  1. Mike, that is exactly what i said about the only good thing that has possibly come out of this shocking event, please all of you think before you work, i spent years as a paramedic dealing with the aftermath of unavoidable accidents that ended in injury and death, I’m so cautious about risk. Go to work and go home as you turned up.
  2. I m not too bothered about them competing with me, what does bother me is they are doing it with the chipper and the many chainsaws and other pieces of tree kit that the fuckers have taken off me over the years. I spend every night with a live picture of my barn and property on my iPad at my bedside waiting to catch the thieving bastards,
  3. Nice, very similar to ours, easy in the summer but ours burns continually in the winter, not a bad thing though as we are swimming in wood that was becoming a real issue.
  4. It has in Ireland, also fucked up the government due to greedy Irish buggers drying out wet waste so it weighed less for end disposal, or burning biomass to heat their fields! Its in their breeding .
  5. A beautiful place, we’re about are you? How did the ab&b go?
  6. This is mine, its a log burner with a 4000 litre accumulator tank, its heats my farm house, barn and new build rent, its a great way of getting rid of wood waste, i used to pile all of the wood up in summer and burn it , probably 100 tonnes each year. Your place looks great.
  7. Stephen don’t stay on naproxen for too long if you can help it, it increases your bp and elevates the chance of a cva. I had both my knees replaced not long ago and was on naproxen for a while.
  8. Is that a pellet or wood burner?
  9. Very similar to our situation, its a right nightmare, we had to register as a self supplier, we’ve just built a new build to rent out so as to conform to business RHI. What burner set up do you have?
  10. Do any of you out there heat your business property with a bio mass burn? How difficult was it to get the RHI done?
  11. Bartletts don’t you just love em[emoji23], being an AAac doesnt mean you are better than others but It does open your eyes to some good practices and advise. we have been there and done it so have seen it from both sides.
  12. Ratman, we should all stand back and take stock of the situation, but some don’t and carry out the work with no plan, now thats their choice. Having a document makes you all as a team join together on the same level and “sing from the same hymn book” as the saying goes. It also acts as written proof that the task was understood.
  13. Its got nowt to do with masses of paperwork on the job site,a proper written risk assessment will draw the attention of the group together on the details of the task, its one page of paper, it also provides proof to me as their employer that they’ve had a chance to talk about and hopefully understand whats expected of them on the day. As for AA approval and using sub contractors to do your working assessment , yes we have heard of this happening I believe that is wrong. Personally none of our staff are payed minimum wages, even our arb diploma staff get payed for work experience days, without our committed hard working staff we wouldn’t exist, they mean an awful lot to us as does their safety and well-being. Seasons greetings to you.
  14. Give over, shit happens but what happened in that incident was totally avoidable, the incident occurred because of having no concept of the potential dangers of his actions, it was totally foreseeable that the possibility of a mishap was coming.
  15. Spuddog, i think you may have not understood my post, first step I look at every job that we do, I evaluate the job and come up with a method and system, My team take that MS and carry out the job as close as to that as possible, they do a site specific RA. If the MS has to change for whatever reason then they amend it and I don’t mean when something HAS gone wrong!, if its a big deviation from the method then I would expect the team leader to contact me and discuss the issues if I ain’t on site. A lot of work that we do is high risk highways , EA and commercial work that said every job has the potential to cause risk. A good idea to get up to speed with risk and how to manage it is to become an AA approved contractor it teaches you a lot.
  16. Get the price/time right then the jobs an earner and no rushing because your going to be out of pocket, its easy. Oh a one other point don’t buy work in like a lot of companies do, that includes large utility companies who end up going bust.
  17. Chris, I’m don’t know how long you’ve been in the trade, but when i started out there was only one company that would insure you, this was because there had been so many incidents/accidents and claims that the risk was too high. It was an industry that was high risk but any fool with a chainsaw and a van could set up in. I like to think that its a bit more professional now, but alas it still attracts those same types of people who have absolutely no idea how to do the job safely ,to a good standard and invest in training CPD and expensive conforming kit and PPE. These sorts of avoidable incidents have a knock on effect for companies who strive to do the job right by increasing costs to cover claims. Doing the job right and having the correct H&S Structure in place also leads to the high end contracts that pays for all of that effort and conformity. It pays to do it right. Season greetings to you.
  18. Hi craig, as a well respected and fellow yorkshire arborist whats your opinion on this unfortunate incident, you like me have many years of tree work experience behind us and an awful lot stories to tell.
  19. Well put Kriss especially the last in brackets bit, cutting corners can be a very expensive not only financially but it could end up with a spell inside, issues that may seem trivial for example the lack of proper chapter 8 TM on jobs ( that we often see on our travels around) can end up as a criminal offence if owt goes tits up.
  20. Hi tree-fancier, ratchet strap are a good tool to have in the box, that said we ( me and our team of lads) all agree that that tree was a climb higher job/MEWP if access would allow, even before reading skyhucks awful dit about the two brothers we had discussed the real possibility of that stem coming back up to contact with the lad as it contacted the bank. I know there are a few lads on this thread who think that no amount of RAs or MS would have stopped this horrific accident but we believe it would have seriously reduced the risk. I believe that I am reasonably qualified to comment on issues of safety and planning having spent 20 years of my working life as a NHS Paramedic and studied risk management. Proper planning does work. The only good point that has come out of this horrific accident (that I for one did not like watching )is that it may assist experienced arborist and newbies to the trade to realise how a moment of misjudgment can lead to a life changing event. I hope the lad makes a full recovery. Stay safe.
  21. About 6 years, i think its a 10kw version, i cant fault it, we heat the living room and kitchen with it, the whole farm complex is heated with a biomass log burner 68kw, we’ve not burnt any oil for over a year now.
  22. They’re good stoves, we have a double door one that heats both rooms, it puts out a lot of heat, spare are readily available.
