?

    Stihl fs400

I remember, having thought for a bit, that I was careful to put them back where they were when I took them off. They were probably on the wrong way around when I got it, because, as I said, it had been dismantled at some stage. I'm sure you must be right. Many thanks

    Stihl fs400

Sounds good. I will look at that later on today and let you know. It may be that I put them the wrong way around on the bulb. I didn't know that it made any difference.

    Stihl fs400

I don't know whether it is an old problem as I have just acquired this brushcutter. The screws were loose in the carb so I took it off, checked that it looked clean inside, tightened the screws and put it back again. The brushcutter has at some stage lost a piston ring which has trashed the piston and barrel - but I can deal with that. There were quite a few other things like missing screws and jammed starter pawl. All simple stuff apart from the carb. I'll take it off and check the pipes again but it seems strange that with the front cover of the carb off and I push the bulb, fuel appears to flow out of the main bore of the carb. Does this suggest a failed diaphragm? I looked at those and they seemed okay. Any suggestions welcome

    Stihl fs400

It's not the fuel line. I took the filter off and the plate behind it and can see the fuel running out of the barrel

    Stihl fs400

I have a Stihl FS400 clearance saw, which when I pump the bulb to try and start it the carb leaks fuel through the front of the carb barrel, Is this normal and if not what might be wrong? Help please
