  1. I worked on rigs in Egypt & Libya some years ago, it was mainly 4 weeks on, 4 weeks off (thats unless your relief didnt turn up !). Its important to remember that almost everyone working on the rig will be a contractor, or subcontractor, so there are literally hundreds, if not thousands of companies worldwide supplying services that you could apply to.
  2. This time of the year you may well need The Field Studies Council guide to identifying trees in winter.
  3. I would recommend the Agroforestry research Trust Agroforestry research trust fruits nuts seeds plants publications They could give you expert advice on species/varieties for your location and soil type, plus sell you the trees
  4. If its for indoor woodwork then I give it a coat of sanding sealer and then wax it
  5. A fantastic place. I worked there over 30 years ago when i was in my early 20's. Spent all my spare time exploring Cairo. Dressed in jeans & tee shirt and with dark hair & a heavy suntan I walked unhindered through streets that cant have changed in a thousand years. Meanwhile the obvious tourists were plagued by begging children & itinerant street sellers.
  6. I know a contractor who sorted his non paying customer by putting a plough on his tractor & working over his lawn for him.
  7. Sell it for veneer, apparently the Germans buy loads Put it on Ebay, or at least the German one
  8. Mainly joinery /door & window frames
  9. My wife once badly spooked Bob Geldoff. One New Year she about 10 years ago she was was in the same video hire shop in Faversham & then a few days later she went to pick up a friends kid from a private school in Battersea & old Bob was there too picking up his daughters. Must have thought he was being stalked ! Mind you, once saw Bob in Faversham market & mistook him for a tramp.
  10. Rain? You must be joking Here in the Sussex high Weald not enough rain to cause runoff for months. Ground cracking up, ponds dried up.
  11. After giving us a talk (and free lunch) at the Weald Woodfair the FC took us out to see Nick Hilton of WoodWise Forestry and the tree harvester that he had just acquired with a FC grant harvester
  12. Seem to have stirred up something here. I dont know about other regions, but I see they have opportunities such as "a new or existing forestry (contractors)" "Micro Enterprise" (employs less than 10 persons/less than 2 million euro turnover) Capital investment in equipment or buildings, Adding value/new products/woodfuel supply chain/improve efficiency/marketing. 3 years accounts, (or business plan), 3 quotes Or for woodland owners "Improving economic value", "no minimum size" I think that they are making a real effort to offload this grant money
  13. They have a track record of shooting innocent people dead when carrying a chair leg, posing a threat when standing stark naked & unarmed, or even not looking like a terrorist
  14. I dont know what is happening in other regions, but in the Southeast the FC are virtually begging contractors & forest owners to apply for grants. They have got millions to give away & its all EU money, so I guess the FC will get a bollocking if they dont use it ! If you are in the Southeast check out South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) Grants of 40-50% on forestry equipment to improve your business. Work out a rough costing & bang in an Expression of Interest form
  15. I agree its extortion, but if you signed up for the FC talk you gt in free. Also I didnt mention it before (for fear of being accused of being subversive), but there is actually a public bridleway that runs straight through the site. I only discovered it about five years ago when being in hyperactive envirofriendly mode I decided to cycle over there. Suddenly found myself in the middle of it. So do a Tebbitt & get on your bike (or horse)
  16. Anyone going to it ? Also, the FC are giving a talk "Wood, fuel for the future" Free lunch Need to book in advance Who said that there was no such thing as a free lunch ?
  17. What is wrong with the time honored method of using a woodcarving gouge and mallet ? If you cant do it then find somebody who can.
  18. Well, being in my late 50's there is only a slim chance of my being around in 2050. Guess you youngsters will talk about the old days of those awesome petrol chainsaws, how people had energy to waste on stumpgrinding etc and then go back to sharpening your axes !
  19. The Government has said that household carbon based energy use must be cut by 90% by the year 2050. Any ideas how how this could happen ? Who will pay for it / Ground source heat pump £15,000+ Log boiler £10,000 ? Domestic woodchip boiler, dont even think about it as a single dwelling option by the time you have considered logistics & storage. How will ypor chainsaws be powered ? petrol will probably be more expensive than whisky Not forgetting chain oil, 2 stroke mix and diesel. Back to the old days of axes & 2 man saws ? I see it now! battery powered chainsaw and loading wood onto a converted milkfloat.
  20. I own some woods in the middle of the Sussex countryside, but being bordered by a B road causes endless problems including vandalism, fly-tipping & wholesale cutting & theft of trees. . The concept of owning woods in a town sounds like a complete & utter nightmare.
  21. "Andy Mason" , it was probably that ex squaddie who writes under the name of "Andy McNab". Can you give a description?
  22. Yes, Phytopthora is actully Greek for "plant killer" In fact my potatoes have got it as well (Phytopthora Infestans), potato blight. Interested to know what methods you use to disinfect equipment after use on diseased trees in order to prevent spreading it to others ?
  23. The Biomass Energy Centre has only just launched this list. You should at least be talking to them to make sure they will not be expanding it to cover logs and agree on what each will cover to prevent a load of duplicated effort.
  24. Got this in a newsletter from the FC yesterday. Is yours the same, or something different ? Nation-wide Directory of Woodfuel Suppliers Launched: Putting Local Woodfuel on the Map The search for locally produced wood chips and pellets has got easier thanks to a new map-based list of fuel suppliers. An online directory of woodfuel suppliers features companies’ details and products and allows users to find local suppliers. The Biomass Energy Centre, working with the Forestry Commission’s regional Woodfuel Co-ordinators, has compiled the database of woodfuel suppliers for each region in England. If you are a woodfuel supplier and would like to be included on the list please complete a registration form at http://www.biomassenergycentre.org.uk
  25. I would clamp the Hazel rod between two straight lengths of timber. In fact you could screw cross small pieces to the timber to clamp them together & hold down the Hazel rod at the same time. Then simply run it though a table saw with the blade lowered to the appropriate depth. Make several passes with the saw & adjust the guide if you need it wider.
