  1. Sounds big enough! Mine has an 80mm bore, i think i'm right in saying with a classic tractor i'll get 5 tons out of it and a mordern tractor i should get about 9 maybe 10 ton, but as long as the blade is sharp i'm hoping it wont need that sort of power!
  2. Well.... the cylinder is the most costly thing, but a control valve is about £60, pipes with all the connectors is about £80, the bearings were £7.50 for 10, the steel propably cost me £100/150 but I did have some of it already and quite a bit came from the scrapyard! if you can get your hands on the hydraulics then thats the most expensive part of the log splitter! Hope that helps! How big is the cylinder?
  3. Hi, as promised here are some pics of my log splitter at the moment, still got a bit of work to do on it, but its not too far off! I'll put some on when its working and painted up! Cheers Dave.
  4. Thanks mate, i'll give him a pm! (happy new year by the way)
  5. Cheers Apbell, well thats good news, and i know its only a BTEC, but its a start!
  6. Hi all, Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on the National Award in Forestry and Arboriculture at Reaseheath as i'm thinking of going on it. Its only a one year course and I dont think its been running long! Any info would be greatly recieved! Cheers Dave
  7. Cheers for the suggestions! I've decided to put 20 bearings underneath as well as a bit of box section in the middle to stop any bend in the bottom, this is the cheap option as I got 10 bearings for £7.50 . In theory the bearings will easily take the load, just have to see how/if the plate bends under the pressure! The splitter is half built, and weighs quite a bit already! I'll put some pics on soon!
  8. We're selling a record amount of christmas trees this year which is good......down side is i've got to dig more Nordman are selling really well same as Fraisers, but scotty pines are not doing so well!
  9. Well christmas trees are selling well so far even if the prices have gone up!
  10. I was thinking maybe I could make the bearing sprung so they move below the blocks when the pressure is applied?!?! I was going to go for steel on steel as its simple and should wear slowly! I was tempted to put some grease nipples on, but they may get damaged. Funny you should say that, i've got two leading edges that i'm going to weld together and add two pieces of angle to help the splitting! Have to put some heat into it to make it strong enough!
  11. Neat idea Andy, i think that could be a very good sollution! Also with regards to the slider, is steel on steel good enough or would a nylon insert be a better idea? Cheers Dave.
  12. Hi all, I've just started building a vertical log splitter, i've made the main frame, but i'm starting to get worried that the rotating table is not strong enough. The table is 600mm in diameter and 10mm thick, it is supported on 6 ball bearings in a piece of box in the centre. I expect the splitter to produce about 9.6 tons of force. Do you think it will break? I have thought of putting steel under the part where the blade will concentrate the pressure so to reduce the risk of the table bending? Any suggestions/ideas would be very welcome. Cheers Dave.
  13. Unlucky mate, good thing the saws were locked together!
  14. I've been looking on ebay, but nothing yet!
  15. Just seen they've nicked one of my tomato plants
  16. Cheers mate, you have to wonder where they get rid of that sort of equipment....
  17. I've just had my hydraulics stolen, one step forward, one step back.
  18. Hi everyone, I was broken into last night (Stoke- on-Trent area), had my hydraulics for my uni log splitter dissertation stolen along with some gears for a 100 year old lathe and other odds and sods. The hydraulics consisted of two "sets" of hoses (2x 1m and 2x 2m with 90deg connections and connections for the tractor), enough for two log splitters and a control valve, so if any of you see or hear of any floating about please PM me, cheers. Dave.
  19. This is the one i'm going to make for my uni project, just collecting the materials!
  20. A nice bowl of cereals for me and a mug of tea, sets the day off nicely!
  21. Normal days work for me....
  22. Are you following in the steps of Richard Hammond with your dental work steve??
