  2. Hi all I have a huge load of cherry and I could use some advice on the best way to store it and keep it good for hand carving as long as I can. 8. It's all in the moisturising. Split a log/piece of wood, axe the split face flat making sure that you remove the pith, take a drinking mug and draw around it onto the end of the log (leave an inch or two on the end to allow for splits). Draw a handle along the log from the circle, round the end of the log off (the circle end) then chop off everything that does not look like a kuksa. Finish the shape with a knife. Use a spoon knife to hollow the bowl. Take your time and have fun.
  9. Thanks Paul, I look forward to the photos of yours :-)
  10. Hi all A friend kindly gave me a maple log which had a few burr's. I removed the burr's And from the largest burr I carved a kuksa The wood was difficult to carve with the grain changing direction a lot!

    wood wanted

Hi all I have made a chair I needed a chair today, so I made one :-) - Arbtalk.co.uk | Discussion Forum for Arborists and I have been asked to make more, I used six feet by twelve inches of oak about an inch and a half deep. I need wood similar sizes (could be narrower) to the oak but I am open to suggestions of other woods that would also do the same job.
  16. Hi all I needed a chair today, so I made one :-) It is based on the African style chief chair, I used a saw and axe to make the "paddle" shape then made the slot using a brace and bit and draw knife. It is surprisingly comfortable, I will tidy it up later with a spoke shave. Seasoned oak is tough!
  17. Great stuff especially the bowls
