  1. Is there not an after market supplier that can supply them? Plus if you uprate them loads then load the vehicle up (i thought it was already rated to 1.2 ton) you may bend the back end of the chassis, or do you have a tipper with a sub frame?
  2. That year had a 2.4 diesel lump in it (or a petrol:scared1:) and as for putting a tipper on, the sky is the limit for tipper conversions from what i can tell, and if you are practically minded, you could do it yourself for under a grand.

    Oak slab

    Started with plane (electric!!) then belt sander then orbital sander. Finished withTung oil- suitable for use near food. Just been down and done a bit more to it, next is the legs etc to fabricate. Need to take a load of oak to my mate for that with surface planer. Got to go and do a quick fell now though in between rainshowers hopefully.

    For hardwoods the general rule of thumb is that once milled the boards are left for a year per inch thickness of board, and a year 'for luck'- a two inch board will want three years..In a very dry climate obviously this will be shorter, and in a wetter climate (Norway??) this should be longer. For softwoods it is about half that. Once you have done this, in order to make funiture it should be kilned, as in this country air drying wil only achieve at best about 20% moisture content, and once brought inside there will be further drying. This having been sain, i have never kilned anything, and generally dont have too much problem. I dont have any heating in this house though or the last two places, so the process of final drying is very slow. If you dont have a kiln then the final stages of drying could just be six months in your house in a not tooo warm place. It is important to paint the grain ends of the wood to combat irregular drying- ends sooner than middle- which will accelerate cracking in the board, usually done before the log is milled. Quarter sawn boards are the most stable too- if the end grain is as close to 90degrees to the plane of the cut- and it is possible to get away with less drying. The figuring, esp. in oak, is the most prominent then too.

    Yeah, i reckon i'll just hook the winch on it and drag it out this time, and stick it on the bandsaw. Rays are good'uns arent they. I try to keep a 1/4 sawn piece out of every log for myself if i can. Chefs prerogative:001_tongue: Been lucky to get a few bits of brown oak over the years.

    When i milled it, i used the 088 with a 48" bar and the alaskan. Each cut took about 15 mnutes of cutting, and after about 3/4 of a cut, i ran out of fuel, and i had to sharpen the chain every cut. I think the only mistake i made was having the bright idea of making a 6" thick slab, wich i ten put at the back corner of the barn where i have no machine access to get it out. It took several of us about 30 minutes to get it in there with levers and rollers etc. Not looking forward to ever touching it again!!

    Cheers guys. Yeah, i had asked about that tree several years in a row- it is by my sistr and brother-in-law's place- as it has been dying back steadly, and i got the call one day that it was coming down and would i like it. It was a mission getting it here are some pics... They left me a 30 tonne swinger to load it. At one point the log rolled sideways on the lorry which was on a slight side slope:blushing: and we tought the lorry was going over. I put another 2ish ton log on the trailer. When we got back and tried to unload it, that 130hp john deer had its rear wheels off the ground with a 950kilo weight on the back. Luckily the lorry tipped it off. The poor lorry, the suspension was down to the stops all the way.

    Oak slab

    Started sanding this oak slab today, have been on it on and off between arbtalk visits. Going to be my kitchen table. It is 39" wide, and was from a beautiful oak from up in devon that i brought back a few years ago and milled with the alaskan mill. First is the log, the others are the table to be.

  13. I seriously reckon you want to get down to a small independent bike shop and go through all the options wuth them. There are about a gazillion possibilities for bits such as bottom brackets. I like hubs etc made by Hope. They arent the cheapest, but they are pretty amazing.
  14. I agree- i almost wish i hadnt seen that. Reminds me of foot and mouth a few years back. It was very nasty working down here then.

  16. spd spd spdity spd. They are awesome Dean, and dont believe the people who say they are dangerous, they are the best thing since sliced bread- efficiency, power transfer and 'perfect circles' are so easy when wearing them. Get back out and spend some more money......
  17. The speedo reads 990107 the other day, but that really is irrelevant except for the chassis, intercooler, wings and axle casings. Everything else is sub 2 yrs old, engine has done 32000, gearbox about 50000, and transfer about 10000 miles.
  18. At the risk of opening up a debate, which is NOT my intention, i dont think they are a 'poor mans landy'. They arent cheap new, and hold their price very well. They are a different machine really. I like to think of the defender as a tractor which has some body panels and electrical bits attached to it for road usability, and always saw my hi-lux as a very capable, ultra reliable, 4x4 car/ pick-up. You should be able to find a very smart and good hi-lux for your budget, which ought to last you some time really. Better than any ford ranger any day, and (sorry john) better than an l200 really. Only my opinion tho.
