  1. If you follow Berry's recipies you nearly always end up with a sweet wine. Learn to use a hydrometer (v easy) and adjust sugar accordingly. Look to produce c12% alcyfrol:biggrin:
  2. Releasing greys is illegal so best not tell your clients that, even if it is a porky. It might get round!!!!!!!!!
  3. Not sure exactly what you mean but the gills are similar on both. The only difference I can see in 'Mushrooms by Roger Phillips' is that cornucopiae tends to be more funnel shaped. Colour runs from grey to brown on ostreatus so that doesnt help. BTW couldnt find cornucopiae in fungus directory.
  4. Isnt it P. cornucopiae (branched oyster) If not please educate me as I may have been getting this one wrong. (Still edible tho:biggrin:)
  5. Similar thing happened to me with a MS660 13 months old but not many hours. The shop said they would return to Stihl who analysed the fuel mix which was OK. Stihl said as 13 months old no warranty but at least the shop fitted parts for free. Never found out cause. Also crank went in a Stihl Brushcutter after a few hours use, got repaired under warranty. As yours is a Husky (never had problems with them myself) it is probably just life being life...........or poor quality control?
  6. How very dare you thats a Jeep
  7. Hope this is the right place to put this request:confused1: I need 6x twelve foot wooden field gates for a woodland fence. Larch would be great but treated softwood would do. Anyone making them or know a good supplier, preferably local to N Yorks/Co Durham, or will anyone deliver? Also need 4 off 8"x8" 8 foot long gateposts. PM me if needed. Ta
  8. Try Aske Estate, Richmond. A mate gets 30 ton loads from them, seems happy enough.

    Poplar

As I need to leave it in the woods, and dont want the faeries to go with it, I will have a go at billets 'cross-stacked' and covered and see what gives. Bark on/off? Thanks for the advice.

    Poplar

Anyone got experience of using poplar as firewood or charcoal? I find it impossible to dry in the round (to any useful point) outside. Would splitting to final size in lengths work ? Any advice (apart from suggesting I go into match or oast house floor production) gratefully received.
  11. 4 mile walk after dins, with sun on me back, along River Swale thinking how much the riverside alders need sorting, watching newly arrived curlew and oystercatchers flying and calling followed by a couple of Brakspears. Could be worse.
  12. Making a press is fairly easy, just good hardwood and big bolts (M20's have not broken in mine) Plenty of plans kicking around the net. But you need to 'chip' or scrunch yer apples up first before they go into the press. Try YouTube. Some good some bad ideas but youll know what you need. Good Luck
  13. My 8 yr old christenened the chipper 'Blake', cos its a Bearcat and has a picture of sommat like a Tiger on it. Always call alders 'Larrys' as in Larry Adler. Suppose we should really call em Alans! Oh and of course, its either "pass the Brian" or "pass Immanuel" when i want the cant hook.
  14. The lop + top will also make a good hiding place for bunnies. Couldnt agree more regarding charcoal etc tho:thumbup:
  15. We seem to have forgotten that our woodlands and their wildlife have evolved to what they are today, not beacause they were 'managed' but because they were someones factory floor. (Yes I realise that the very act of cutting, working woods is management, but i'm just a poor creature of the heath and couldnt think of a more concise way of putting it. I hope you know what I mean:confused1:)
  16. Facinating thread. I'm about to start on a similar out of cycle hazel coppice, and I havent worked on one before. As the EWGS (WIGS) hasnt been finalised yet, work in earnest will start early next winter, although there is a fair bit of prep needs doing first. I have dutifully ordered the FC book recommended, and printed out FCIN56. All good bedtime reading. Cant agree more about the BTCV book(s). If any of you are interested the best book on woodland crafts etc I have found is 'Woodland Crafts in Britain', Herbert L Edlin. Long out of print but not too hard to find. (Amaxon/Abe Books?) Please keep this thread alive as it will be very interesting to see some pix of how the regrowth is going etc. BTW cracking pix of all your handiwork.
  17. Our wood hasnt had any 'official' fauna or flora survey done. Might just get on to the EWGS man and get him to comment.
  18. Not having a dig at you, but how are you (me) meant to know if the trees we are felling have the biggest colony of the rarest bats in residence? Obviously we would make efforts to find out, but surely if were getting money for felling something, it should also be provided for finding out if we will be causing a problem/breaking the law if we do. This is not a plea or more funding etc, but a genuine concern at what I see as a serious incongruity in EWGS Please tell me I'm wrong!
  19. DONT go wide. My 130 on BFG MT wides was scary. Swapped to normal width BFG MT and a massive improvement. All local game keepers and utilities have wides, but as someone who does a LOT of muddy/wet field stuff I would always stick to normal/narrow tyres.
  20. Just going through similar (actually on a WIGS, Woodland Improvement Grant Scheme which is part of the EWGS). Have done a few before and they seem to work well. Just remember to claim for the follow up stuff after year 1!) But to my point, if you look in FC ops note 9, Standard Costs, there is no money available for flora/fauna surveying, which surprised me. Is it up to you as the grantee to provide this, or dont they expect you to do it? Was it specced in? I would be interested to know!
  21. When working near blind corners on narrow roads, you may notice people take little notice of 'men working' etc signs and coning. Talked to (very helpful) local police and they gave me a couple of POLICE SLOW signs to use. That slows the b****s down! So if in doubt about yer yellow lines or anything else highway related, try your local Peelers. If you have any problems with anyone 'in authority' questioning your actions, a quick mention about the police etc usually sorts it out, even if you s t r e t c h the truth a bit.
  22. Youre a star! Cheers
  23. My ear defenders are Sordin's.They do look as if they would fit but it would mean chopping the cable out of the head band and hoping they would go on instead of my peltors (on a Vertex Vent). Not too happy chopping £160 quids worth up. Will have a look at cheaper ones to bastardise. BTW FM radio dont work here so thats not an option. Anyway I want to hear the birdies sing when im not sawing!
  24. They all have dedicated headbands because only one of the pair houses the batteries.
  25. I want automatic ear defenders, like the ones you use in shooting that only work on loud noise, mine work great with the saw but cant use them with a helmet, nor can I find any that will replace the peltors on my helmets. Any ideas?
