  1. Hi guys and girls, The front breaks on my RB44 have locked (no laughs about breaks please, these have locked on, most claims relating to breaks on the RB are to do with them being insufficiant, these are certainly locked)! After an hour's drive, two hour's work and an hour back we unhitched the chipperand set off to job no. 2 for the day, it was instantly apparant that the breaks were partially on, within 50 meters we stopped to check things out and realised what was going on. The vacume dial usually sits at around 50% all the time, right now, at idle, the vacume continues to rise to 100%,. We managedf to limp the truck off the drive by continuous tapping of the now rigid break pedal (which gave enough to let us move in first gear). I assume it's a problem with the vacume since there is no fluid loss, but as this is a reletively new vehicle to me and my first with vacume assisted breaks, I jave no idear what to do! Suggestions greatfully recieved... tristan.
  2. Bob, I'd be interested to know if you have time. I don't know if I'll keep it if not, we cover such a big area in hilly Wales that whilst it's awsome in some ways, the hills are a problem!
  3. A nice conversion, I got an RB44 about a year ago to use here and there, it's got a decent tipper body and looks great. My only gripe with them is how incredibly slowly it goes up a hill, even unladen. It seems to me there'sa problem with the difference between 2nd gear and 3rd gear; as the revs drop in 3rd and you need to cvhange down the difference to 2nd is such that you're going at 15-20 mph tops. Just thought I'd put it out there incase I've a problem and others don't?? In which case, I have a problem!
  4. There's no indication of root rot, and no trees have been removed. It's in a reasonably exposed location and we endured 100 mph winds during the 14 feb storms. The winds were realy ferocious, the same day we had our LUX traffic lights blow away (which signalled the right time to call it a day!) and the local university had over 200 trees down!
  5. Can they be installed on trees which are already established though? Do they not need to be wrapped around the rootball when planting?
  6. I have a client who has expressed concern after seeing the root plate of his Silver Birch tree moving in high winds. If at all possible he does not want the tree to be taken down or fall down. I have suggested a crown thin/clean and tip reduction to reduce sail effect and weight which he is happy to go with, but he has expressed an interest in using some form of ground anchor to attempt to stabalise the root plate too. This is a new concept to me but I can see some logic in it provided we can find a system which gets the ground anchors well below the moving plate. Additional points: The plate is not visibly moving other than in exceptionally high winds, the tree is approx. 30' tall, there is no threat to persons or property should the tree fail, the client is aware that any anchor system would be somewhat experimental! All opinions and advice is welcome. T.
  7. Climber/groundsman (or women) needed, we work within 1.5 hours of SY23. We do a mix of domestic arb work, council tree contracts and bt line clearance. We also do footpath and bridge building but that won't be your concern (unless you wanted it to be) Must have at least CS30,31, 38,39, a full driving licence and experience. NRSWA signing and lighting, CS40,41, certArb, an advantage. Drop me an email me if you're interested.
  8. Hi 18stoner, What's the title of that document? I can't get the link to open, maybe it's out of date. Tristan.
  9. Or does anyone know any smaller hire companies that may have one, I've tried everything I can find on google, seems tio be a shortage of chippers around leicester...
  10. Hi Guys, I'm going to be doing some tree work for my Dad nr leicester this Saturday and don't want to have to tow my chipper from Aberystwyth! Does anyone want to hire their's to us for the day? Tracked would be ideal or we could do a bit of dragging if someone's got a tow-along. Could manage with 4" but prefer 6" really. Tristan Merry-Howe Arbcore:thumbup:
  11. Thank you for all your feedback, it's all being taken on-board.
  12. The basic principle of this idea is that a company will come to us because we have a reputation for supplying good quality, capable, work-fit, experienced staff. A set of certificates alone will not be enough, referencing and work history is vital. This is new, if you want to give any input I'm happy to accept it.
  13. I should probably mention how I came to think that this is a good idea: I run a fairly small Arb company in West Wales (and have done for 10 years), one of the problems that I come accross on an irregular basis is having the right number of workers. It's the nature of any business that there are busy times and slow times and obviously there are ways to deal with that and we all continue with the appropriate number of staff for our businesses. But then along comes three large jobs that all need to be done at the same time and you just need one or two extra staff that you can count on to be good; and that's where I aim for Arb-tempUK to fit in.
  14. There will be no fee to sign up. I'm not competeing with ArbJobs, the'r model is very different. What we are aiming to offer is a resource that companies can go to when they need an extra staff member for a short period of time. We will have a register of professionals, who's certification, work history etc have been fully checked, on our system and be able to supply the company with a suitable person quickly. The company seeking the staff will pay the fees. Hope that makes things clearer. Tristan.
  15. Hi guys, We're in the process of starting a recruitment and temping agency for the Arb industry. If you're a freelance climber, groundsman, consultant or have any other link to the industry and would like to be on our register please email us: [email protected] Please include all NPTC units and any other qualifications you have along with any other information you'd like us to have. We also need to know whereabouts you are happy to work and what type of driving licence you hold. Tristan.
  16. I'm looking for a climber/groundsman to do two days a week (maybe more some weeks), we're based near Machynlleth. [email protected]
  17. Anyone heard of Phytophthora ramorum in Monkey Puzzle? It is possible? I have a client with a MP that's loosing its needles in a big way, probably 20% have fallen since Autumn. Tree is 50' +, no change to drainage recently, has had lower branches removed over the years so now has approx 25 swirls of branches on it, of which 8-10 have lost their needles. Any advice welcomed.
  18. Thanks for the replies, particularly the idea of going with a clean sprayer and spraying around some trees; that really is something I ought to have though of myself!!!! Thanks, Tristan.
  19. We've been approached by the woodland trust to give a price for spraying around some 1-3 yr old trees, having never done a spraying contract I find myself in the possition I used to be in 10 years ago when we started of not knowing how much to charge; feels strange now! Will anyone advise me what they think is a good / fair / competative / profitable price per 100 trees? The sites are all within reasonable travelliung distance. Any advice much appreciated! (I should mention we do have staff who hold the necessary certificates.)
  20. Blue rope coming out of the tree was tied to... wait for it.... a piece of thorn hedge! Why? Your guess is as good as mine. Maybe a sort of DIY sky line~! T
  21. I almost drove through the hedge when I saw this, I think the pictures say it all!
  22. Thanks for the all the advice, the example log was just that, an example. I got an alaskan mill last year but it started to killed off my big husky. Going to have to get a really big one to cope with running the mill frequently. I'd like to move towards never cutting into logs, does it pay off though?
