    id please?

Found today between buttress roots of a big old beech. The outer white fruiting body seemed quite fresh......sure its a common one but me still a novice on the fungal fruiting front.
  6. leave it alone it was better in its original form:confused1:
  7. Just plodding on......doing the woodlands module mainly. How about you? Will PM ya later when this 3 year old isnt hanging off my ears!
  8. There's a definate market for a tome of such depth also. Have thought about this for ages. A compendium of sorts. How different trees react to pruning, soil preferences, strengths and characteristics of woods. Diseases blah blah.....anecdotes/advice/photographs from the mouths of those who encounter trees day in day out....the Arbs!!! Yes it would be a biggie but no more so than whats out there size wise already. Its something I'm quite passionate about.....Could call it 'ARBTALK'. ? What do you think.? Fancy a challenge?
  9. Rogers Trees and Shrubs | Trees and Shrubs Pictures and Reference covering both hardy and tender trees and shrubs The only one i know of. Sure you know it yourself anyway David
  10. THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF GREEN WOODWORKING This is a great book. From choosing the right tools, wood etc to learning all the basics. A must for any green woodworker
  11. Dont watch it then! i know its important to keep up with the news but wait until you've woken up! Listen to some tunes in the morning....it works!
  12. How's things Giles? Have you been studying hard? I'm finding it hard to know what to put my time into until exam results. Just been doing some light reading on woodland related topics really. Something i'm interested in and its revision too.

How's work? It's been a killer of a week in this heat but still a damn sight better than working in an office block i suppose.

    Take Care

  13. Thanks. I've got a canon G10...very nice camera.
  14. On a big Beech. About 7 or 8 fruiting bodies. On the inner border of Richmond Park. Situated on a footpath although since the construction of the new Tamsin trail it is one of the less used areas of the park. As it is situated on the border there are back gardens adjacent to the boundary wall. Have just carried out a 25% crown reduction on it. Not the ideal time of year i know but its on the safety works list !
  15. Early resinaceum? I think so.

    bats!

Surely sticking an endoscope in is better than cutting them out? Its impossible to to get a licensed bat handler in to inspect every tree we work in. Its also a miniscule chance of sticking into the middle of a roost. But it may help to detect signs of bat use etc?

    bats!

Went on a bat course yesterday. It was a very interesting and informative day especially as its focus was geared towards bats and trees/arboriculture. Got me thinking about the extent of the problem with regards bats and Arb work. Have may of you come across roosts in trees you are about to work in? If so what kind of tree/location etc? Have you known what to do upon finding a bat etc? I cut a roost out a few weeks ago. It was in a big old Sycamore. No signs of bat use....scratchin marks, droppings etc. The limb the roost was in didnt even have any evidence of cavities until cut. Strapped it back in the tree so hopefully alls well. Dont worry its all above board and reported etc. In the park I work in there are a great number of bats of all species and this is only the 3rd time in 4 years that we have come across them and considering we can be working on 3 - 4 Veteran Oaks a day through the winter thats quite low I think. Will be pushing to get an endoscope for future works as I think it could prove invaluable considering the cost. So what about everybody else?
  18. just me being slightly pedantic.....sorry.
  19. Reduction AND fell of dead white willow? What's that all about David?
  20. for somebody who is very quick to call people retarded, your grammar and general communication skills are dire!
