  1. How likely is it that a 25m, 1.5m+ dbh Eucalyptus 3m from a building is going to cause structural damage? Its not on clay soil so subsidence I think is unlikely. I understand that the chance of direct damage decrease rapidly with distance, but this is a large tree with big root system. The tree belongs to a neighbour, not the building owner and neighbourly relations have already deteriorated over this tree. Whats is the likely root of direct damage occouring from roots either running alonside foundations of growing beneath them? Is it worth excating soil to see what roots are up against the building? If large diameter roots are found against the building then does the tree owner have a duty of care to prune the roots if damage from increment growth is foreseable?
  2. The smaller the lizard, the greater his hopes of becoming a crocodile
  3. Time and again I read your posts about qualifications Tony. Just because someone has a qualification you don't it doesn't mean that they know any more or less that you. We all walk a different path I was in a similar position to you some years back. Great drive and desire to better yourself but without an achedemic qualification to assist moving forward. In hindsight why would my old boss have paid for me to get more qualified when in reality I would more than likely leave his employment. I did study, and online in the evenings because I was skint, 25 on £15K a year as a climber with a new mortgage. It was bloody hard graft I got there and without anybody's help Now that I have a qual it doesn't make me any better than you. You have a wealth of knowledge in areas I am only just delving into. I'm sure my background offers me experiences you may not have had. My qualification whether you like it or not opens doors. I beleive also that I have gained respect of my colleagues, not because of the qualification, but for the work it took to get it. If your selling yourself to a client who you've never met, what are they going to look for to reassure themselves you are the man for the job? Maybe it is time you except that you might have to do and pay for your qualification yourself. I'm sure you can and if you do this you can begin to explore your interests, get paid and let go of this frustration you seem to have with the whole issue
  4. Could it have been here for a while, but just waiting for a warm dry summer?
  5. I'm just thinking of the location. Personaly I'm all for it, but I can only imagine the phone calls the LA switch board lady will be taking on that one.
  6. Perhaps, and I have, but that was in a woodland setting when safe work positioning wasn't posible and platform access wasn't an option. I certainly wouldn't be the first to moan if someone else decided to do it.
  7. No shoots from the cuts. There was quite a bit of small fluffy epicormic before I "pruned" it. This seems to have really taken off since. There is some new epicomic growth on the trunk and new small shoots on the main limbs too which is encouraging. When pruning I removed not only dead wood but some live wood that had some small, struggeling but living foliage at the top. I can only guess that by removing some large diameter limbs that were perhaps hard to sustain, there is more energy available for the lower shoots. Maybe thats just speculation? Makes me think of what Ted Green said about some Oaks being somehow more able to regenerate from dormant buds than others.
  8. This is the tree four months on. Its put on a substantial amount of new growth already and I think its looking pretty good.
  9. The exp boys wouldn't do it without a groundsman with cs38. Do you even have insurance?
  10. I have a 2006 model which has had very little use. I want £5500 for it
  11. Just local contacts to keep haulage costs down It might be worth you finding out who is the main supplier of wood turning blanks in your area then incontact them. We chuck all the yew branches, knarly unions from things like sycamores, weird burrs, and unusual little bits in a corner of the yard and run it all up before xmas and always get a load of cash for the xmas do and then some to share out.
  12. Make sure you get a good price for it. Since firewood has increased in value millers have had to pay out more for timber. I just sold a load of yew, holly and horse chestnut and was quite suprised what it all went for.
  13. Can't you sell the timber locally for milling? The millers down here are asking for Beech at the moment so there must be a market for it
  14. I once found £400 in a pair of chainsaw trousers. I'd just been away for a month and dreading the 1st day back, happy days
  15. Was my 1st trip. Wish I went years ago. I had heard it gets crowded but I got tons of waves and no hassel
  16. Not too high, just would have been a long climb around some limbs to get a better anchor. Waves are in Morocco.
  17. No, but I've tried to hammer a nail into purple heart and I failed. I know nothing about milling but these timbers are unbelievably tough.
  18. It would be criminal to fell that. That would be a great habitat stump. Any sign of bats?
  19. Looks like a good job to get your teeth stuck into Stu. Its a real shame some of it couldn't have been retained. Highways have been pretty keen with there pink crosses just lately.
  20. 12 years on the tools too, top climber in the company and I'll bet he doesn't get more than your asking
  21. Faster than who? I know guys who I consider to be top of their game, one even has a BSc Arb to boot and they are still worried about their jobs. There just isn't the kind of money you are expecting in the job at the moment. If cash is you motivation get down tesco, if you like tree work then perhaps you need go get off you pedistool.
  22. I just worked 13 hours straight with no break and earnt nothing. I'd laugh at someone who wanted £130 a day on the books to run a site at the moment. Get ready for the real recession, things are going to get a lot worse.
  23. I can beat that. Last week was quiet so we built a fence in my front garden to keep the kids in. I took the spoil from the post holes along with some old myplex and turf to the tip. I had the same arguement, I told him to get his boss, which he refused to do but let me tip. The tip rat said " you can't tip the soil on the soil pile though, you need to shovel it into the skip" Ok I said, would you mind seeing me back? He then called me back until I reversed into the skip then said "ha, ha, thats why god gave you mirrors so you can see where your going" I politely told him to go away as I was getting cross. He then followed me round the tip as I sorted my waste. I've got rear barn doors on the landy which I bungee back. On the last bay he was supervising me unload and I reminded him that he had made me cross since I'd been there and he might like to find something else to do. His response was to ignore me and pick up some plastic from the floor beside my truck. As I closed the barn doors he sprung back into life just in time to connect with my closing barn door (this was honestly an accident as he stood up just at the right moment). As he screamed and bled I told him "ha, ha thats why god gave you a head, so I could bash a hole in it with my truck" Then he started screaming that he'd been assaulted so I decided to leave. I don't think I'll be going back up there in my work vehicles for a while.
