  1. Of the two planned sites the main one started to be prepared, and then gypsies illegally moved in and have been there ever since. That is the one that is meant to have around 36 pitches (which we eventually found out means up to 140 caravans). The second one was fought by a housing developer who stated they would oppose it becoming a gypsy/traveller site and keep appealing and appealing and appealing; so sensibly the council dropped their plans for this one. Our village now has 1100 houses being built around it (this was approved many years before).
  2. I was at the meeting. No-one made negative comments about gypsies or travellers, so presumably no-one was reported to the police. I wish I agreed with you, but times have changed. If I can work out how to post a link I will give some examples!
  3. When my local council proposed putting huge new gypsy/traveller sites near where I live many locals were concerned. The local planning department arranged to have a meeting in the village hall for locals to have their say. The opening statement from the planning officer was that anybody who made negative comments about gypsies or travellers would be reported to the police. Do you still believe we have free speech?
  4. Don’t hold your breath…. I can’t get the link to upload, but last month a man was arrested in Manchester for burning a Qran in public. You try to find an example of someone being arrested for burning a Bible… I wouldn’t defend doing such a stupid and offensive thing, but I thought we had free speech in the UK. The crime of blasphemy was removed from the statute books in 2008.
  5. I find the comparisons between Elon and the NAZIs distasteful and inappropriate; but I am glad people are allowed to express their view about him even if I disagree. Looking back at some of the comments in this thread at least one AT member needs to hope no-one reports him to the police, as they will certainly come knocking. Criticising Islam is illegal in the UK.
  6. Amazing; well done Tom and Les.
  7. If you use one of the tip sites listed on Arbtalk surely you are giving a third party your ‘waste’ to use. Therefore it is not waste. After all, if you let someone have logs for their wood burner that is not waste disposal. So when you tip chip you may think of it as waste but the owner of the tip site is taking it because they have a use for it. Am I wrong?
  8. I wouldn't use hornbeam for anything outdoors. It will not last at all. I have personally never burned it but I suspect this is the most likely way to get some use from it. You may find buyers for the timber if you mill it, but it is a very niche market as it is not a common timber. If it is burry or pippy this would make it much easier to sell of course.
  9. I agree with other posters on this thread. SC is OK, but never my first choice. The bottom line is it is all about dry weight. If a firewood is very light it will not give a great amount of heat. If the chestnut feels heavy then avoid it completely as this means it is still wet. If it is properly dry and cheap it might be worth it, but don't expect a lovely hot fire....a gentle warm burn is more like it.
  10. Pretty cool I say!
  11. You should give a rough location. I know from experience that selling bulk loads of sawn timber is very difficult. I have sometimes bought in sawn timber, but the reality is sellers usually expect somewhere near a retail price, whereas for a flash sale of tons of timber to a single buyer there has to be a profit in it.
  12. When I lived in Cardiff years ago the local Tesco banned pyjamas. BBC News - Tesco ban on shoppers in pyjamas NEWS.BBC.CO.UK As a regular shopper there I can confirm it was common.
  13. LI….. LinkedIn?
  14. Thank you, I will.
  15. I have read that adding a second cavity can have the reverse effect, but maybe you mean a bit further away? Thinking about it, I could maybe build an internal extra wall and fill the cavity with wood shavings. Not dense but should absorb sound well. Or would it?
  16. I am thinking of constructing a music rehearsal room in a disused office, but I will need some fairly decent soundproofing. As I run a sawmill my instinct is to use timber, but my Google research suggests this may not be great. Clearly some timber would outperform others, but has anyone got experience of this that they can share? It seems a dense material is needed, but how can I look up relative merits of species and how effective they would be? By way of background the building is timber frame with plastered walls and timber clad. Floor is concrete pad. So it is the walls and ceiling I would need to sort out, not floor.
  17. I totally agree with some of the comments above. I think gift giving has gone way too far. But of course if you say that you are called a scrooge. The expectation kids have these days is truly horrible. Luckily my two are at the age where they mainly receive money. But I always say to them expect nothing, and appreciate anything you get. I think they get it; but we live in a highly materialistic society. And then after everyone has overspent at Christmas some people have the cheek to whinge about the cost of living!
  18. Well today Reform party membership has overtaken the Conservative Party. Nigel’s star is rising. And like it or lump it the two main political parties have no-one to blame but themselves. If either the Conservatives or Labour had done a good job over recent times Reform would be nothing. I personally think we will have a new government within a year or two. I can’t see Starmer and Reeves surviving another budget.
  19. Ah I see….sort of. Thank you.
  20. Can someone explain to me what a date laning is? Then maybe I will get the joke…?
  21. Funny; but scarily close to reality!
  22. Whatever next? Does he load up a truck and then push it along the road?! No I know, he gets a chainsaw chain and fells a tree without using the actual saw…
  23. Another interesting thing….1969 Concorde first flight, moon landing, harrier vertical take-off and landing jet; a few years earlier we reached the deepest part of the ocean. I find modern technology rather underwhelming by comparison. What is the 21st century amazing equivalent? I mean this computer I am typing on which is also a phone and a camera is quite impressive; but not compared to supersonic flight or space travel! We are always being told these days how amazing technological advancement is, but what has it actually achieved that makes you go “Wow!”?
  24. I don’t think anyone believes there will be another general election anytime soon. This petition is just another protest. Another way of trying to persuade your local MP that something has gone wrong.
