  1. I'm after a new long arm hedge cutter and was wondering what people would recommend? At the moment I'm looking at the husky 327 or one of the Japanese ones echo, tanaka, etc... It looks to me like the Japanese ones are all virtually the same but with a few minor changes between brands. Cheers all.

    pricing/rates

I normally put prices in for larger jobs where the bills will be higher. Then the customer knows what it's going cost. Small jobs like the ones your getting asked to do I do on an hourly rate. Speak to a few people locally to you and find out what a good fair day rate and hourly rate is for you.
  3. Had something similar with mine. Was becoming harder and harder to get into first, second, and reverse. Turned out to be the clutch fluid was really low. Changed and bled the clutch and it was sorted. Don't know if this is any help but worth a check as its a cheap fix.
  4. I had a 2003 one. I was the second owner, was owned by aggregates company. Had 122,000 miles with fsh and did almost everything I asked of it. Wasn't good for towing, and mpg was around 25 so not great. I would recommend them. Just look for one that hasn't been abused its entire life and you should be alright.
  5. Bit of a long shot but does anyone have any knowledge on these. I've been offered one with less than 1000 hrs on the clock for £4k. I don't really know if this is a good price or not and what they are like as tractor. Would be looking to use it to run a splitter and a saw bench. Cheers all.
  6. I brought a new saw this week and it comes fitted with stihl's new duro chain. It's got high carbon teeth and is meant to need sharpening four times less. All sounds great until you find out the price for a replacement 14" chain is £45. Does anyone have any experience of the chains and are they worth the money.
  7. I've got 50 tonnes to move from crowborough to Sheffield park. A forestry company are getting me the number of someone who might be able to help.
  8. As the title says really, I'm after a towable splitter and wondered if anyone has one for sale early me next year. I'm in the south east but would travel a little way.
  9. Does anyone know if a company who has an 8 wheeler for transporting timber in the south east? Also anyone have any ideas on price, it's a 16 mile round trip. Cheers all
  10. I've been delivering logs in my hi cap landy all week and notice that it sits quite a bit lower when it's loaded. Can anyone recommend me some bits so it carries the weight a bit better. The previous owner fitted pro comp shocks and the springs are orange but apart from that I don't know any more. Cheers all
  11. What tooth sproket do you guys use on your 361's. I'm running an 18" bar and don't know which one gets the best out of the saw.
  12. I've been asked to price a job for some friends and need a tip site near by. Anyone know of anything? Cheers all
  13. I've been towing a 2 ton digger behind my ranger this week and I've averaged 19mpg. Looking for something a bit cheaper to run as we've got alot of work coming up that involves towing a digger.
  14. We've got a walnut tree in our garden and having just been and looked at it I'd like to know if this is normal or not. All this years growth is still a nice green. The rest of the leaf on the tree has either fallen off or is turning brown and due to fall off. Just seems very odd to me as the rest of the trees near us are still green and it's just the walnut browning off. Anyone any ideas?
  15. For no other reason than just having a look, I've seen an l200 warrior 07 plate for sale locally. It's done 70,000 miles has 10 months MOT and he is not asking alot of money for it. Does anyone on here use one as a work truck, why do you think of them? Is there any age related problems with them? Cheers all
  16. The only reason strikes don't work any more is because alot of people will quite happily moan about the increase but won't do anything about it and just carry on. Its about the only thing the French can do right, when they have a strike the whole country gets behind the cause. Not just a few die hards and the other who will winge but cave in far to early. If a strike was to work here everyone has get behind it, not just the tanker drivers.
  17. A few weeks ago i won a contract to carry out some tree work for my local parish council. Having met with the guy who was organising the work he said we had won the tender. Although the work was being organised by the Parish coucil a local home owner was paying for the work. A few days ago i got a phone call from the counciller saying the gardener of the home owners house has said the quote was to high and wanted to get a few more. Having asked all the other companies to re tender i didn't get asked. I then got a phone call saying that the tender was getting cancelled and re awarded to another firm who were previously alot more money. I was not informed of any changes to the decribed work or asked if i could lower my price at all. My question is do any of you get the client to sign something once you have been awarded the work to recover any costs for time or cancelled orders etc.. I was thinking along the lines of £100 or 10% which ever is greater? This is only because the work was worth quite a few thousand pounds. Its not just the lost work but the time i have put into getting the quote put together and having to cancel things i had booked for the job. The whole thing was done on a very informal arangement so is there any advice anyone can pass on for future referance? Cheers All.
  18. I've just gone through this process, Hilux is probably the best pickup to buy but you pay a premium for the relability, build quality etc...... With you budget you'll be looking at a high mileage 2.4td or a lower mileage 2.4d Ford Ranger/Mazda B2500 this is what i settled for. I paid £3000 for 120,000 miler with full history, immaculate body, and a 6 month warrenty. Really pleased with it. I do more road driving than off road so suits me fine. There are normally a fair few for sale so you can shop around a bit. I didn't look at L200's or Navaras. For the money you've got to spend would either get you a td25 Navara with lower miles or the dreaded d22. If you opt for a d22 check the history of the engine. Alot of them have shot conrods throught the block. Ones that have had repalcement eninges may not have had the required mods to cure the problem so be aware. L200's can crack their heads resulting in a £2k plus repair bill. This won't have happened to everyone's navara/l200 i'm just speaking from what i have experience with friends ones. Both on my mates who had navara's had to have new engine's fitted, and i've got 3 friends who have had no end or problems with l200's. In my opinion have a look on ebay, autotrader, local papers etc and see whats around locally. Its alot of time and money to loose driving to the other side of the country to see something that's no good. Work out what you need and not what you want. Oh and not to forget the mighty defender. I've had two of these, great off roaders but i do alot of miles so wanted something a little less agricultral. Parts readily avaliable, only tin worm effects them fairly badly.
  19. Sorry should have put I'm in Sussex near haywards Heath.
  20. Is it worth more as log wood then or worth contacting someone to see if they would buy it for turning?
  21. I've got a job taking down three large lime trees. There is going to be a large amount of rings to be taken away from the job. Question is is the wood worth anything apart from for log wood?
  22. Does anyone know what a hilux 2.4td can do mileage wise? I'm looking at one which has done over 160k miles. I know these will go on forever just dont know at what point they will die.
  23. Yes it was hallmark forestry, don't know where exactly it was cut. If your interested send me a pm and i'll pass your details on to him.
  24. Depending on where you are in Sussex it might be worth giving David Rossney a call on 01580 712 417 or email [email protected]. He runs a company called esus forestry who just deal with training. He's a really nice bloke and if you qualify for any funding he'll sort all the stuff out. When I looked at doing my CS38 it worked out £300-£350 for the training and the ticket because of the funding i qualified for. Hope this helps, Tim
  25. A friend of mine is cutting cord near Hailsham in East. He's got about 150 tonne cut and stacked at the moment, with another 150 tonne to come out over the next few weeks. He offered me the wood but due to problems with the council i can't buy it. He's after £45 a tonne roadside, he can arrange deivery at extra cost if needed. The wood is a mixture of hardwoods with the first 150 tonne having alot of hornbeam in. If your interested PM me your contact details and i'll pass them on. Cheers Tim
