  1. If you want an ecologist's view, I'll be happy to help. I'm qualified (MIEEM) and Arbtalk discounts apply
  2. I went to a nightclub in the village once, couldn't believe there was one there (this was in about 1997). I was with a guy called Padley, who you may have heard of...
  3. That's the one. Can't believe it's closed! What a shame
  4. Well hi-de-ho neighbourino... Loved it round there, used to walk up the road to the pub by the river (can't remember the name) with the dogs every evening in the summer. Happy memories of the spaniels charging round the silage fields and pints in the beer garden watching the oyster catchers.
  5. True! I can remember 2 particular vol rangers (both older gentlemen) who were lucky not to get their lights punched out - one waving his walking stick and shout obscenities and another trying to direct traffic straight into the middle of a forest fire during an evacuation.
  6. Ooh, don't get me started on volunteers... I was responsible for 80 of them at one point, and yes, they sometimes did some slightly odd things. Over the course of 7 years I don't remember any of them turning up in their own time (OK, all volunteering is done is their own time, but you know what I mean) to do anything, never mind cut trees down. 'Friends of...' groups, now they really are a cause for concern. I had one of those apply for a grant, get the money, hire a mini 3060 and dumper and start work on a (public) site all without breathing a word of it to anyone. Life is funny sometimes.
  7. Some things are totally unforeseen I suppose. I've never told anyone who works for me not to turn up on a site by themselves and start hacking trees down - I never felt that I had to and it wouldn't really have occurred to me.
  8. I lived in Calderstones for a bit (after it was redeveloped...) Most of my time round there was near Whitechapel though, in a bleak old house up on a hill.
  9. Yes, I've got a good friend who does films. This is his latest project (he did post-production, audio fixes and titles): He's done all sorts of stuff, lives in Kent and works in Central London.
  10. If push came to shove it's trespass which is actionable per se. £30 spent on a solicitor's letter would encourage him to wind his neck in.
  11. Any ducks flying back'ards?
  12. I always used Renapur on my boots - excellent stuff. Then I found Leder Gris which is even better.
  13. Sack the volunteer. Tell him never to come anywhere near the site again. People like that are dangerous.
  14. Whereabouts in the Ribble Valley are you? I was a chainsaw steward at the hedgelaying competition on the A59 site a couple of times.
  15. Always good to see skills like these getting airtime, and high profile people who think about things that matter rather than self promotion. Nice to know people from this site were connected as well
  16. Good stuff! One for I-Player while I'm doing the week's ironing

    tough mudder!

Good luck! My wife's doing it in May. Me? I've got enough on my plate...
  18. That's not completely accurate. We have genes that are not present in other life-forms and vice versa. Gene presence/absence can even vary from one person to another. Scientists breed goats that produce spider silk http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fish_tomato
  19. Ditto. To coin a phrase, I wouldn't touch it with yours. These genes will find their way back into the system eventually, with totally unknown consequences. Tomatoes with fish genes? Goats with spider genes? No thanks. I take the reports of rats becoming sterile/cancer ridden after 2 generations of eating GM food with a pinch of salt, and get annoyed with scare stories as they don't help anyone, but GM is about profit for the IP owners and nothing else. Yes, that's how business works, but most companies don't send out the message that they have the technology to solve all the world's problems.

    ITBS syndrome

Yes, I suffer from it. Not great, because I have to run a lot in my other line of work. I've had it for over 2 years and in that time I've seen 2 physios and a Level 5 Sports Massage Therapist - the latter was the only one who's helped really. I use the pigeon pose stretch: I found using a roller on the part of my leg between the hip joint and the knee did little other than hurt. Using it up higher, on the very top of the band (where it's got more give) does help a little though.
  21. Why thank you! Happy to help, drop me a line if you're interested. [email protected]
