  1. Soz, Mick. Some sort of matrix style glitch there, my reply was to Mark but has shown as being to you. Not intended.
  2. Probably aspiring civil engineers on a gap year volunteer / WOOFING programme...,
  3. The statue clatter will be all forgotten by the end of the weekend. The focus will have shifted (already started with Mayor Khan’t and James OBrexit this morning) to ‘extreme, far right, racist, fascists counter protest descending into apocalyptic violence’ which will send the gutter press and BBC / C4 into a full on glacial melt as they fall over themselves to report a couple of pissed up football yoofs having a ding-dong with some purple headed lefty whilst completely flossing over the (anticipated) Marxist organised, wide spread vandalism, violence and general lawlessness which will undoubtedly follow the BLT protests.
  4. Just statues Mark, what about features of world heritage status?
  5. Where you from monkey? Are you a SW native or otherwise familiar with CLOTTED cream....? If you are NOT familiar with clotted cream I could understand the confusion. It’s like butter not like runny cream. Slap the clotted cream on (generously) then a conservative application of strawberry jam on top! And a half fresh strawberry on top of that!
  6. Get to the bottom of things..... What does that actually mean? UK is amongst the most tolerant nations of the planet with equality enshrined in law. What’s happening now is those that shout loudest are being pandered to at the expense of democratic process. Example, there were several votes surrounding the issue of removing that statue in Bristol. None of them were successful so it stayed. Now it’s gone because a mob decided they were more ‘entitled’ that the majority. Where is that gonna end up? Labour councils the length and breadth of the UK are now saying “we’ll just take that down and put it in safe storage for the time being” because lawlessness and the acceptance of lawlessness has prevailed. Im all in with the condemnation mate, slavery was barbaric. But it was of its time and it was a multi national / multi cultural practice. I feel absolutely no responsibility for it and I fail to see how a UK resident in 2020 can claim to be disadvantaged by it. It’s utter nonsense.
  7. You know me better than that Mark. I’m not saying 2 wrongs make a right. Im saying the arguments that underpin the whole BLM issue are utter tosh.
  8. Not sure I entirely grasp what I think you might be trying to convey there Mark. It’s fairly safe to say however, there isn’t a widespread, smouldering discontent amongst the Cornish towards the Vikings, nor those of African origin, on the basis of the current day interpretation of the ‘crimes’ of their long passed ancestors. Cant say the same in relation to Cornish antipathy towards the English though, that iS alive and well (perhaps not with the same degree of venom as might be experienced in Scotland, and to a slightly lesser degree Wales, but alive and easily encountered on a daily basis none the less.) I frequently experience those sideways glances, that unsettling feeling of suspicion, I’m called an Emmet and generally feel like a ‘foreigner’ and a second class citizen. It might be because I’m English and have my cream first, jam on top or it might be because I’m an abrasive barsteward by nature ? Think I’ll start an ELM campaign in Cornwall and see if they’ll tear down a statue of Trevithick on the basis that it’s continued presence offends me because it reminds me I’m not Cornish.....
  9. I don’t have any interest, other than as a casual observer, of that actual set of circumstances Gary. Just saw it happening and thought back to your circumstances from a while back.
  10. A little ‘erased history’ for the white privilege, Empire apologist BLM sympathisers: Memory of Cornish coast dwellers kidnapped for slavery 'culturally erased' WWW.TELEGRAPH.CO.UK The memory of thousands of Cornish people who were kidnapped and sold into slavery has been “culturally erased”...
  11. Interested in any thoughts.... Scenario (I'm thinking of you @Gary Prentice) Homeowner wants to replace their drive within the RPA of a TPO'd tree. Understandably, LA would require Arb report, TPP, AMS, possibly an engineers report, engineering solutions to avoid root damage (and probably improve) the rooting environment, would probably expect hand excavations within RPA, porous surface finish, SuDs compliant etc, etc etc. And if all of that wasn't considered to be at least not detrimental to the tree, at best an improvement..... The request would be declined. No beef with that as a scenario, I'm not looking to discuss whether it's right or wrong, I'm just saying that would probably be a base line that we would expect in this circumstance.... So, why are these types of stipulation so often completely ignored - worse than that even - they don't even come into the conscious decision making cycle when applied to highways? How can a homeowner have any confidence in 'the system' when they see such disparity right in front of their very eyes? The video is local, 10 minutes ago. I've watched these works over the past week or so. They're expanding the pedestrian walkway in the vicinity of a fairly substantial, relatively recent housing development and appear to be doing some utility work at the same time. With absolute wanton disregard they have clawed through areas which were previously designated as being within the CEZ of the development and now they are trenching within spitting distance of a TPO tree (yes, the Sycamore! Why it's attracted a TPO is another issue but it has.) What a shambles and if I were the homeowner with that Sycamore I'd be a bit miffed! TPO RPA - HD 720p.mov
  12. Technically, it certainly could be an offence to drive the track and squash a sapling maybe even a seed! But there would never be sufficient evidence to support any action. Using a brushcutter to clear the verges could (probably would), technically, be a breach.... We'me all outlaws, bandits and vagabonds!! ?
  13. That raised a wry smile ? Totally agree, it would appear unreasonably bureaucratic and mean spirited - but the potential for an offence to be committed would be tangible.
  14. I wouldn't focus on the word derelict - its not helpful. If a structure has a realistic potential for renovation - as opposed to a complete demo / rebuild. If it has some original standing walls for example, it 'may' be capable of conversion. A debate that has come alive recently with Class P and Class Q repurposing of buildings to residential use. Reading this thread has been useful for a current work scenario.
  15. That was like listening to the 3 wise men, watching the sun go down and having a chat over a beer ? ’Race’ and ‘discrimination’ as per the current topical debate are entirely man-made constructs. 1 race = human race within which there are extreme variations of aesthetics, capacity, capability, intellect, physiology, etc, etc, etc. World would be a much calmer place if folks could live with the fact that some are better than others at different things. I don’t cry and bleat about a Gurkha being able to breath at an altitude where I couldn’t or a Maasai having a massive schlong. It’s just the way it is. All the current circumstances demonstrate to me is that multiculturalism is ultimately doomed to fail on the basis that some bastard is always going to assume the mantle of ‘the hard done by’ and it will always be somebody else’s (rather than their own) fault.
  16. BBC ? Was that a cornerstone of your “education?” Recalling Africa’s harrowing tale of its first slavers – The Arabs NEWAFRICANMAGAZINE.COM The 25th March was commemorated as the day Britain officially abolished its Slave Trade in 1807. But how many recall...
  17. I haven’t ‘read back’ coz it’s late, I’m tired and it’s likely drivel anyway.... But I’m inclined, nay compelled, to agree with your disagreement! No, the blind spot in all this self flagellation is that Africans captured, transported and sold Africans into slavery. Holy shit! Africans are implicated in the slave trade. Wakey wakey white apologists.
  18. There is not a country on this planet that is free all forms of discrimination or racism You’re right mucker, apart, maybe from Canada, the UK is probably one of the most tolerant. What a total, utter, unmitigated crock o shite this whole BLM issue is. MLK said, judge a man by his actions not by the colour of his skin. dick heads will always be dick heads, decent blokes will always be decent blokes.
  19. RAF Stafford (as was) would have been an ideal location. All ‘inside the wire’, safe and sound, as a concession, maybe throw them in the Wardroom (Junior Services might call it the officers’ mess) as a concession. Let them have the best of what they expect others to live in. My suggestion, and I still stand by it, is a purpose built site in MK. A pre-fab all inclusive business/living site. Throw it up on brown field, cancel multi billion £ renovation of Westminster, hand Palace of Westminster over to English heritage as a public attraction. There is not a sane, reasonable individual that can argue against it - only the snouts in troughs will say otherwise.
  20. The R1200GS and the KTM scrambler went when the nipper came along. Used the cash to buy a range cooker for the kitchen extension. I s'pose a cooker is safer than a bike but I'm feeling the pull to get another.... Think of everything you can to try and influence the Magistrate, good luck (and slow down!)
  21. Play along Egger, it upsets the Reds ?
  22. Everyone of an adult qualifying age gets the same universal basic income. From that you pay all your liabilities. No council tax rebate, no family support, no free rent, no married tax allowance, no income tax. Just a simple, single figure the same for all. I mean, just imagine the dismantling of HMRC and DSS! The savings would go a long way. You want 10 kids, no problem. If you find a house, and pay for it out of yr UBI (and what ever you do to top it up) good on ya. Of course there’d have to be a redistribution of wealth to achieve it but even I can accept that the extremes of wealth inequality are unsustainable. Apologies to Mick, this should really be in a thread called making the news TOMORROW. Who’d have thought that Turkish incident would have started a thread that’d still be rolling strong? It nearly died but rose again! Bloody BREXIT!
