  1. He was nice in his response to me that he said "I DO NOT give you permission to enter my land to carry out a tree survey". We could do one visually from our land which we will do if we have to but seems a bit unfair that we'd have to bear the cost. Also, I suspect he would possibly tell us he doesn't care too much for the results of our survey if it did turn anything up.
  2. Saw this on a tree (beech I think) on a walk today and thought it was interesting.
  3. We own our house and he owns the land behind us. He used to live in the house up the hill from us but sold it and strangely kept the hillside!
  4. Our house is next to a hillside that has some rather large trees on it. I had the council tree specialist out to look at it a month or so ago and he said that the trees should be surveyed every couple of years normally but since the hillside is so steep he would suggest they should be done every year. I contacted the land owner who has come come back to me to say that he checks them regularly for problems (I've never seen him down here, we're at the end of a private road and you notice people coming and going and as far as I'm aware he has no qualifications with regards to trees) and he is not going to get a survey done and he is happy they are not any issues. We're planning to put our young son in a bedroom (at some point in the next year or so) that would be under the fall path of a large beach tree with a slight twist in the trunk and I asked the council tree specialist if he's put his kids in that room and his response was no. I've asked him for his thoughts on the response I got from the land owner and I'm waiting to hear back from him. I just wondered what your guys thoughts on it were? We're in Scotland if that makes any difference. Cheers

Heard people say you can use engine oil. OK or a no no? Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
  7. We've got a big old beam from our house that we took out when it was renovated last year. We want to use it in our house now but I'm looking for some advice on how to treat it to make sure any nasties in it don't give us problems. It's been outside under a tarp for 18 months and before that was a beam in derelict building. Cheers Dave Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
  8. Winch arrived. Looks ok, cable feeds through and doesn't seem to slip but I've not had it under serious tension so not too sure. I'm going to go into a local dealer next week and probably get a new wire rope for it so I know I can trust the wire and hand bar.
  9. Need to get / make briquettes to put in our stove so it burns over night. Any suggestions on making them or sourcing them? Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk

  11. Good on the lad and for you for the encouragement. If you search ebay for net bags you should get some cheap. Might struggle to get small ones from the quick look i just had but if they're bigger you just sell them for more. All the best Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
  12. Thanks Alec, I'll let you know how I get on once it arrives. Thought it was worth a punt at the price. Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
  13. Saw this on ebay (eBay - The UK's Online Marketplace) so bid on it and won it. On closer inspection of the winch in the picture it seems it's part of this system (TRACTEL® | TIRSAFE™) and here's the user manual for it (http://www.tractel.com/files/126106343923976.pdf). Just wondering if it could be used for pulling stumps and directing falls etc or if it's a non starter with this device? Any thoughts Cheers
  14. That's the thing, one tree was on a golf course and the other in grounds of an old hospital. Both private land so wouldn't this be classed as theft? Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
  15. Moved out to the country last summer after renovating a place and was amazed to see after the high winds we had a couple of weeks ago what happened with downed trees. The only way I can describe it is wood vultures. What I mean is cars and vans pulling up when a windblown tree is and stripping all the wood they could take. All that's left is the big bits at the stump and thin branches at the end. Is this normal? It leaves the tree and are looking like a carcass that has been stripped of flesh by vultures. Even saw a couple of old ladies with a Yaris putting 2 inch thick branches in the boot... What do they want with them? Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
  16. Councils are skint and people are looking to justify their jobs. My suggestion would be check out how sound your situation is and try and make it as water tight as possible. Then fight it! It'll get passed to the legal department of the council and they'll see the money it'll cost them to fight it and hopefully see sense. Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
  17. Great looking winch! Where did you get that from? Looks like a handy bit of kit to have. Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
  18. Thinking of making a log splitter. Anyone got plans or know where I could aquire plans from. I'm looking to build a vertical splitter. I don't have a tractor so it'll need to run off a wee petrol engine. Cheers Dave Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
  19. Just looked at browns splitter. Nice kit but pretty pricey. There must be other places to get this sort of splitter for less or have one made. Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk

    Bit windy!!

Worse than baw bag in Lesmahagow for sure. Power out for about 7 hours yesterday and it's picking up again here and lights flickering a bit Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
  21. Something not right there. I sold something on ebay recently and couldn't believe how much they took. Was at least 15% of the selling price and then papal took money too. I'll be thinking twice about selling on ebay again. Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
  22. Can you do something similar that doesn't need a pto? Don't have a tractor Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk

    Bit windy!!

One fairly large pine tree down on our land and lots of other trees down locally. A number of roads shut including the M74 both ways south of Glasgow today. Some pretty bad winds. We have a house we rent and it's lost 4 tiles off the roof. Been a breezy winter so far. Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk

  25. Used to have an L200 and the guys on L200.org.uk are great and very friendly. Head over there and I'm sure you'll get it sorted. Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
