  1. Wasnt planning on that back actor, just posted that as an example.
  2. Hi Guys, ive got the option of a Kubota compact tractor B2110 (21hp), The option is part payment for a job (ive know people for ages and tractor is good). I had planned to sell it on and put the cash towards a 1.5t mini digger, However ive been thinking maybe to keep it and get a back actor and front loader. seems sensible as the 3point linkage options offer way more versatility than a mini digger such as flail cutters, rotovator etc. But i wanted to see if anyone had experience of the back actor being any good? example Lewis landlord 200 back actor digger excavator with pto pump for tractor. | eBay Im sure id use the compact more than mini digger hence idea.
  3. Use it 99% of the time, and we put a lot of fences up. We often mix some small stones in too (or broken concrete) bag and a half (25kg bags) per post is fine if the ground is firm and hole is quite tight. 10" across with a 4" post. we buy in bulk (pallet at a time) so get it quite cheap (supplier even holds it for us). Occasionally use concrete but only on big gate posts where we can let it go right off (set posts on a Friday, hang on a Monday) Haslemere Fencing Home Page
  4. Buy the best you can afford and the biggest you can realistically use, like clothes for kiddies, you can grow in to it. Otherwise you will be changing every few years as you get bigger. Also, IMO something only costs the difference between what you pay and what you could sell it for. Fortunately my dad has always lent me money for new machinery, pay it back a heck of a lot quicker than i would on finance. sooner its mine, the sooner if i had to i could sell it.
  5. so does mine
  6. All jokes aside, Id go with the town you live in and "tree surgery" e.g anytowntreesurgery Quite simply think how people will find your business. If its web based (google) it will help like mad because people search by the service and town they live in. since we changed our name from a family name (established over 100years) to Haslemere Fencing Home Page weve never been busier. Also, before you decide, check the name is available. A firm i worked for once had all their printed stuff done with their .co.uk name on it, but hadn't registered the name, what a mistaka to maka.
  7. That wont work,,, im a fencing contractor and looking at about 50/50 materials labour, also, the last 3 years official tax return is 18months ago we are doing way better now. its a posser!

  9. Tough one, glad you've asked this ill be interested in the responses. We get around lots of places and often see the horse field shelters with metal skids on the bottom so you can move them. ive been told this gets round it for these?
  10. Hi there, i wonder if anyone can help? A few months ago my truck was hit in the back, causing about £700 worth of damage. Did all the insurance stuff, got the truck fixed, and am in the process of claiming back the costs (excess, loss of earnings etc) I filled in the forms, included the receipt from my garage for the excess, but we've hit a hitch with the loss of earnings. The truck was off the road for 2 days, so i took my daily rate £150 x 2 (£300), put that down. My solicitor is asking me to prove that that's my earnings. They want audited accounts for the last 3 years. I cant do that as im a sole trader, no worries then they said, 3 years tax returns? I said that does not reflect my earnings because the tax i pay is based on the turnover less business costs. I always calculate my tax liability and where possible buy equipment, plant etc to minimise my liability and improve my business. They are saying i need to prove my earnings, how can i do this?
  11. I just dont fill the 1 ton bag so full, and use two!
  12. Cool, Friend had a timber shed and he lined the inside with reinforcing mesh, they still got in. I could put the wife in there,,,, that would scare them!
  13. Hi, does anyone use shipping containers for storage? I was thinking about it (cladding, and adding a pitched roof). I thought they maybe a bit more secure than a wooden shed? Do they sweat/build condensation inside? any other advice?
  14. Interesting thread, Obviously we are in a different field (fencing) but always face similar issues. I always visit, email the quote in full with copy of insurance certificate. Friend who is a tree surgeon visits and gives them a price there and then, he says he gets more work because if it sounds about right to the customer, they will often accept there and then (without going elsewhere). He then backs it up with written quote copy of insurance etc. Also very occasionally we will price v competitively because we need the work, the work would give us good exposure in an area where we can advertise on the roadside, or because we want to do the work. If the guy who undercut you had a commitment to his team to pay them, he is better of getting the work even if he makes a small profit than not getting the work, having no work and having to pay guys to do nothing. all swings and roundabouts

  17. I do min 10 - 14 days, that give flexibility to choose a good weather window, never gets too long
  18. We always leaflet everywhere we work (the local houses next to where we work), get some lawn signs (vista print), ask friends and family if you can put them out side their houses (take them away after a week or so, move them on). We are always very very competitive on work that is on a main road where our signs and vehicles will be prominent for a few days that with a lawn sign left for a few days after reinforces the work. (great for hedge reductions big trees etc where people really notice). Get a good website Cards in newsagent windows, If we see a rough looking fence, the guys always put a card in (2 to 3 per week as they drive around), guess the same with a tree? Check out the planning applications for tree work and reductions, extensions etc, send a leaflet. Keep an eye on house market, recently sold houses get a leaflet (team up with a few other trades) do a welcome to the neighbour hood trades list. Hows that Haslemere Fencing Home Page

  23. Hi, ive got to put a low fence on top of a stone wall. There is already an existing fence bolted down on part of the fence using shield anchors and bolt down met posts. I dont like the look of some of the stone for the new bit of fence so wanted to use resin, threaded bar and met posts. Anybody got a prefered make/ supplier of resins, tips, how much would be needed??? (there is about 24 holes/bar to do) Haslemere Fencing Home Page
