I’ve done a couple and didn’t find the spikes/thorns as bad as the internet suggested I would. They were relatively small (young) though. Maybe 15 and 20” DBH.

I saw (a shortened version of) that the other day and was enraged at the crassness of leaving the bottom half. It took two days to get to it. Just finish the job in twenty minutes extra while you’re there rather than sentence someone to another two days at some point in the future. I’d be cross if I was buying electricity from that line and paying for the upkeep.

The base. Less sure about the spalted bit. Thought it could have been the same because it’s turned and finished but not mega surprised it’s different. I don’t think I’ve seen Robinia spalt. That’s not to say it can’t. I could guess the common spalters for the mushroom but the grain looks too coarse for them.

If you’re going to bust by hand, just do the rest by hand or with whatever drill you already have. My pneumatic impact wrench can only just get some of the van nuts off if the cylinder is brimmed. Usually end up breaking them with a bar first. I then only really use the windy gun because I like feeling all industrial. The point of a nut gun is not needing to fag around changing to other tools. I’d say it’s all or nothing on a comparatively small and infrequent task. Get a dildo if you just want to buy something. Milwaukee will do an M12 but you hang around with rugby players so look at Hilti.

Gotcha. Sometimes I'm thicker than I look. You'd still be finding the amount of torque taken to overcome stiction, not friction though. If that distinction does matter. I share your amazement that there aren't easier papertrails for stuff like this. We have the internet. I asked Hyundai about the bolts for my my little chipper. Something fairly small like M8s that hold the blades on the drum. They told me something mad like 165 Nm, which they clearly googled and ripped off the Timberwolf specs that appear at the top of google for 'woodchipper blade bolt torque.' I suspect the bolts would have snapped like blackboard chalk. They gave me a more reasonable number after that, which I use because it's in writing and it's sane but I suspect that was still just derived from a chart.

Does undoing with a torque wrench give you a true reading? Like how you’re meant to be moving when tightening to click to read friction, not stiction. Plus they’ll be rusted on etc. Plus in tension with the wheel.

Apprenticeship plan: 2 days a week, forty weeks of the year for two years. 160 days. Income - £110 a day. Expenditure - £10/day for lunch and bicycle maintenance, £50/day to your mum for bed and breakfast, £50 in the gear fund. Depends. If you teach the right sixteen year old a lot (over say 160 days over two years) then they should be coming out with enough money to set themselves up well for freelancing and they’ll be ready to perform and make more like £300/day. If you treat them like a bitch and they don’t learn anything, then yeah, they’ll want more money instead of education.

I was climbing for someone once who said I could just fell a pair of butts on a block paved yard. One a bit under 3' DBH, one a bit over. I talked him out of it and chogged them onto pads, hugely unenjoyably. Suspect I was the stupid one there.

That's the exact opposite point the cartoon is making. Let's say your arbtalk character nemesis StimepedP42 is a full on communist, a position I abhor. Their house smells of fags and the children have sticky fingers. I'd far rather go there and attempt, fail or not, to find common ground or convince them of the virtues of my position. Whereas let's say I share your opinion on most matters and we would both enjoy an afternoon clanging steels with a 223. I'd at this point take the communist because you make your position, whatever it is, feel unattractive by association. That doesn't mean I can't objectively view your opinions as what they are and put aside the source but the source will always factor in a bit. We're not 100% objective, utterly unemotional, utterly rational beings.

I've made the point elsewhere on here before that I think the switching system on the Stihl MSA 220 tophandle and the MSA 300 backhandle is crass and dangerous. Might as well make it here too. One of the things I hated about it was the auto shutoff after x seconds. Look at this video posted on an unrelated thread today. tl;dr - It's a dodgy tree. Skip to 21:00.
