No way I’d be doing any demolition with it. They’ll have some bigger kit for that job I’d expect. It’s fine travelling with the cab up a bit, she’s a nice machine to Operate, looking forward to a shakedown with the Stump Grinder tomorrow, it sounds a beast! Eddie. Hopefully this works, video of the first spin up.

Liebherr out this week, parking in this stunning building that’s sadly getting flattened next week, but made for some nice shots. Hard to scale some of this stuff, but when you’re double or even triple cutting with a 3ft bar in the Grapple Saw, they’re decent lumps. Hard hat gives a bit of scale to one of my better double cuts!? Eddie.

The only reason that Mecalac is setup like that is to get some much needed extra reach from it. Throwing a grab up onto something for an assisted fell already puts a force in place before a cut is made that’s not ideal for any form of proper control. As for forces in rotators, spec them right, buy quality and there’s no issues. Piston rotators are used on most of the Intermercato grabs you’ll see about, and these will allow movement should any overload occur. Worm drives are different, and I wouldn’t recommend any worm drive that wasn’t Excavator specific, mainly actual Tiltrotator units are the best if you want to avoid issues. All said for an economic option, especially where you want to easily gain some extra reach, I’d have a free swinging grab on site over nothing anytime. Combine it with a live heal if possible in the mount and you’ll get a nice bit of extra reach, plus a lot more control over longer material when required. This is a lovely job, I’d have kept the heal a bit shorter, and gained myself 600mm or so extra reach with no issues. A couple of lugs for the grab to grip onto when travelling around site would finish off such a design nicely. Eddie.

Can you maybe get a snatch block with a toothed wheel inside for the chain? Probably unnecessary but may work slightly better. And for cleaning the chain as it comes in I just envisaged a lovely DIY setup involving a nearby stream, a pressure washer and lots of duct tape ? It’s never going to hurt anything with a decent quality ordinary block I’d have thought, just you’ll have to get a decent size for the chain to sit in properly. I was more thinking of the actual box the chain lands into, this will soon get full of debris I’d expect, so worth checking you can get good access. It’s hardly a ships anchor chain and will power out, so I can’t see it being much worse than fighting a normal wire rope that doesn’t power out, especially when someone has decided the cheapest rope about as good as they strain telegraph poles with would do the job nicely! I thought the main advantage of this Winch was the fact it’s Hydraulic Driven, with the Motor acting directly onto the chain. It means you can mount it easily on the front and rear of a Tractor with no need for the PTO. Handling chain is easy, you can choke it back on itself or hook a shortening clutch on at any point. I don’t know how you go on with Snatch Blocks for redirecting, but I’d assume no issues? My only concern when I looked at these was access to clean the inevitable shite the chain will carry back with it when conditions are bad. Eddie. -
Had a JCB 65r1 cutting me a route in this week for a long reach Komatsu I was on. They’ve had this Lipa Flail a few years now and give it absolute hell. However it’s still going strong, and what surprised me was the monster flails in it! These were some serious lumps, no wonder it was doing so well. I think it’s a brand Joe Turner sells? The JCB was some tool, lovely cab, plenty of flow for the Mulcher and doing the job no issues. Just trying to de-veg an old drainage scheme for further investigation, so needed the reach, but real tight access, so the JCB had to tidy the bench in for me, plus reinstate on the way out. Forestry winch recommendations please

Tajfun with the Automatic stop when the wire is spooled back in and Radio Remote would be my choice. Once you’ve gone radio remote and auto stop, there’s no going back. Quality rope on the Tajfun too. Eddie. -
Certainly doesn’t look like a scam, one phonecall to Jcc Group John Craig will almost certainly tell anyone interested all they want to know, as that’s going to be one of his Engcon setups/installs with the SVAB control system. Someone has spent some serious money there, and is clearly passionate about the details. Look at the extra grips on the outside of the joysticks, and even the Ec-Oil blocks have their additional yellow protective covers on. Wouldn’t be my first choice of brand, but would certainly be a great entry into the concept, and all the kit would transfer over if you moved onto another brand in the future. Eddie.

Yes hope their Hired Plant policy is well up, that’s a new cab going on, and 2/3 the rate per week until it’s available again for hire. That’s the pitfalls of putting them out at £350 a week and hoping at least someone has an idea what they’re doing with it!? Eddie.

Spotted this on Mascus, bit of an unusual one?? Basically a new Kobelco SK75, guarded up, will take loads of different pad options up to probably 900mm without mods. Has a Steelwrist with Control System and Top Hitch setup too, so some serious money been spent. Yes they do and in one famous incident in the not so distant past someone took it upon themselves to lighten a chipper to get it under the weight. The fact they took the covers off, all them spinning around bits caused Network Rail to have a sense of humour failure for some reason, and the whole possession got binned at great expense! Rail work, you couldn’t buckrake £50 notes as fast into a silage clamp as they can waste it! Eddie.

It’s obviously in my mind, and I’m working on a setup for the realistic max capacity. Problem with me is I’m crap at the business side, I’m just a kit junkie and can’t stop trying to put together another better solution. Great if I can just find someone to put work in front of me to deliver. Just building them gets more attractive daily! Eddie.

Great shot of the Liebherr in action last year. Built for the job and for the price of a couple of good teams a day can do it effortlessly and safely. Work has just dried up completely for it in this application,so just rethinking what attachment I can put on the end of it to get more utilisation. Eat the green one for breakfast!? Eddie.

Be about 600mm cut and around 1000kg, I’d expect. It’s not reinventing the wheel stuff, it just shows you can be sold solutions that will work, but can they cut it when really put to work. Tiltrotator installs is one thing I know inside out, and it still pains me to see what some guys are sadly paying for and expected to take to work. It’s improved dramatically over the past few years as more knowledge is shared and guys get to know what to look out for. Eddie.

It would be upside down so to speak and water/dirt would get in it. You can see it clearly now from the cab, but version 2 has the side plate extended to give the motor protection and that’s being put back on with a cover for the small pipe. The cab side is fine now, just the details on the other side, run it and then tidy it up on a finished design. Eddie.

Just some images of the evolution on an Intermercato Grapple Saw for a 13 tonne Doosan over the past 12 months. Basically when it arrived there was virtually no room to add the extra valve /pipework required into the head bracket. The worm drive motor was sticking out at the rear blind side for the Operator, begging to be knocked off. It generally looked like an octopus was bursting out of it! Several other bits and pieces in how it performed, not something you’d want to take to work. Version two threw up issues again, simply because who did the mods didn’t take the time to test it. The two position type head bracket I prefer was thrown in the mix here. Time to send it up over the border to the man who sorts all my kit, and the latest version is now back at work. Getting there now, going to be one last version after this to give it the production look/finish and hopefully an off the shelf unit that’s fit for work, tested on the front line. Plenty of other setups out there, but many have had great success with the Intermercato range, and it would be nice to get a readily available, cost effective option that actually works real world. The Trolleys are rated for the task, this has been about a few years now, and simply does the job with the least amount of issues. Anything Rail involves a level of compliance and rightly so, start involving larger kit, self propelled etc that can’t easily be recovered come any issues and it’s getting expensive real quick! You will find that Rail won’t readily embrace any innovation, it’s just flood it with men mentality, they can always be packed up and sent elsewhere or home at worst. Having kit on the job and stood down for one piece of paper or some chancer who was supposed to travel half way around the country to supervise a shift, gets expensive real quick! Eddie.
