  1. Pocket money, Danny? You need to up your prices. Have just taken another 3 orders. This carving is getting busy
  2. Pete and Dean, thanks for the open invite. As a born and bred West yorkshireman, brought up in Keighley, would have loved to come. But am having to work my but off at present to pay for a well deserved french trip. Will have to look you up though when I next visit the Wild family in Keighley. Have a great time. Treewarrior aka John Wild
  3. PLEASE DON'T STAND ON MY PLATE!
  4. I've worked out that if you rough carve a few mushrooms, leave them for a week then sand them up later, they don't seem as hard a job to do. Get a few done and stick them out by your front door. Amazing how many neighbours come along and ask/spread the word. Also, am lucky to have a yard within a farm. The farmer has already sold 3 for me this week and I'm now selling all my crap logs for garden chimneas!
  5. Finished the Monolith. Got a sanding disc for the grinder and boiled linseed oil
  6. Started this business 4 years ago. Have just turned 49 (actually same date as Mr Bullman!!) Don't worry lads, am not upset about the forgotten cards? Have never felt better. Was 18 stone, unfit, smoked and drank like an idiot. Decided to do something with my life. Am fitter, healthier and happier doing trees than any other job I've had. Dropped 4 stone and got fit, mainly due to the climbing exertions. The business is not doing too bad. Have slowly built up a decent list of good clients and feel I can do the job as well as some of the best. As far as age is concerned, If you have the work, and you feel you are not capable/experienced, get someone else in. I have had some fantastic tree surgeons who have given me some great training, advice and encouragement. In return, I have passed over jobs that are far beyond my capabilities and expertise. Respect for all these people on Arbtalk. The market at the moment is not good however. My advice is, get insured, build up your cliientel slowly and don't forget to ask for help.
  7. I do this job because I love it. Make enough to be happy. Have just lost my groundie, Scott after 1 year, he's moved on to something new, Good for him I say. He will be hard to replace. Did the stress thing for a year, hit the bottle big time. Now enjoy climbing and respect and love my wife and daughter. LIFE'S TOO SHORT, LIVE IT!!
  8. £25.00. Just testing the market. Not really sure what to ask. Any suggestions. Just started work on a Monolith for someone as stone one's in Garden centres are about £100.00!
  9. Just bought a stihl carving saw, makes a lot of difference. Have also got orders for 3 mushrooms today.
  10. Can you tell me where I can get one from. make etc
  11. Great music with the video as well.

  13. Decided to have a go, this was my fourth attempt, think I've got this one right? Any advice comments good or bad welcome. Still need to find a way of getting a smooth finish rather than pure sanding. Any advice?
  14. Can you give me a bit more detail about grinding the back of the cutter. Spent ages doing my first mushroom, then sanded it smooth, which took a lot of sandpaper. Is there another way of getting a smooth finish? Getting a decent camera this weekend so will post a picture of finished mushroom.
  15. Dr milroy from Daresbury Stretton
  16. Felled 6 80ft conifers all down in one for the Olympic Team Doctor, Fantastic Garden, and great bloke. Came out halfway through the job and said, leave all the brash, my gardener will tidy up!! Best job in 3 years. Would not have it when I offered to drop the price either:thumbup:
  17. Will keep you in mind if any large jobs come up in East Cheshire Area. Things a bit quiet at the moment though.
  18. Set up your own website. Most of my work comes from searches the client has done on the web. Always ask the client where they found you and how. Most have just googled for a tree surgeon and found me. Another way of geting your website on the 1st page of google etc, is to get everyone you know to do a search for your own site. Don't need yell and don't need stupid cold callers asking to sell me diesel !!!
  19. Well said. Most of us who pride our workmanship get our work through referrals. If you want a professional job doing, hire a pro not a cheap cowboy.
  20. Great, need to get my Blakes ? hitches right
  21. As a very new member and only been in business for a short time. I find it sometimes hard to contribute as I would not want to come across as someone who knows it all. On the other hand, I'm 49, been in the business part-time for 3 years and STILL training and learning. I have my basic CS 30/31 and can climb with some of the best climbers I have met. It is time now for me to get some more tickets, and although I am supposed to have them to climb, fell, prune etc, I agree with others that it is experience foremost that counts, how you complete and finish a job and also, being told by some very experienced climbers that you are good is a great boost. Keep up the talk!!
  22. L200 Warrior, tows my Humbaur Trailer easily and gets me across the farm. Was thinking of getting a truck, but you get stuck on some jobs.
  23. Good old Jo Beau's they're great!
  24. Where you based?
