  1. I personally don't pull over but and its nothing to do with being thanked. I generally want to get where I'm going as quick as I can and when you can only avaerage 25-30mph it makes all the difference pulling over or stopping. Car drivers can make up the time lost waiting for a safe place to overtake but I can't. Hgv's are another story though!
  2. I was approached by a an arb company that was dismantling 47 large ash on country estate. it was tight and they wanted minimal ground disturbance so no large machinery. I priced the job to be what I thought to be a fair price and was point blank laughed at!!?? I'm not being funny but how much do they expect two people to work for and run a machine as well?? It was a good weeks work at the very least!!?? What kind of money do you guys charge for a weeks work?? Some people I know charge per ton others hourly rate but I'm sure nobody works for free!!!
  3. We have a kawasaki mule that we use for the really tight stuff but it can be more of a pain the arse sometimes as ground clearance is not great and it tends to get hanked up on stumps. Failing that its the little deutz 4506 with forestry cage on it. But it is getting a bit tired now. I have been toying with the idea of a compact tractor with a powered forestry trailer I have seen a video of a little 18hp yanmar go up a banking with about 2ton of wood on a powered trailer and it would show most valmets up lol
  4. Got a 54 plate 4life plus with rallieart chip and it pulls like a tractor but has had its problems!! Heater matrix went three times starter went the truckman didn't fit and rubbed the paint off the rear tub and back of cab and at 47k the head went porrus and was quoted 2500k to sort by a the main dealer! had it since new and now own it outright but its getting run into the ground before I change but only because I'm tight lol would buy a tdci defender next anyday of the week by far a more robust workhorse and with the 6 speed box its like a car to drive when you don't have a trailer to haul!!! But at 18k you don't even get leccy Windows and even the cubby box inbtween the seat is an extra. If it was me is do as earlier mentioned and spend a couple of grand on a ifor wliams tipper it will work out the cheaper option by along shot trust me.
  5. HI all I will be starting to fell and extract 75 acre of birch near Dumfries very soon. All cord between 12-3" ideal for processors. Haulage can be arranged and smaller collections welcome as there is a weigh bridge on site. Plz pm me if interested. Many thanks.
  6. I have nearly ten years in the woods felling and extracting. It was a relocation to an area with no forestry that prompted me to move to climbing. In all fairness im not a 19yr old lad with all the gear and no idea. Ive worked hard to buy my gear through the years and have i would say more saw time or "time on the tools" than most people i meet within the climbing game. most of which upto now have no tickets and the only one that knows what he's doing is usually the fifty something fat chap stood on the ground that hasn't been up a tree in a dogs age. All the same thanks for your input.
  7. Hi all as the title say I'm running a small scale firewood setup cutting and splitting by hand (hardwork but I have youth on my side). I have a 25.8 ton of seasoned larch and iv so far done 25 .8 of a cube bags. My parent run a much bigger setup in the Scottish borders with a porsch processor and also bought a load of the same cord when I did. They processed it into the same bags as I have and took it to the quarry next door and weighed it. It came in at just over 200kg!!!! So that's 5 bags to the ton ish??? Yet everyone on here says says you can only get a bag and a half to the tonne!? The wood is very dry and it came on a wagon and drag stacked to the sky but still there is a massive difference between 1.5 bags and nearly 5 to the ton!! Does anyone have any thoughts??
  8. Hi there I have recently passed my cs38 and I'm refreshing my cs30/31 next week then going onto do my cs39 on 2nd of Dec. I have my own truck trailer ppe and saws and climbing gear. The only thing I'm short of is a chipper which ill hopfully get early next year. I'm looking for a job in the northwest area preferably near blackpool Preston or Lancaster. Would be happy to subbie on a cassual basis if prefered. Many thanks.
