  3. Sorry to hi jack this thread slightly but thought i'd ask it here rather than start another similar thread. I'm self employed and have just started my first year but am uncertain of when i actually pay my tax i've heard its not for another year and a bit???? is this correct? my business year is exactly the same as the financial year btw. and i pay my tax and class for stamp at this time i believe?? 7. i'm just in the process of ordering a new computer and noticed it comes with windows 8. Everyone i've spoken to says to try and get windows 7 as 8 is hard to get used to. What are peoples opinions on this?? Cheers, James
  8. Still researching a new computer and have been recommended that hp are a better computer than dell and have found this one for offer at the moment: HP Pavilion P6-2371ea Desktop PC with 2 year warranty - HP Store UK Looks to have a very good spec and the price seems good too.. What do you guys think?
  9. Do you mind me asking how much you charged for that job in total? I'm looking to do more landscaping as its something i enjoy doing! Really nice job by the way! James
  10. I hit the toe of my boot the other day it went straight through to the steel toe cap which was a bit worrying i thought the kevlar or whatever is in them should of stopped the chain before it got to the steel toe cap... They were haix protector pros by the way.
  11. Some good points again! al but which one off the shelf??? there are soo many different makes/models different specs etc etc!
  12. Cheers for the help guys. Do you guys think its worth try to improve my current computer then or not bother and just buy new?
  13. What made you go for the precision model over the others and which precision model have you got? there seems to be 3 different ones for each model! which is confusing!
  14. Thanks for all the help guys! Dell seems like a pretty good call then, i'll stick with what i know! havn't used windows 7 or 8 so i don't know which is better, but judging by most comments it seems 7 is easier to use. These are the computers that i've been looking at but i don't really know what the differences are. Can anyone shed any light on them? Dell Business PC, Desktop & Computer Workstations | Dell UK
  15. I know this is a bit of a random thing to be asking but i need a new computer for doing the invoices etc for work. I have had a dell desktop for over 12 years and don't know anything about what to buy i'm tempted to go for another dell as this one has lasted so well but don't know if their any good anymore? I'm going to go for another desktop as they have more memory and should last longer? But just don't know exactly which one to buy! So any help or recommendations would be great!
  16. True but what do you guys think is a decent/reasonable wage for a self employed person/sole trader?
  17. This is a good thread! As someone who is about starting out in business, doing mainly hedgecutting work small tree work and grounds maintenance. What would you suggest i should be turning over each day? The kit i'll be using won't include a chipper but i will have chainsaws, ppe climbing kit, hedgecutters, mowers etc etc.
  18. Just wandering how you price a job like that? I am looking to do more forestry jobs and have a small thinning job i need to price up. Great work with the system your using to pull the wood out btw!
  19. We already have 2 long term contracts for this year which i will be taking on so that will give me approx 3-4 full days work at lest a week. So i believe the goodwill is worth something. Again i won't know whether i'll keep these contracts the following year, but at least for the first year i know i've got work.
  20. Thanks doobin! well to start off with whats a transit 56 plate with around 85,000 on the clock worth? I'll make a list of all the other equipment and see what its worth. But to be perfectly honest we are on very good terms and he has ben VERY good to me over the past 5 years i've worked for him (part time at college then he offered me a full time job when i left).
  21. Treedom hopefully i'll still be fit and want to carry on working when i reach retirement age! As i believe its good to keep active and fit otherwise you'll just do nothing and get lazy lol!
  22. Thanks desertrat0201. Hopefully in 2 or 3 years down the line i'll be ok and able to take a reasonable wage (probabaly not a lot but still a wage!) and have my own little company. Which is what i want in life! I accept this year will be hard and i'll probabaly be working at least 6 days a week every week for little/no money at all. I won't lie it does worry me about it all being my responsibility and worrying about having enough work etc how do you cope with things like that?
  23. Thanks everyone! The interest rates on loans are fantastic over 5 years i'll be paying an extra 4ishk alone on interest so as cannonball said i'll take a small wage to start with and concentrate on paying back the loan. Does it matter how much your wage is to qualify for your state pension? Thanks again!
  24. Cheers for the help guys! I need to take out a loan as i'll be taking over the small business i currently work for so will be buying all the good will and equipment etc. So unfortunately i'll have to borrow, but at least i know i already have the work there.
  25. Its more a thinning operation tbh. The trees are only 15years old and i imagine they won't be that big. The local parish council has been informed already by the owner. Will the district council need to be informed as well?
