  1. Pricing more jobs at the moment and want to sort something better out re insurance. I call in fully insured and qualified self-employed/freelance arborist, but I'm the customer contact and arrange the jobs. Called NFU local office as I was concerned that even though the arborist is insured, the customer or whoever would want to claim from me for damages etc as the job contract is between customer and me. Same goes if anything happens to a third party's property - they would want to claim from me, not the arborist I have put on the job. Anyway, I didn't think this would be a problem......BUT NFU have just got back to me telling me that they can't cover me, even though I'm not climbing and working in the trees, as I'm supervising the work. They can only cover me for the landscaping and groundwork I do. I won't have the customer deal directly with the arborist I'm contracting as it's my job I've priced, and I know how sneaky some of these freelance types can be.... getting in tight with the customer and getting all future work directly leaving me in the cold So what happens if the insured and qualified arborist drops a tree on a car or injures someone? How should I go about getting insurance to cover me in the case something the arborist has done causes problems? Thanks in advance. Pedroski
  2. I don't mind that, but it's when they start licking my tackle I feel a bit sort of disconcerted. Mind you, it could be worse..... if your dog is top dog in the house and expects you to clean his tackle for him......
  3. 8mm hitch on 11mm rope works proper.
  4. We have a border terrier/jack and a lakeland/jack. At night they both sleep in baskets with blankets over them on the kitchen floor, with the door shut. During day, they sleep anywhere. Definitely wouldn't have them sleeping on the bed at night - we love them to bits, but dogs can end up a bit too "needy"!
  5. How about...... speaking to a local sawmill/wood place and see if they could do it for you for a few quid. It might work out more efficient and cheaper than buying your own gear as it's a small amount.
  6. Course I did, and a bit more
  7. Tried again just now though, with only few peeps in there and it was fine.
  8. PC - just wouldn't have it. 75 in there, it let me join but then Adobe crashed due to unresponsive script
  9. Really sorry to hear your news Egg. This is something that's worrying me at the moment - I'm fit as a flea, don't smoke, hardly drink, active life etc. I'm 44 and have had bad shortness of breath on exertion for past 12 months, and chest pains. Back at end of August I was staying in hospital with daughter and got hit with bibasal pneumonia and CT scan showed couple of problems. I'm now being seen by cardiac consultants and stuff, had bubble contrast echocardiogram that confirmed finding of CT scan, now got to have "catheterised cardiac angiogram" in few weeks and all sorts of stuff. Being in hospital due to my daughter's accident, and being his with bibasal pneumonia has kind of saved my life. Weird! 40s are a dodgy age for so many people. I'd urge everyone who starts suffering from shortness of breath and chest pains to go get proper checked out. Keep on at the GP, get referred to consultants. Make a fuss. Too many people say nowt and hope they'll just be ok. Unfortunately, too many of these die, often leaving partners and kids without Dad.
  10. Anyone having probs? I was ok at about 6.30pm, now I keep getting an "unresponsive script" message and haven't been able to join in the raffle draw!
  11. Fencing is ok. We do loads. But there isn't really a lot of money in it - just the usual materials + labour. Try to make too much profit on it someone else gets the job. Especially at the moment with so many builders not having much work on.
  12. :001_tongue:Can anyone supply me firewood by the cubic yard?
  13. He's way out in his thinking..... doing it with a grey Fergie tractor... disaster waiting to happen! He should be using a green Claas one. Seriously though, I reckon he should pull it upright with the tractor and just heel it back in. Job's a goodun.
  14. That odd amount, I should think, is because of the extra donations bit. I bought a strip but added a bit of extra, and I reckon quite a few might have done same. That's a right good total though init! Gone up by close on a grand in just a couple of days!!!
  15. What, like naked arborists?
  16. Steve, brilliant work on doing the raffle, and those who donated prizes....massive thumbs up. It was really nice to get the email from Jo - that, and knowing it's all going to a good has made it really worthwhile buying a ticket and making a donation, even though I won't win anything as I never do I feel proud of myself for joining Arbtalk!
  17. Priced up a job yesterday - remove 2 stumps and a small conifer. Went there this morning, wiggle first stump and it fell out of the ground. Hit second with a pick and it fell apart. Cut branches off the small conifer, chuck root chain on the saw, cut through one root, yanked the skinny trunk over and it fell out the ground. Now just having lunch and then off to the composting yard. Nice day's work that. Customer well happy, came out for coffee and 45 minute chat, and gave me a tip too Glad I didn't price it by the hour!
  18. Glad it's back up already.... in time for lunch
  19. Try Beacon Fencing on the A272 just off the A23. We get all our fencing and posts from there, often made to our spec. Their prices are fantastic. Website Fencing, fencing panels, decorative fencing panels, tool sheds, garden sheds and garden products - Beacon Fencing Ltd

I've been doing landscaping (hard and soft), hedge and tree work, site ground work etc, self-employed but working full time while doing my university research. I've been really slogging my guts out for a mate of mine for the past 12 years or so, and have finally decided I've got to move on!

    Cheers again,

    Pete

  21. And we don't need one. If you look in the regs, there is a "derogation" (which means partial repealment of the regulations) for combinations of vehicle and trailer if driving is not the main activity of the driver, and the driver is driving within 50km of vehicle base. It says "Vehicles or combinations of vehicles with a maximum permissible mass not exceeding 7.5 tonnes that are used: u by universal service providers as defined in Article 2(13) of Directive 96/67/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 15 December 1997 on common rules for the development of the internal market of community postal services and the improvement of quality service to deliver items as part of the universal service; or u for carrying materials, equipment or machinery for the driver’s use in the course of his work. These vehicles shall be used only within a 50 km radius of the base of the undertaking and on the condition that driving the vehicle does not constitute the driver’s main activity." But the whole thing really is a pile of steaming poo. We often want to collect plants and trees from Evergreens in Banstead, which....as the crow flies.... is 58km away!
  22. Nope, not us anyway.
  23. Hi there Mr Wuss.

I hope you don't mind me contacting you. I've noticed from your profile that you do building efficiency upgrades and solar PV. Just wondering if you need anyone for writing reports or anything, or with connections down south here? I'm currently landscaping, but environmental work is where I want to be. Although primarily I'm qualified as a Dr (D.Phil) in Env. Science related to contaminated land and uncertainty in human health risk assessment input parameters and modelling, I'm really good at research, statistical analysis and report writing, and want to be involved in renewables, including geothermal.

I completed my D.Phil last year, as a mature student (nearly 45 now). I spent previous 10 years working in fraud investigations, airline account services and establishment services at Amex. I'm good with customers (they love me, seriously), and problem solving.

If you're not able to help directly, would you have an idea of who might?

  24. Early lunch. Nice weather. Wind forecast to pick up later. Work this morning was recovering a friend's 14ft trampoline and netting cage that had taken off over 6ft fence, flown over a shed, and landed in middle of pampas 50ft away in a neighbours garden. Now waiting for a call from another neighbour re take down of 40ft conny that is currently resting on someone else's fence and shed and the root has lifted damaging a fence as well. Lots of wood. Priced it at £120 to take it down and log it where it is, and the lady is having to ok it with her partner first. Just spoke to her and he wants her to call the insurance co! Yawn. Repair to damaged fence I'll price separately when the conny is down.... hopefully just another length of gravel board and some nails! If I get to do it this afternoon all will be good, otherwise with the wind tonight there might be more damage. Fingers crossed for more wind though. Been quite nice the past couple of weeks doing odds and sods! Back to full time on Monday coming.....
  25. L14M, I just read my post again and it sounded like I was taking the mick. It wasn't meant to sound like that! It's just something I always think about. I used to find it really hard walking along roof joists and stuff because I was always looking at the ground 9 feet below. It was only when I got it in my mind that as long as I could walk on the ground without staggering or falling over, then there was no reason I couldn't also walk along floor joists without falling over. In a tree with things to hold on to and a rope for protection it should be safer than walking floor joists, but the brain doesn't always see it that way when everything is moving around.
