  1. why does nobody blind whip, i e whip on the inside, damn sight neater, and everyone says, "oi you aint whipped it", oh yes i have, show them the two knots in the fork of the eye, then they go "oh cool"
  2. Couple of hours in the rain, amazing what you can make
  3. Its called the fatalistic gene, it kicks in once you have parental responsibilities, or other major responsibilities, such as becoming a parent, large mortgage etc. For some reason it affects the way you double check every time you connect a karabiner, when you tie a rope etc. Does my head in. its why when it comes to the large dangerous dismantle you think hmmmm, i can make more on the ground managing than being up that tree, and i get to go home at the end of the day. I seem to always get it once i am on a standing pole high up, seems to be the loneliest place in the world
  4. hello self employed, fully qualified will travel, ND Arb & forestry, QTRA qualifiedbased on the end of the humber bridge, geography no issue as long as i have advanced notice cheers r
  5. how far are you lot prepared to travel, i know a lady who works with a first aid training company, from basics to first aid in remote places, i used them for my Mountain Leader training, they are superb, and not that expensive, they are based around york. Fran Woodcock is the ladies name, company is underwood training http://www.underwood-training.co.uk
  6. Does anyone have any documentation or a link to anything which has minimum distances trees should be from houses, i know nhbc, have stuff, but does not take into consideration soil types, mainly shrinkable clays etc. Sounds kind of silly, but there is nothing in 'tree roots and the environment' not a lot in management of arboriculture etc. I have the water demand tables etc,
  7. I love this kind of thread, experience versus qualifications, you get the qualifications youll get the experience after, it puts you in a much stronger position than anyone who can just drive a chainsaw, as for just knowing latin names etc, hmm says it all, put it this way, stick the course out, then the day when it is too wet to work up a tree, you can stay in the dry and write tree reports and mortgage surveys for £55 per hour. The difference between someone who knows the physiology of a tree, which enables you to understand how to prune a tree and when and how it will respond puts you in a much stronger position, you also come across to customers with more confidence and knowledge. Knowledge is an exceptionally strong instrument in amongst the arboricultural tool box
  8. Anyone know where i can do the course near to York area really, to be able to the loler checks, also anyone know how, if yourself is a loler tester/inspector, what happens with your own kit. Oh any idea of pricing
  9. Have finally cracked the art of splicing, have now got just about everything spliced. Climbing line, waist lanyard etc. Washing line, knife string, cord for a silky saw etc. Has anyone tried splicing 16mm Double Esterlon. Have load tested them on trucks etc. Which aint to destruction etc. Nothing snapped failed, or dislodged. I am not looking for the answers about how it aint upto manufacturers standards and not doing relevant courses etc. Spent money and time on the kit, and am getting great results. In the industry we tie our own knots in various configurations, and put our lives on them or someone elses. I use krabs for rigging for both small and big procedures, currently use either a double fisherman, or a double figure 8 or a triple fisherman. Splicing would tidy the whole knotty end out.
  10. Tried various options, VT, XT, distel, knut and the michocoan. Love the VT but it takes time to get a good combo, running on imori, with 8mm spliced eye amor prus. Really good combo.
  11. Anyone know if they are available, if so in decent condition, need one but cannot justify £4000, i want a device which creates a paper trail, logs the output.
  12. got all my kit friday, fid kit, 5 different sizes, upto 16mm, you'll need sailmakers needles for whipping or blind stitching, samson have some good stuff, all up it cost me £50, english braids have a really good guide, get yourselves to a decent boat chandler, just constructed my first retrievable cambium saver, splicing does not work well on rope which has been bounced on or loaded, the fibres, or braids get stretched, this makes it tough when on the rethread. Got shown how to blind stitch in between the braids.
  13. Before I splash £170, are they as good as all the bumf i keep finding, i am seriously tempted to pop for one and just trial it. I am only interested in responses from people who have bought one or used one properly, not satirical mutterings
  14. i have just elevated myself to design guru
  15. The boys at a certain arb supplier in Farncombe, tell the whole thing is £29, think i shall be making a purchase, think i might crank for a spider jack as well.
  16. Question for any of the suppliers who might be about, can anyone get hold of the new vectran cord and thimble seperately, normally found on a teufelberger ce lanyard, but i already have a lovely lanyard. I have attached a piccie
  17. To everyone who has emailed, and replied. Many thanks for your interest and sending details, i now have who i need, this job is ongoing, once a year until we all drop dead. When it comes around this time next year i will put details back up. Once again many thanks, those who did not get a phone call, or email, it is not a reflection of skillset, age, location or good looks. People already getting nervous, i am sure we have all heard about the film broke back mountain. Thanks again
  18. I have woodland work commencing 4th april, just a weeks work, it does not get any better, felling and snedding pioneering spieces, there is some big stuff to drop, nothing massively technical. We are camping in the woods, i am looking for someone who has tickets to crosscut, fell, and possibly climb, but that will be more recreational. All usual camping facilities available, showers, stoves, pub etc. I am looking for someone local to the area, nearest location for the time being is woolley services on the m1. If anyone has an interest please let me know, at this point i am open to lots of options. I ask for a CV and what you would charge for a week away in the woods. Monday to friday lunchtime. Get yourself there and back.
  19. Afraid no photos, has anyone come across a condition in beech trees, from young to old, pruned and unpruned. Branches have longitudinal splits along the topside of the branches, callous wood forms but seems to peel back, so when viewed from below, it appears the bark has been peeled back along its length. May only be a narrow split, in others may be more open. It has me scratching for inspiration. Looked at two trees yesterday, condemned as diseased to be removed but dunno what it is. Strouts & Winter not helping, neither body language of trees, or Watson or Harris.
  20. yeah been using it for a few weeks now, has a little more forgiveness than the leap of faith vt. but vt is very dependant on climbing rope, prussik cord type, diameter and length. Love the michoacan, equally the knut is a good one, used that ages ago. Nice knot
  21. most of, nearly all can be found on treebuzz.com, or on sherrill tree website, i am sure they are plastered all over the net else where. I have found everyone has personal preference on prussik length etc.
  22. same as the isc pulleys, good for tendering, think it may have to be in combination with something else to make a vt work. the stein pulley works well, seen it in practice, not used one in anger,
  23. The split in the bark looks ominus, however once the picture is shown showing the surrrounding conditions i cant but query whether the tree became victim of construction interference. Does anyone know which came first tree or house, i suspect tree. From provided info, the canopy has shape, and if recent then not obvious signs of crown/canopy dieback, but if construction work has taken place, sometimes the signs/symptons can take 5-10 years to show themselves. Then usually not a lot can be done, due to root interference and damage. Once we have root damage, then the tree becomes suspectible to pathogenic attack through the roots.
  24. I like the imori, 12mm but feel and spongyness of 13, colour not really an problem, as long as it matches my mascara on the day. depends on your climbing syle, size of handy wandy and the specific climbing system ie not configuration along with prussik size and construction, along with the bounce effect. You got a new business name, or covering both sides of the river
  25. Got a jensen a530, 800 hours, never had a problem, until every so often when you go to start it, once the coil heater lamp has gone out, if you dont catch it and have to turn the key again, it seems to have a lock out, ie it just wont start, give it 5mins and it will then start. any ideas,
