  12. Locals of the 'elder' persuasion :001_rolleyes. Ex councillors, Modbury community groups who do voluntary work coppicing, clearing bridleways etc. Nobody under the age of 60 from what I could see. The aim is to survey the landscape including significant trees over the 3 year period. Get landowners, locals, managers etc involved. There will probably be grants made available to enable people to get into the schools to set up projects....educating the kids about trees, landscape etc. Unfortunately I had a 50th in N. Devon on the eve o missed what promised to be a fine talk by Jeremy Barrell. Heres a blog from the day. Hercules project

  14. Photo's from last weekends visit to Modbury, S. Devon as part of the HERCULES project. Really interesting landscape and a good turnout from the locals wishing to learn more about their cultural heritage and landscape. Hercules project "The "Sustainable Futures for Europe's Heritage in Cultural Landscapes" project (HERCULES) seeks to empower public and private actors to protect and sustainably manage cultural landscapes that possess significant cultural, socio-economic, historical, natural and archaeological value, at a local, national and Pan-European level. Funded through the Seventh Framework Program (FP7) of the EU, the project assembles 13 partners from European Universities and research institutes, small and medium-sized enterprises and non-governmental organisations to develop a holistic approach that incorporates diverse stakeholder perspectives to appropriately address landscape changes. While the adoption of the European Landscape Convention (ELC) has attracted much attention from the sciences, policy makers and the general public, cultural landscapes are in need of further action to ensure their continued existence."
