  1. Ah I think I may have seen it at the APF. There was a guy near the Exeter boys with a small stainless retort but didn't realise they were working together.
  2. Thanks again Steve Looks like I better crack on with my prototype! If all works as hoped it would produce 100 kg a day and cost less than a 1k. Not neat and slick like the Exeter but hopefully cheap and productive if your prepared to be hands on.
  3. Thanks Steve. Didn't know either of them made a smaller model. Nothing on their sites so will give them call. Have you seen either?
  4. Just got myself a 560 with Oregon Pro-AM 20" bar. The saw runs it lovely like a hot knife through butter. Pity is had the nose bearing seize twice already. Been told to take it back and change but not a good start for the bar.
  5. Granite. Get lots of it in the trees on our Devon banks. When they have been layed in the past they then cast up with earth and small stones onto the bank and then new growth encapsulates it laying in wait for muggins here to blunt his saw for the umpteenth time.
  6. As above About to get a small retort made up but just thought I would ask you knowledgable folk before spending hard earned cash on my experimental design.
  7. Just seen Dougs new website and he does hire chippers D S Bennett UK Ltd
  8. I cant see any reason to doubt the OP. Most of what they say is true whether we like it or not. One thing that I think maybe has made log sizing worse is processors (width not length). Unless you get in small size wood you will often have oversized lumps coming off the conveyor. Do you retrieve them and re-split or let it go? Very tempting to just let it go. Our processor can take 14" diameter timber but can only split 6 ways at most. So you end up with something cut to length of say 9" but it's 7" across presuming the wood hits the splitter perfectly central! In reality wood is misshapen and sometimes does not hit the blade as you want. 7" width for a log is far too much IMO and with perfect being 3" - 4" across? Very easy to keep to this if just putting logs through a splitter by hand which I think one of the kiln dried importers on here said is how they do logs. So if using a processor options are Re-split over sized pieces Big processor that can take 12 way splitter Get in small roundwood which is rarely an option Let oversized lumps go through We do the first and it is a PITA but we are making a product for an ever more discerning market not hacking up wood the easiest way.
  9. Log Desperate you might find this useful for working out how many lose cube you have to buy to fill your sheds with stacked logs http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/firewood-forum/64099-stacked-v-loose-logs-conversion-rate.html
  10. Normally space on the main road at the bottom of Rocky Hill. Sorry Shavey it's Doug's fault I didn't get a Dolmar Never would have risked getting a 560 without good local backup.
  11. Thing is Steve very few customers have the space for just that years logs let alone having the next years ones drying as well. But a cube or two when you need it is just convenient for the majority. Shame the OP could not find a single UK supplier to suit there needs.
  12. Yes he is doing sales. Just bought a 560 off him and he matched R and T on price. Not sure if is hiring out kit. He is on Rocky hill in Tav where Plymouth Rubber used to be
  13. You don't like doing logs do you TCD I like the challenge of supplying particular customers, mind you there are couple I could live without
  14. Tavistock tool hire and Champion tree services. Tavy hire have TW 230 for £100 a day Nick Champion has a tracked TW but costs more. http://www.tavistockhirecentre.co.uk/ https://www.facebook.com/ChampionTreeServices/?fref=ts
  15. I work on 2 cube a tonne but beech is at the heavy end of the scale if fresh cut.
  16. Don't see why we cant undercut imported wood. Yes the work is done cheaply but there are a few operators in the supply chain and from what I have seen the retail price of imported logs is in excess to quality local sellers.
  17. Haha Your not wrong on most of it. We don't use bags but suspect the chap using 90cm square bags is supplying a cube. Tried some 100cm square bags once but due to how much they bulge could get way over a cube of logs in it. I can see why the imported stuff is gaining popularity and we try to offer the same quality product but home grown and air dried I have sent you a PM
  18. I have one of the DR wheeled strimmers and it is very good but if mulching bramble it is going to eat through cord and changing it is not as quick as you might hope.
  19. That looks the mutts Al. Would love one of those
  20. True but so easy with hindsight to think how you would do things differently:001_smile:
  21. Folks used to have G wagon which had full diffs that allowed you to spin every wheel. Made little difference to getting out of a slippy situation.
  22. No idea on the law but you get plenty of it around here along paths and bridleways.
  23. Don't let facts get in the way of all the bitching
  24. To me it looks like it was sharpened with a thin grinder. The straight part is from the side of the grinding disk and the curve at the bottom is radius on the rim of the outside of the disk.
  25. Not made the slightest difference to me as a self employed low earner according to this little calculator Budget calculator: How will the Budget affect you? - BBC News One thing that has continually helped low earners in recent years is the rising threshold before you pay tax.
