  1. i try to make as much of my own kit as possible as alot of the stuff available is not built to what i want and is usually out of my budget the double splitter is based on an old dumper chassis and is powered by a 20hp honda engine converted to gas

  3. mca kingston for me wouldn't buy the green ones as they aren't uv stabilized(apparantly they use recycled material that can't be uv stabilized) ped
  4. i'll take a pic next week when i'm delivering i've made mine level at the top but the higher the pivot point the better i only leave the tailgate on for spilt logs as rings and lengths will jam up
  5. why is a drop down tail gate better than a top hinged tail gate, my tipping trailer works far better with a top hinged tailgate than it did with the standard drop down one
  6. if you need any more pics let me know if your redesigning it i would lower the ram:make the part of the push plate that slides on the beam longer:when you fabricate the knife slot it into the beam so you get alot more area that is welded(a good weld doesn't fail its the metal around it that does):use 25mm plate for the knife:use cap head bolts as the're stronger as standard than hex head bolts i would also put a pressure gauge on so you can see what pressure your running at and enable you set the pressure relief valve

  8. i ended up taking the adustable knife off as i bent it (15mm plate that ram goes to about 8t) the slide plate and top of the beam are 25mm plate the foot plate is 60mm thick(two pieces of 30mm welded together) took some upto date pics today
  9. to reinforce it weld flat bar across the web at high stress areas (where the ram mounts the push plate starts and around the knife ) as regards the twisting if a ram of that size bottoms out then 35t of force has to go some where, generally the beam flexes till it bends once it bends the forces either side of the knife which are never equal will cause the knife to exert force 90 degrees to the beam and cause twist and buckling only pics on computer are these will take some better ones tommorrow
  10. no offence but i don't think that knife will work very well as logs will try to twist to the side (may even fly out with a bit of force)resulting in alot of force being transfered to the beam and probally twisting it beam is not the best material to make a splitter from universal column is far better and stronger(but still needs stiffeners across the web to stop twist) what are you going to power it with a 35t ram is going to be fairly slow with a petrol engine combo and will test all your welds if you max it out it all depends on what you plan on splitting if your doing knotty stuff a single knife would be better as trying to get a stuck piece off a 4 or 6 way can be a pain in the bum i hope you take my post as constructive not as a negative if you want some pics of how i make mine i'll post some
  11. why are all the horizontal splitters seen so far all at such a low working height ,you're back would certainly know about it using them for a couple of days
  12. sold more this year than the year before but found i sold alot more bags than tipped loads due to people not sure of what the weather was going to do and not wanting to outlet in large loads because of financial uncertainty i did find that out of the calls from non recommended people that i only supplied 50% of them early season due to more competition selling freshly split cheap logs although alot of them rang back after getting a load that wouldn't burn
  13. standard sankey holds 1.2 cubic meters with 2' greedy boards that works out at 2.8 meters, so well cheap also your springs won't last long with that amoumt of weight
  14. used to have to change the front one every year, put a new prop on and its been ok since so maybe its your prop out of balance
  15. i'd keep your ram low and level,low as it reduces twist in you beam and level to reduce uneven wear in your slider plate even though your using column it will still need web stiffeners and the front flange reinforcing normal steel will be alright for the wedge
  16. the ones flow fit sell are the haldex type and are two pumps in one ie high volume at low pressure then when more pressure is needed they kick down to low flow at high pressure the pump in the picture looks to be a standard gear pump (if it produces 72l/m @ 3600 rpm it going to be in the region of a 20cc/rev pump)with a 13hp engine the biggest pump you can use with a reasonable pressure is about 8cc/rev to run that pump at 220 bar you'd need over 35hp
  17. at that flow rate i presume your using a haldex type twin pump ,if thats the case you'll need a tank of 72lt or more(or a oil cooler) also your return line filter,hoses and spool valve need to be capable of that flow i've the same engine and pump size on my road tow splitter and have found that it gets too hot when used continously thats why i'm going back to the standard gear pump that i originally built it with
  18. never used box section (i use 6x6 medium weight column with plenty of web stiffeners in) but i'd go for the 6" if i was to use box not sure if 6mm is thick enough though depends on size length and working pressure of ram
  19. build it to suit the size of logs you process ie big rings verticle splitter with foot plate on the floor, up to 12" horizontal at waist height with large work table a couple of pics of mine
  20. we've got 4 3 phase tigs from 180amp upto 400amp a 315amp mig a 240v 160amp mig and an old 140 amp stick set

  22. the slides are made from unitrack sourced from city electrical with adjustable brackets made out of alloy angle which screw into the end of the log and threaded bar in between the rails i think they were about a tenner for them the remote throttle is not connected as i need a longer cable and an old air filter cover as the part that goes over the trigger fouls on the cover and i don't want to cut up the one thats on the saw (if anybodies got an old ms880 air filter cover spare i'd be intrested) the part that goes over the trigger is off a floor saw attachment for a stihl saw and the handles are from a bike shops scrap bin
  23. got my mill out today as a log customer wanted a simple bench (just a log with a slab of the top)had a lump of elm which will take a couple of years to season if i log it and a piece of ash that showed good colour this is what i found the finish isn't as good as i would have liked on the ash as the logs were too close to each other and the saw got stopped by the other log(must get some ripping chain as well)
  24. saw that before thread was deleted imo your splitter looks ok for straight grained timber but on big knarly lumps you've got a good chance of bending the foot plate and/or twisting the beam not saying its badly made more that it could have been designed stronger, the same could be said for many splitters i've seen sorry for derail as to original post pto pump would be better
  25. know a few lads with a flap in the chip box, lift flap to reverse then drop back down to chip into(no help when chip box is full though)
