  9. Any body having an accident with a chainsaw, and/ or up a tree, is classed as a professional, reguardles of wether they are or not. So all the D.I.Yers and lop and top merchants are 'professional'. I would like to see the breakdown of some of these figures, and how many of these accident are by true professional. May be we should keep an log of accident by Arb talk menbers, so that we have some figures that we can compare with the H.S.E. This might provide a more realistic figure of what is actually happening
  10. Customer rang me up tuesday evening, having just freed two people that were trapped in their caravan. Part of the tree landed on the caravan whilst they were watching telly. Amazingly there was only one small crumpled bit and a broken skylight. The wood that is stacked in picture four is what fell on the caravan. What was left of the tree was not in good condition. Half way up there was gaping pressure crack that was opening and closing with the wind. Thank heavens for ratchet straps. And various blown and broken branches. This is the scareyest tree that i have had to climb for a while, and the gusts of wind were a great help.
  11. I conceed, you win. Yours is bigger than mine
  12. Given the vast array of bad practices that go on in modern forestry because thay have always be done like that, your system works well for you and will in all probablility keep safe. However it is the unexpected that causes problem. These problems are generally unforeseable, and will therefore not be on your risk assessment. If it works for you and you can justify it tell them to get off site as they are compromising your safety ! Rant rant rant
  13. At a guess Lampter Tree services, they seem to be getting all the council road work
  14. I will conceed that that is a big hedge, however is it as wide ?
  15. The hedge is in sunny west wales
  16. Finally got my phone to talk to the computer. Here is part of a hedge that we trimmed and reduced. The photo show about a third of one of the two hedges. Nearly two weeks of work to complete. Anybody got a longer one, fnarr fnarr ??

  18. How much commission are you getting ?
  19. I don't believe they wanted to do that !!
  20. Who's the unlucky sod being used for target practice !! A nice bright orange helmet makes a good target.
  21. Is there any difference between CS50 and 34, 35 ? It appears to be the same procedures. Any way how do you define a damaged tree. There are not many trees around that do not have some sort of damage, and thet will out last us all. rant rant rant !
  22. Simular to the T hinge that i use on old rotten trees. You leave a strip of wood (2-3" wide) at 90 degrees to the hinge uncut. in the middle of the tree, it helps support the tree particularly when they are leaning. I do have a photo but i can not get my phone to download onto the computer. Clear as mud !!!!
  23. You want to cut the trees om rotation, so that you will always have timber to cut. 10 year rotation fell one tree in ten, 15 year rotation one tree in 15 etc. However extraction is more difficult, and care needs to be taken that the remaining trees are not damaged, but the canopy remains closed therefore there should little or no windthrow. To get around this fell coops or blocks. again split into areas to maintain the rotation, this also makes it easier to fell the trees are you have a large space to fell into. Down sides is that the edge trees are prown to wind throw, and if there are large numbers of deer in your area there will be no regrowth. However you can use the brash to create a dead hedge around the outside of the coupe (needs to be over 6' high). Getting the timber out will be your main problem. Dumper truck is probabley the cheapest method, but a tractor will be of more use. Get stuck in and enjoy, no matter you do to the wood it will recover !! And if you have not used a chainsaw much get some training it will save you time, money and limbs in the long run Happy chopping
  24. We cleared six acres of gorse with brush cutters that had the spinney blades of death on the end. With practice you can fell an arc in one swipe, which is about what you can carry under your arm. One person with the strimmer, and two people to clear as you go. Keeps the ground clear under foot, and causes minimum ground disturbance. Don't have one big fire, but spread the fire sites across the work area. And watch out nothing burns hotter than gorse !!!
  25. yes but it will drive you screwey. You need a bit of variety to keep the grey matter tick over !
