  1. Reluctantly, due to weight etc considering a 60"bar and chain for sawing up very old wind blown beech trees, that get offered free for clearing.(Nothing comes free in life !!!!!). Please can anyone suggest a U.K supplier of oversized bars and chains.
  2. Are older (10yrs old) Valmet and Valtra tractors really better than other makes for forestry work? If so why. Are they any more reliable than other makes of tractor especially the older models?
  3. I am considering purchasing a kindling wood processing "SINGLE HANDED" machine. Which kindling machine would you suggest "from your own experience/problems.
  4. I went to APF today for the first time. Some fantastic equipment there,"BUT",how ever much do some of those tree harvesters cost !!! I know they would be leased or on some sort of finance scheme but the monthly payments must be horrendous, that is before diesel and wages or drawings (self employed) are put into the financial equation of operating those type of machines,to leave one with a liveable weekly wage or income. The same applies to the high horsepower mega size chippers etc. !!!
  5. Many thanks for all your replies, may be a good idea in theory "BUT",if the numbers do not stack up it is a complete no ,no.
  6. What machine/how are they baling it? Very interesting concept irrespective of the economics of the concept. Sadly idealogy and business economics are a distant apart, "UNTIL ENERGY BECOMES SHORT".At the moment we have freedom of choice of energy.
  7. Is there a large machine which bundles up brushwood or collects it by a very strong slowly rotating rake say 3mtr wide, with very stong tines/teeth,feeding brushwood and short 3" to 4" diameter branches, in to a chipper which blows the chips /mulch in to a container, which when full would tip sideways onto the ground on a reasonably level site. Chips/ mulch would then be loaded up in to a trailer to be carted to customer that requires the chips/ mulch after drying out,for there biomass boiler. I wonder if the economics would ever stack up if such a machine existed. I ask the question after seeing brushwood just going to rot after large trees have been extracted. Of course as many woods are on steep hillsides my idea would be curtailed in many instances because of the steepness of the ground making it inacsessible for my imaginary machine.
  8. I think I will do some research into the Acrartex 406 Personal Locator Beacon, as that might be the way to go. What ever one uses tree canopy always going to reduce effectiveness of signal.
  9. Do any of you that work alone or as a group in deep valleys where there is "NO PHONE SIGNAL" , have a GPS/Satellite safety device,or even satellite phone to call emergency services if you have an accident. If so I would like to know what you have,it is one of those situations where you have equipment but hopefully you never have to use it. Please, sensible answers only as this is a serious situation. I did not really know which forum subject I should have posted this at,so please suggest otherwise.
  10. Thank you all for your very useful replies. Stupidly I forgot to explain that although trunks are on steep bank we would cut them up into 2mtr lengths to winch down the hill, to flatter ground, using a divert pulley in case of a runaway. I move the lengths to our yard,by loading them into an old 10ton grain trailer, with a JCB telehandler.
  11. I am considering buying a chainsaw with a long bar for cutting up large diameter Beech tree trunks that I have been offered free of charge on steep banks !!!.I would like to hear from any of you that use long chain saw bars/chains to deal with large diameter trunks ,are they worth the investment and effort now wood is starting to get short. Thank you.
  12. With wood consumption increasing worldwide for whatever purpose.Do you think that this ever increasing consumption is sustainable on a global basis? We can plant as many trees as we like but they are all going to grow relatively slowly, wherever in the world they are grown.
  13. Is the ever increasing "Consumption of Wood Worldwide" for whatever purpose sustainable/unsustainable? I say we can plant as many trees as we like worldwide but they are all going to grow pretty slowly, slower than we are using trees? Yes/No.
  14. Thank you all for your advice, very much appreciated.Very serious dangerous consequences if one gets it wrong. Will not be doing the winching till slope dries off, as being slippery will certainly make things even more dangerous.
  15. Due to lack of access we need to winch some large windblown Beech down a steep bank. Please can any one give us some tips on how to do this safely, thank you in advance.Should we have the winch cable at angle across the bank to try and avoid a straight down hill out of control slide developing?
  16. Just wondering if any one who has applied for FFIS Grant funding can remember approx how long it took ,DEFRA/RDPE to process your application. Sent mine in on March 6th, and had an e mail April 2nd to say it was being processed.Have phoned for a progress report to no avail, all the guys told me is that the applications are sent to offices all over the country to be appraised.
  17.

  18. Thanks guys for your info,I best get splitting the beech ASAP. Great deal of truth in the saying "you don't get ought for nought."
  19. I have the opportunity of having some beech windblown,in a situation where I put in my labour and my payment is the wind blown timber,BUT I have never got on very well with Beech. Does Beech need splitting to dry out as soon as it is felled compared with Ash,to dry out. Seems to me as Beech will never dry out unless split compared to Ash. Thank you for any replies.
  20. Thanks guy's,really useful info, for a new 63yr old boy much appreciated.!!!
  21. A landowner has kindly said I can use their Botex forwarding trailer/crane unit,to move some wind blown.I would appreciate any basic tips on using one for the first time. I do not wish to tip it over!!! Thank you.
  22. Thankyou Brushcutter, for the info. Are there any particular faults that the Valtra 8150/8350 are prone to, reliability of engine/gearbox at 6000hrs plus??
  23. At which time of year do hardwood trees especially Beech and Oak have the most amount and least amount of sap in them.
  24. Is their much difference in build quality and performance of Riko,Posch or Binderberger 30tonne Horizontal splitters.
