  1. I just knew there was a positive side to every situation in life....Thanks mate:001_cool:
  2. Hi Guys n Gals, Well, the deed is done. I put my notice in at work Friday, I have to take care of my Dad as he is now 88yrs old & needing help with day to day living. I will be taking him for an assesment next week for a powered wheel chair so we can get him out n about. He has been housebound for the last week & although he is in good spirits, it is driving him mad not being able to go into town every day & see all his mates. Only problem I see with him having a power chair as opposed to a mobility scooter as he has now is, will this have an adverse effect on his tree climbing abilities when I get me Arb business up & running? Aww c'mon chaps....He's hardly gonna be any use to me if I can't work him properly.....Or am I being just a little hard on him:sneaky2: You decide
  3. Thanks again guys, Tommer9, Yep, certainly IS heavy but great for carving. Still not decided about the mouth though, I made a minature one from a piece of 1"x0.5" pine a while ago & it looked good so I went for the 'upgrade'. Hell of a jump from that to a railway sleeper doncha fink? Bit like knocking up a 6x4 shed in your back yard then deciding to go straight to building a full scale copy of the Taj Mahal.
  4. Latest pic. I was wondering about the mouth as some of them don't seem to have one & they are weird things anyway. Thoughts? Thanks for the encouragement guys.
  5. First pic, an old railway sleeper apparently made from jarrah wood. I thought I'd give it a go.

  8. Mark, This is Dean we're talking about here......Or 'unlucky Alf as he is known in some circles. They would probably get a conviction & bring back hanging on a one-off basis just for poor ol' Deano. Show your support for Dean by calling his helpline on: 0800 aww- bugger.
  9. Thanks mate, As I say, I am limited in my choices now as there is still a problem with my knees & hips. Arthritic type of pain, & I do a lot of walking at work, so when I'm finished I am ready for home. Even though I like my current job, I can't see me being able to do it forever. I have a couple of other options in the pipeline too but they are not for here. I have learned a lot from this site & you tube & the like. I do want to do chainsaw carving & have started on something which I will put on here if it turns out right. If not, none of you will ever see it.
  10. ay up shrekie lad, thanks for that mate. I do valet cars for people & I do charge for my time. One of my bosses says "You charge how much?" To which I say, " You want my spare time? you pay for it." All the owners have gone away happy up to now & I do get repeat customers. I would get public liability insurance if taking up any kind of tree work. I see what you're saying about working for nowt, It's also usually the bloke getting the 'freebie' who'll make the biggest stink if it goes wrong. Thanks again buddy. TT:001_smile:
  11. Hi folks, Just a question. As you all know, I have been ill recently & it now looks as if I won't be able to go into a full time job in this industry. However, I do still have my chainsaw & safety gear, so I intend to take the occasional user ticket just to ensure I know what I'm doing. What would that qualify me to do legal-wise? What, if anything, could I charge for? Or can I just limb & buck fallen trees & take the timber as payment? My wife turns green wood, so that would be the reason for the last idea. Thanks in advance for any advice/input. cheers, TT.

    Scary

Hello again mates, Just an update. I asked my Doc if I could go back to work on Monday as I don't feel at all unwell & the joint pains are (just about) gone. She made me promise that I'd take it steady & to go staight back if I feel unwell or the rash or swelling returns. I said I would & I will do as she says cos if it turns out to be a thing called 'stills disease' it is more serious. It seems the current thinking is 'reactive arthritis' due to a virus & may take several more weeks to clear yet. Just thought I'd let you all know as so many of you replied with advice & good wishes. cheers guys, tt.

Joints are rubbish, yes!! Doc been back & had a look n says I may need to go to hospital. (Life gets tedious don't it?) I am moving a little better now & am not feeling flu-ish anymore, so hopefully they may pass on the elephant gun. Doc has gone to raid the bookshelf under the heading of 'Wow, that's unusual'. I thought only the missus & her family had dibs on unusual illnesses:001_tongue:

    Scary

Hi folks, Reporting from sick bay. I went down with flu symptoms on Sunday, o.k.get over it in a couple of days. Stayed at home Monday/Tuesday, went back to work Wednesday. An hour into my shift, I am feeling crap again, finished work a little earlier but my hands had come up in a kind of blistery rash. Now I have swelling & pain in all my joints I had doctor out to me Thursday, which I NEVER do, I will visit a doc whenever I can. The scary bit is, I can't walk:scared1: It seems I have a virus that has sneaked in (I should get blood test results back today). It takes me several minutes to stand up as I can't lean on anything, it hurts so much it's very sary to think that within 1 day I have gone from so active to soooo inactive. I do have views on euthanasia, & they've been reinforced. Call me a wimp if you want, but I could not live in this much pain for years on end. O.K.Grumble over, later folks:001_smile:
  21. I know this is an older thread, but I do feel I have a valid point to make here. I worked in coalmining many years ago, & they always said that the dust you actually see is not the dust that harms you the most. It is the finest dust particles that do the damage. I would reckon on that being true of wood dust also. ALL wood dust is potentially harmful, some, as has been said is carcenogenic while certain ones are halucenogenic, as in make you go wappy. (Explains a lot in my case.) Don't ask which ones cos I can't remember & I don't want you lot going around sniffing timber products. I go on a woodworking site & one experienced turner on there has to strip off & dive straight into the shower to avoid a bad allergic reaction to certain dust/spores. It was said that yew is a baddie, certainly is. Sometimes I have to leave the workshop when my wife, ( herself a woodturner) is sanding down her turnings as my nose & eyes start streaming & the sneazing starts. Just my two p's worth. hope it helps you to think about your lungs a bit more. Cheers people.
  22. I echo all that has been said by previous posters. I have disabled my signature for this particular post as it is not appropriate to this kind of post. Deepest sympathy.
  23. Don't encourage him Joe, it only makes him worse!!
  24. You know, I've never met you, but I still think you're a VERY silly individual. Although my other half says she thinks the same thing about me........She's probably right if I'm honest about it:001_tongue: cheers mate
